Gualdo Tadino lies conveniently on the Roman road Via Flaminia, (now the SS3) which runs from Rome to Fano on the Adriatic coast. It provides easy access to most of Umbria's most beautiful towns: Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Spello, as well as those in the neighbouring region of Le Marche such as Jesi, Fabriano, Urbino.
Perugia airport is only a 40 minute drive on the new SS318 (flights from Stansted with Ryanair), but the airports at Ancona and Rome are also easily reached.
Local transport links are very good and the train service from Gualdo Tadino station can take you to Rome in 2 and a half hours, so a day trip to the capital is possible.
From spring through to autumn, just about every Umbrian town holds its own Festa or Sagra. Many of these involve enactments of ancient traditions, many have a food theme, so attending feste is a great way to get to know the local people, to sample wonderful food, and if you enjoy dancing – all the better! Gualdo Tadino holds it's largest festival over the last weekend of September. The Giochi de Le Porte is an event in which the whole town becomes part of an elaborate tableau in medieval costume.
There is a weekly market on Thursday mornings, with stalls selling everything from farmyard fowl to vintage clothing, not forgetting delicious porchetta sandwiches, a typically Umbrian speciality. On the first Saturday of the month, during the warmer months, there is an antique and crafts market along the streets of the historic town centre.
Whether your interests lie in outdoor activities, in history and art, in shopping, or gastronomy, or simply enjoying a relaxing and wonderful environment, Gualdo Tadino has something to please.
