Love the outdoors, animals and people. The beauty of Hawaii always astounds me. I want to share my beautiful estate with you, so you can see the beauty of Hawaii. We strive to keep the place immaculately clean and well equipped so that you will have a wonderful vacation.
I come from a large family of 27 people. My family goes on a family reunion every year. I know how difficult it is to find a good place and get everyone to agree (LOL).
Tina Butler Kemper purchased this estate in 2004
This home is at the perfect elevation (not too cold, not too hot). In Kona, temperature is not dependant on season, but on elevation. At sea level it's a constant baking 90-95. Here at the 1500' level it's a comfortable 80-85 during day, and 70-75 at night. King Kamehameha had his Royal Gardens planted up here so he could watch his gardens growing as he fished in Kona Bay. It's lush, green, peaceful, comfortable. Truly paradise.
True 'Old Hawaii' tranquility, temperature and peace. You will feel relaxed and vacationed and never want to leave.
Everything you could want is here! Our family of ten, ages 5 - 81, spent seven days enjoying this property from morning coffee and breakfast on the veranda to dinners at the huge dining room table recounting our adventures that day.
I think all the 5 star ratings pretty much tell the story; be sure to read them all. Regarding the chickens and roosters, they are not the owners. You will find that they roam all over this island, and you never know where they will turn up. Just consider them as part of the ambience.
Besides the property being great, the owner is too. Tina was so sweet with our kids, showing them her "pets" (goats, sheep, cow & dog). She also has umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards, etc. for everyone's use. She lives in a separate house on the property, but does not bother you. However, she was always available to answer questions.
If you are trying to figure out which island to visit, of the three islands I have visited, this was the best. We spent a lot of time trying to decide which property to rent, and feel so fortunate to have selected this one.
Thanks Tina for all you do to make vacations for everyone so pleasurable! Our only complaint was that we could not spend more time there.
My family and friends (group of 15) had a great time! The house was perfect for us. The kitchen is large enough for all of us to gather. We really enjoyed sitting on the lanai and watching the sunsets.
A group of 12 of us stayed here a few weeks ago, and I cannot recommend this place highly enough for families. My dad wanted to do a family trip to celebrate my mother's life who recently passed away. We chose the Big Island and the Kona area because it was my mom's favorite. I now understand why it was her favorite. She would have loved the house and Tina (and George, her dog).
The house is large enough that it can accommodate large family groups perfectly (enough bathrooms, private space and large enough space to gather as a group). I made a mistake in planning when I was in a rush and thought we had reserved the guest cottage when I hadn't (and we didn't really need it because the main house is so large). Tina was super responsive and immediately prepared the cottage for our use, which I still cannot thank her enough.
The house has everything you need for a family gathering and then some. It is rustic enough to feel away from the hustle and bustle, but has all the comforts of home. You really don't even need to leave the house in order to have a great vacation. The house has a fantastic drive, a cow who pals around with goats next door, and a beautiful koi pond at the front. The landscaping is breathtaking. Turkeys, chickens, and geckos visit, which was so cool to us. The kiddie pool and the main pool are large, and all ages enjoyed their time in the pools each day. There is a lot of sitting space on the lanai, and there is plenty of room for the whole group to gather in the kitchen/living room space. We gathered there each morning and evening. We cooked a lot of meals in the kitchen and had everything we needed. There is a view of the ocean that I enjoyed every morning while sipping Kona coffee. That was my form of heaven.
I cannot say enough praise about Tina. She is super easy to work with both before and during. She is present when you need her, but doesn't interfere with your time. She is thorough in providing you with rules that are neither unrealistic nor overbearing. We had a wonderful conversation on our last morning there, and I consider her an honorary member of our family and a friend for life. I highly recommend this place with one caveat: If you are renting, please respect the home and Tina. Treat it better than you would even your own home. It is a gem, and I plan on returning many times in the future to spend time with my mom again in her favorite place. Tina, I hope George is doing okay.
We had a really great stay here. The grounds are beautifully and inspire relaxation. Safe for the kids to run around and play. The feeding of the farm animals added a fun point of interest for them. (The house handbook included what was safe to feed, mainly kitchen scraps.)
The location, with the sweeping views was breathtaking. Our host was super friendly and offered us any help we needed to make our stay comfortable.
I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
We were a family of 12, ages 5-67. This was a wonderful base to start out each day and end each night. We were very happy with the rooms, the location, the views, and of course the owner who was very helpful. There is enough space so if you wanted you could spread out and enjoy some quiet time, but you could also all hang out together..especially on the wonderful lanai. Everything in Kona is close, 20 min to Costco, Safeway, Walmart and of course some nice snorkelling spots. The following isn't complaints, just things you should be aware of; the pools are not heated, but the kiddie pool was warmer so thats where the kids spent most of their time. This may be different in the summer time. The roosters referred to in other reviews are noisy and they start in the middle of the night marking their territory by crowing. Bring ear plugs or just wait a couple nights and you will get used to it,mostly. There are ample kitchen supplies and condiments and the owner has extras that get left behind, like our sriracha sauce. I'd also recommend Google street view the drive from the airport as it is fun and twisty, respect the speed limits. It cools down nicely at night so no a/c is not a problem. We had a wonderful vacation in part because of this wonderful property and owner, and her cute "little" dog. Aloha and mahalo.
We used the beautiful home as our base with two of our children, their spouses and two teens joining us. We had breakfast and dinners together most days and then each family pretty much explored the island the day taking advantage of the variety of things to do that suited their ages. We all loved the macadamia nuts and fresh avacados on the property and appreciated the help from the caretaker on finding the nuts and providing a little flour one evening to cook our dinner. The farm animals were delightful, even the roosters once we got used to them. We loved eating on the lanai and taking in the beautiful views. The home was just as pictured and the beds absolutely comfortable. The pool table got a lot of use, there were great a.m. and afternoon walks and runs. It was a wonderful place to spend peaceful family time together...we have many happy memories. Mohala,
many Kona coffee farms in the area to tour. Beautiful street to take a walk along, with large grassy sides, the other farms are either coffee fields, or animals you can view. Often the coffee is in bloom and looks like snow on the coffee plants. There are wild green parrots that fly over each morning and afternoon, and yellow finches, red jays, and many other birds.
