About Brad + Brenda McCall

We grew up together in northern Virginia and always enjoyed the Appalachian Mountains. We often sidetracked down the Skyline Drive while attending Virginia Tech. We moved to Weatherford, Texas in 1986 and have been here since, raising our four wonderful children. We've been married for 37+ years, kids are grown, self sufficient, and producing lovely grandchildren. It was time for us to acquire our dream vacation home to generate mountain memories as we had in Virginia.

Brad + Brenda McCall purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Brad + Brenda McCall chose Southwest

The Coveted Upper Blanco Basin! When you turn off of highway 84 east onto state road 326 it quickly becomes apparent why this location is special. The abundant wildlife is easily seen in this picturesque valley split by the gurgling waters of the Rio Blanco and surrounded by stunning views of the Continental Divide. The peace, quiet, and tranquility of the area seeps into your soul within the first mile. You won't hear anything more intrusive than the rustle of the aspen leaves, bellowing of a bull elk, chattering of the squirrels or melodies of the the abundant song birds.

What makes this cabin unique

Wonderful views of the Continental Divide from the kitchen and front living area. The cabin is a RETREAT. Nestled in a quiet beautiful area inhabited by wildlife and friendly, caring neighbors.

Excellently maintained and upgraded home. Relax in comfort AND style!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a wonderful time and enjoyed everything about our vacation...We're still talking about it. We're definitely looking forward to returning! 😃

We filled our days with hiking, horseback riding, riding our son's new 4 wheeler, shopping, fishing, and relaxing! We loved showing our children the dark night sky lit up with bright stars that you don't get to see in the city.

We absolutely love seeing all of the wildlife... tons of mule deer, (which my husband appreciated seeing as an avid hunter) birds, chipmunks, Elk, and I even had a gorgeous hummingbird fly right in front of my glass of wine on the deck and captured the shot in my picture!

We laughed a lot in the game room with a few competitive games of air hockey! My husband and youngest daughter worked quite a bit together on the Lab puzzle.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful cabin with our family. It was just perfect!! Also, many Thanks for your helpful tips and ideas to enjoy.

Thank you,

Great home!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay during spring break was fantastic. With 5 kids, there was plenty of room and things for the kids to do after a day on the slopes. The home had everything we needed for a great stay in Pagosa Springs. Wolf Creek skiing is an easy drive and we'd recommend visiting during ski season and/or for a summer getaway. The McCalls were great and easy to work with in planning our vacation.

Lazy Bear Retreat is Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in Pagosa - everything about our trip was excellent! This was our second time to go to this particular cabin, and I can honestly say we are done looking for any other lodging in Southern Colorado!

The owners are very friendly and accommodating. The pre-trip information/directions were easy to follow and spot on. There were no surprises when we arrived to Lazy Bear. Everything was exactly how it was presented to us online. The location of the cabin was perfect. We felt like we were off the grid enough, but still among the living! We did a 2 mile hike and a 15 mile hike, and both trailheads were within a 20 minute drive from the cabin. We went on walks among the pines and aspens, and we took in beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The cabin itself is spacious and clean. It's a balance renting a place and either feeling like a) you're intruding on someone's home, or b) you're staying in a cold environment that's not homey at all...Lazy Bear Retreat has found the perfect balance. It was warm and inviting.

From the kids to the adults we had great time here. We recommend this place to anyone who loves the mountains, is looking for an awesome cabin, and is ready for a true retreat. Our only complaint is we had to leave!

Holiday Magic in the San Juan Mountains

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in the middle of a heavy snow storm. Road to cabin is winding, heavily wooded, and was heavy with snow. Surroundings were a winter fantasy! Advice: Drive slowly and make sure you definitely have a 4wd vehicle, AND snow chains handy. Driveway is steep, and deep with snow. Handyman is very charming, and a dear, who came out several times during our stay to plow the driveway. Check the weather before you leave in the winter monthes, so you can be prepared.

Had 3 teen boys with us. The yard is backed right up into the forest. Sledding right out of the yard ! Hiking around the yard and surrounding areas was awesome! Property is ample room to explore, especially when snow is so deep. Road below also great to hike down. TONS of snow to play in, everywhere. Bottom floor game room was perfect! Direct tv, air hockey, you name it. Pulled out the regulation size ping pong table in one side of the garage, and that added to the fun! Garage was toasty warm! Sleds and everything you can possibly need or want, right there. All in great condition! Use the long red one, its my favorite!

Home interior is very warmly, decorated. Paint tones, whimisical, intresting decor, very homey. well done. Clean and inviting. Towering windows let in the beautiful sunshine, and a view that was out of this world, for every window in the house. Even the bathrooms!

Beds are all super comfy, bedrooms warm and inviting. Plenty of fluffy towels, comforters and blankets. Bedrooms are very large. Huge closets for storage, and extras you may need. Take your time and look at each piece of decor that was lovingly placed. Very charming! Kitchen is very well stocked with lovely dinnerware, glasses and seemed new pots and pans. Not one thing I could think of that was not there. Open concept is perfect! Large dining table. I have to say one of my favorite things was the view from the window over the sink! Looking out each time, into the forest covered with snow, was soothing and very special! Direct tv, on each floor. Tip: if its snowing and heavy snow, if the signal is down, its because theres snow on the receiver outside. Dust off the snow, and it worked perfectly! Two decks were great, although covered in snow. Put birdseed along the rail and the steller jays, came in droves! Wood stove works great. Home is a warm, toasty winter haven. Stars on clear nights from the deck, are so clear and bright, its as if you can touch them. Magical.

Owners are great. Will book again!

Wonderful experience.

  • 5 of 5

The property was breath taking and extremely comfortable. We enjoyed every minute. The property was way more than we were expecting and the owners were fabulous. We made many wonderful family memories and will definaty return to this property!!! The property is remote enough for relaxation and enjoying the great outdoors but close enough to enjoy Pagosa Springs and what the city has to offer as well as snow skiing. A TOTAL package which we were looking for!!! I highly recommend this property.

Great House!

  • 5 of 5

House was in fantastic condition and very well furnished. Kitchen was very well equipped with anything you could possible need to cook. Very secluded, backs right up to the San Juan Forrest and is surrounded by tons of wildlife. Great place for hiking, hunting or just getting away. I would definitely stay here again.

We wish we were still there!

  • 5 of 5

This property is a real gem. The location, being a bit remote was just what we were looking for. The cabin was beautiful with everything one could want for a relaxing stay in the mountains. It was very clean, extremely comfortable and the views from the spacious deck on the main level along with the deck off the master bedroom on the second level were stunning. The road leading to the property is well maintained and not the least bit busy allowing for some beautiful walks. Pagosa Springs is about a 45 minute drive from the property, so any provisions one might need can be obtained there. We were so satisfied with the cabin and its' location, we had no desire to drive to town. We were told that while we were there, the area was experiencing a heat wave. The cabin has no air conditioning but really it was not a problem for us. Opening the many windows, drawing the shades on the sunny side of the cabin during the day, combined with the altitude made for pleasant temperatures in the cabin. The owners were very gracious and accomodating and we hope to return to " Bear Run Cabin " next summer. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone looking for a beautiful retreat in the mountains. Indeed, we wish we were still there.
