About the property

Rustic, yet Modern. 2 bedrooms, 1 Bathroom. Located on the Oregon Trail.

Juanita's Chalet is located in the forested mountain town of Rhododendron, Oregon. It was built by The Lake Family as a roadside market for Oregon's Centennial Celebration in 1959, part of which honored the Oregon Trail.

It's possibly most well known by long time locals as "Juanita's Mexico" restaurant. Juanita and a few others housed their Restaurants here from 1961-1988.

After you brush the fir needles or snow off your boots, come on in and see what we mean by "Modern Rustic Vibe". Tall ceilings, cool gray walls and dark wood toned floors make this a very hip Chalet. The vintage sled hanging in the Living Room lets you know this is a fun place to be. The wide open floor plan make this an inviting place to spend time, whether it be with Friends, Family, or just two Sweethearts.

After a day of Mountain Adventures, relax in the living area on the rustic log furniture. Grab a mug of hot cocoa and read a book, or watch a movie. The Chalet is outfitted with High Speed Internet, Television, DVD Player, DVD's, and Cable Channels.

When mealtime rolls around, you'll find a tidy and functional kitchen. Knotty pine cabinets, solid granite countertops and all the appliances and kitchen tools you'll need make this kitchen a Dream to cook in. In the Morning, brew some of the local Mt. Hood Roasters Coffee. It's so good, we try our best to keep the jar stocked with their fresh ground coffee. In the Evening, look in the Hutch and you'll find a blender and a variety of specialty drink glasses to mix up your favorite cocktail.

The Dining Area has a sturdy old wood table with seating for 6. It's the perfect place for dining and card games alike, with plenty of room for everyone.

When the day turns to night, you'll find two cozy bedrooms. One of them has a Pillowtop Queen Bed with a handmade pallet style headboard. A heavy comforter and soft sheets will keep you warm all night long. The other bedroom has a sturdy twin size bunk bed with comfy bedding. Both bedrooms have closets with plenty of storage.

The other sleeping accommodations are a Full size futon which can sleep two, located in the Living Area. There's also a small futon (5'x5' mattress) that can sleep 1 or 2 small people. Bedding is provided for both.

The Bathroom has a full size bath tub with shower and has been recently updated and painted a relaxing shade of gray. In the bathroom you'll also find the laundry area which has a washer and dryer for your use.

The Chalet has a large sunny side and back yard. The picnic table is perfect for an outdoor dining, reading a book, or checking your email. There's also a big old fashioned rock Firepit. Many evenings have been spent sitting around the fire with good conversation among friends. Firewood can be purchased in the Summer at the local market just down the road, please check local fire restrictions first.

An interesting bit of history to ponder while you sit under the trees, is that the Oregon Trail went right through this piece of land. Across the Highway is the Tollgate Campground and the Tollgate Interpretive Area which has access to the Zigzag River and a Replica of the Tollgate on the Oregon Trail.

*JUANITA'S CHALET FRONTS HIGHWAY 26. While this provides easy access in Winter weather conditions, keep this is mind if you have small children, pets, or are sensitive to road noise.*

About Owner/ Property Manager

We're the Rysavy Family, born and raised Oregonians. Mike grew up in Milwaukie, Tamarah grew up in Cottage Grove. In 2001 we met while soaking at Bagby Hot Springs. In 2002 Mike proposed at the top of the Bull of the Woods Lookout Tower in Mt. Hood National Forest. In 2003 we were married in Mazatlan Mexico. In 2007 and 2011 our beautiful Daughters were born. We lived in Rhododendron from 2003 until 2013 when we purchased a Hot Spring Resort in Eastern Oregon. Hot Springs are our true passion and we truly love being able to live and work there everyday with our Family. We still love the Mountain though and we visit our little Chalet often.

Owner/ Property Manager purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Owner/ Property Manager chose Mt. Hood, The Gorge

Our married life began in a little cedar shake cabin down off Still Creek Road. A few years later we bought our dream property, which was 10 forested acres with a huge mid century fixer upper just up the road from Juanita's Chalet. At the time, this cabin (and the other 2 little cabins nearby) had seen better days. We drove by them everyday and saw so much potential. When we got the chance to buy them all, we were so excited. We loved the history of them and the land and wanted to be able to let vacationers enjoy them as well!

What makes this cabin unique

Juanita's Chalet sits on a .41 acre forest lot adjacent to the National Forest. Not only does the location provide direct access to Highway 26 with Skibowl only 8 miles away, but there are two(2) other cabins on the property that can be rented if you need extra room for friends & family! The Tin Roof Cabin is behind the other cabins & farther off the highway. It can be rented at:

Cozy Space, Has all necessary amenities

  • 4 of 5

Great little cabin on the edge of Rhododendron. Just a half mile to small grocery store, rec marijuana, and a few little places to eat, Plus the Mt Hood express line to Gov't Camp. Easy to miss the turn in the dark for driveway off of Belle Lake RD but ample space to park. The $65 cleaning fee that doesn't include kitchen or trash removal (since there are no outdoor trash bins due to bears) seemed a little steep...wish I could get payed 32.50/hour to wash linens and dust, but what can u do? TV was super confusing, couldn't get netflix to work. Recommend bringing Roku/Chromecast/Phone mirroring cable etc. There is a gas fireplace under TV that was real comfy, not mentioned in the owner's description. Overall good digs for the $

Fun little cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We visited this cabin for a night in Dec....lots of snow, which was fun! Yes, this is right up against the road, BUT at night the traffic is pretty quiet. Since it had snowed and this property is in a Snow Zone, the semi trucks had chains on which was pretty loud, but there's not much to do about that. Having the heaters on for sound helped. The interior is really nice and very open, which we like. There were a few issues (cable locally was out, DVD player didn't work) and the owner was quick to answer calls/texts. We would definitely rent this again!

Super clean, spacious cabin in perfect condition

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to bike at mt. Hood ski bowl last minute driving from NY to B.C. and made a spontaneous decision while stuck in Portland. No lodging at several places since this is summer the owner replied immediately and was available quickly. I love someone who communicates well! I'd stay here again. Cabin looks tiny on the outside but inside it's huge. 2 other small cabins on the property but I only saw one car briefly. Great lighting inside and beautiful trees surrounding. Location couldn't have been better!.

Very Disappointed!

  • 1 of 5

Well, it was our first VRBO experience and it was very disappointing!

It felt like it was definately built with the bare essentials just as a rental.

It was not a warm cabin belonging to someone renting out as a VRBO.

Not much to speak of and on a loud traffic road.

They asked a lot for cleaning fee and asked us to sweep , take trash out etc too:-(

I would not recomend this particular VRBO!!!

Great little home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 stayed here and had a wonderful time. We loved the open living area with the vaulted ceilings. Our kids thoroughly loved this home. The home is along the highway but the car noise is minimal and we didn't have any trouble sleeping at night. We enjoyed the shared fire pit and the extra amenities of teh wifi and cable. We will definitely be staying here again in the future.

great basic accommodations for the price - practical for up to four people

  • 4 of 5

Overall a good experience. The water is incredibly sweet and tasty. We had a couple of odd problems the night we arrived (toilet tank not filling, heater not coming on) and the owner was very responsive and helpful and they ultimately solved themselves, so no complaints there. The weather had been brutally windy and seemed to have frozen some things that were just then thawing.

Traffic is heaviest when you're going up for good ski weather, so yes - you'll notice it, hopefully! You'll be off doing fun things during the day when it's noisiest. We were there a month, I work from home, I'm kind of a princess about noise, and it didn't bother me. It calms down quite a lot at night, which is when I'm trying to sleep anyway; I'm also an early bird so I'm up before the traffic is; and the heaters run at a level of white noise that evens out the highs and lows to a point where it's not irritating. Also it's much quieter when there's snow on the roads because people slow down, ha!

There was quite a bit of snow, packed slush, and ice for the first two weeks, and we didn’t have any trouble getting out of the drive and onto the highway, never needed chains, and we have wimpy cars. That was a great convenience. The dishwasher is amazingly quiet, I barely noticed it running. I had my family over for dinner one of the nights, there were eight of us in all, and it felt like a good size space to share that way. Plenty of room, but not so much that the kids have enough space to wander away and ignore you. Ha ha ha!

In the minus column, some of the furnishings are tired. If you have kids, this gives you less to worry about so yay! The pots and pans were scary, but every rental house ever has bad cooking pots so we brought our own. Dishwasher soap not provided, be prepared. The biggest problem for us was the lack of trash service which I don't see mentioned here anywhere but is on the instructions posted on the fridge. It's an unusual service to not have at a house. In Portland, it’s against the city code to rent out a place without it, so it didn't occur to me to think about it. Now you know! If we hadn't been there full-time it would have been less of an issue, but we had nowhere to pack things out *to*, it was home. They've had problems with bears, so it makes sense.

I like the Oregon Trail theme and wish there'd been more - I grew up here and never get tired of it. Books, especially. My pop told us about The Chute, up the road. Research and visit!
