This property is immensely special to us, and we are for the first time offering it as a rental.
Our abode sits perched atop 1,000-foot cliffs leading to the historic Waipio Valley, or “Valley Of the Kings,” where many of the ancient Hawaiian ali'i (kings) once resided. This is a very sacred place steeped in Hawaiian history. The stunningly beautiful Waipio Valley is verdant and lush, teeming with waterfalls, fishponds, hiking trails and rivers that lead to a pristine mile-long black sand beach.
The main house is centered on one acre of beautifully landscaped undulating clifftop land. The interior is fully furnished with modern dressings, claiming 3,400 square feet of interior space, with large glass doors opening up onto 1,400 square feet of warm, spacious outdoor living area (wonderful for yoga, sunning, relaxing, or entertaining).
The home was renovated in 2010, with updated appliances and cabinetry, new washer/drier, granite countertops, and thoughtful lighting throughout.
Its modern open floor plan brings the ocean and the tropics to you with its spectacular views, whether you're in the kitchen, dining area, living room or bedrooms. We have designed for the ultimate indoor-outdoor living experience with large glass doors opening onto a warm spacious hardwood deck and yard, offering views of the pacific ocean, the coastline cliffs of Waipio Valley, and our neighboring Island of Maui. Sleeping quarters include three (3) spacious high-ceiling bedrooms and two-and-half (2.5) airy bathrooms.
In addition to the two tastefully appointed queen-size guest suites downstairs (each with walk-in closet, and french doors opening onto the private guest lanai), the second-floor master suite features a king-size bed, lounge area, and workspace/desk area which overlooks the yard and ocean. The master bath houses a jacuzzi tub (also overlooking the ocean, yard, and cliffsides), his and her vanities, and a walk-in shower.
The kitchen is a chef's dream. It is spacious and open, with infinity views through the house to the ocean, ideal for entertaining and cooking at the same time, with cozy bar seating. There is ample granite counter space to prep meals with friends and family. With a beautiful gas range and oven, dishwasher, appliances, and kitchenware, you will be fully prepared to cook any meal.
The expansive 1,400 square feet of outdoor living area includes a 6-person hot tub, outdoor lanai with heated shower, outdoor lounges and tables, and propane grill (BBQ). The back yard bestows 180-degree ocean views, offering frequent humpback whale sightings in the winter and breathtaking rainbows during any season.
The remainder of the property is carefully landscaped with numerous native flora, and a variety of fruit trees (starfruit, tangelo, papaya, banana, lemon, lime). The long driveway leading down to the front of the house offers seclusion, insulation, and privacy. There is no central air conditioning or heating, as the climate here is never too hot nor too cold. At night, the sounds of the tropics will lull you to sleep.
The closest small town, Honoka'a (small fresh food grocer, movie theatre, emergency room, individually-owned restaurants and shops, etc) is 9 miles up the road, and the larger town of Waimea (small airport, hardware store, larger grocer and hospital) is a 30-minute drive. The larger towns of Hilo and Kona, each with international airports, are both approximately one hour away.
You will need to rent a car while visiting the Big Island. If you wish to access the road down to Waipio Valley, it is restricted to 4-wheel drive vehicles only. If you are physically fit and like to hike and walk, the journey by foot is a great option.
Please note, 30-day minimum stays are the current aim, but case-by-case exceptions may be made for stays of 10 days or more based on availability.
Included in rent will be water, electricity, cable, DSL/wireless internet, landline, and lawn maintenance. There is also a Verizon repeater to amplify the mobile signal.
First and last month's rent, $250 cleaning fee, and security deposit will be due at lease signing.
I am an intrepid traveler who enjoys broadening my horizons via exploration of lands both foreign and domestic...cultural immersion being the holy grail :)
My husband and I stayed 9 nights at this beautiful house. It had everything we could want or need. The house was very comfortable and well furnished. Located next to Waipio Valley, it was far enough away from the busy tourist spots but still a great place to start day trips to any part of the island. The view was spectacular and on a clear day we were able to see Maui. I highly recommend this home to anyone who is interested in a place to vacation away from the traffic and noise and hectic pace of the busy tourist areas. Everything about it was superb and dealing with the owners was so easy.
We were very fortunate to be guests in this gorgeous home for a few weeks in late February. Everything from the expansive grounds, to the comfy furnishings, to the layout of the home itself (it feels like one great continuous space) made us feel warm and welcome. Talk about a relaxing getaway...we didn't have to see a soul if we didn't want to. Lots of peaceful reading and lounging around the house, a few cold beverages in the hot tub, and an abundance of outdoor activities just in the valley below. I personally could spend days just meandering around Waipio beach and valley. Never mind the endless activities just a short drive away.
One reminder for future visitors - you definitely need a 4-wheel drive (we had a Jeep) to drive to/from the valley. (It is also walkable...we did it on two separate mornings...but not easy). It is, of course, absolutely worth the effort whether you walk OR drive. You won't find anything like Waipio beach anywhere....on any island. It truly is magical. And to boot, very few visitors!
Thanks to Michele and Erik for being so easy to get in touch with, and so enthusiastic about our stay in their home. You gave us such a special experience. We will definitely be back!
Trips into the Waipio Valley (by car it's 4WD only, if you hike it's a steep walk back up!), will be one of the most beautiful experiences of your trip to HI. Secluded, untainted, and majestic are only the first words that come to mind. For the more adventurous and athletic, a one-day hike into Waimanu Valley (and subsequent camping) will unfurl sight that very few people will witness for themselves. See for yourself.
The Hamakua Coast, by itself, is astounding. The land, ocean, and people that surround it only add to its majestic qualities.
