In the vineyard -1 bedroom, shower room, kitchen & sitting room, outside terrace
- english, italian
Maria (English) and Luigi (Italian) take great pride in their stunning farmhouse and their attention to detail when hosting their guests. Luigi is renowned for his pasta classes and is a very talented cook. Maria is fluent in Italian and teaches English to local people as well as being an expert gardener. Together, their knowledge of the local area is invaluable. They'll happily point you towards the best local eateries and can help with sightseeing planning. They are wonderfully discreet and on hand should you need them.
Maria purchased this Cottage in 1995
Why Maria chose Gualdo Tadino
We are located between Assisi & Gubbio and 20 minutes from Perugia in a rather undiscovered part of Umbria. You can enjoy mountain & forest walks, wild flower meadows, cave visits, sightseeing (hilltop villages, historical towns & castles) and eating delicious Umbrian food. All at a fraction of the cost of neighbouring Tuscany! Everyone loves relaxing by our pool either on a sunbed or eating lunch in outdoor sitting room soaking up spectacular mountain views! We are on the main railway link to Rome
What makes this Cottage unique
We fell in love with this part of the world as it is off the usual tourist track but within easy reach of wonderful historical villages and towns. Also for the beautiful mountain views!

Brilliant place to stay
We flew to Perugia and after following Maria's directions we found Domus Nova without any trouble. We were greeted by Maria and Luigi who were the most friendly and helpful hosts. The apartment was clean and well equipped and we loved the outdoor cooking area! The shower was hot and powerful (although we needed it cool due to the very hot weather!).
We used the outside area most due to the fantastic weather. The pool was extremely welcoming and our little boy loved helping to clean it out by guiding the pool vacuum around! We also had our own area outside the apartment with a table and chairs.
For supplies there are two supermarkets within 5/10 minutes away.
During our stay some of the places we visited were Assisi, Gubbio and Spello and would recommend others to do so too. some of the views are breath-taking especially when driving up the mountains around the back of Gualdo.
To help their visitors, Maria and Luigi provide a very handy information booklet with hand drawn maps to help you find your way into and around the towns.
The only downside, which was absolutely nothing to do with our accommodation or hosts were the insect bites we all got! Make sure you take plenty of cream!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and would say it was ideal for families and couples alike. We would love to return one day. Thank you Luigi and Maria.
Thanks again for this glowing report! We really enjoy having children to stay here at Domus Nova! Everyone enjoys the pool. Great at the end of a day sightseeing! Although it really hot when you were here, the Rabbit does stay nice and cool inside. Good for sleeping too! It was so nice to meet you all and hope to see you again in the future. Maria & Luigi xx
Charming situation, good centre, welcoming hosts
We were upgraded to the Owl and found it to be spacious, clean, roomy, comfortable and extremely well-equipped (and having stayed in many s/c properties we know what we are talking about!). The situation was excellent - surrounded by very pretty gardens with a lovely pool/barbecue area and stunning views up to the hills. Our welcome was warm and our hosts helpful and informative in a comfortable, low - key way. Being near Gualdo Tadino which is a 'cross-roads' town in a national sense meant that there were many places to explore within a comfortable distance. Also brilliant walks to do - one must mention the walks at Val Sorda in particular - the stunning wild-flower meadows with many different species of butterflies. Another point to mention - though one should not rate the success of one's holiday on such a mundane thing - the supermarket was within easy distance! We enjoyed visiting Perugia, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino- for the history, art, food and general absorption of atmosphere of the Italian way of life and we would not hesitate to recommend this property to our friends.
A real flavour of Italy
.This was our first visit to rural Italy and what a wonderful experience Umbria and Domus Nova proved to be. We stayed at Domus Nova in the Owl apartment which we found wonderfully spacious and felt like our own home for the days we were there.
Fabulous rolling mountain scenery. A multitude of greens from pasture to oak forests to vinyards to olive groves to alpine like meadows carpeted in spring flowers all punctuated with a scattering of Cypress trees, rocky outcrops, cliffs and magnificent airy views.
Add to this fascinating medieval towns, history that places the romans as relative newcomers and you are starting to get a feel for the place.
Spring was the perfect time for us to visit but I think anytime of year would have bags to offer - walking cycling and winter cross country skiing are all well promoted.
If you get to visit in mid May then the Festa die Ceri in Gubbio is an absolute must - a spine tingling world class experience - get near the action but remember that the elf & saftey goblins don't hold sway in Gubbio - expect football terrace type crowds in the main square but with bags of good humour and enthusiasm.
But there's more - at the end of the day your back at Domus Nova where you can relax on the terrace, have a dip in the pool and toast your good fortune as you take in the perfecrt view of Umbria in miniature and reflect on a day well lived.
Special thanks to Maria and Luigi for their warmth, good humour and expert knowledge freely given - and - nearly as importantly - taking us to a little local pizzeria for the second best pizza I have ever had ( have to be careful here as my wife makes pizza !!).
This is a wonderful place to stay and made especially so by the welcome provided by Maria & Luigi.
Thanks so much for transforming a wonderful trip to Umbria into a most memorable holiday experience.
Everyone finds it relaxing.
Umbria is an absolutely beautiful place to visit, like a more countryfied version of Tuscany.
As soon as I read Maria's description I knew that I wanted to stay in their Casetta. It was lovely, clean and bigger than I thought it would be. Unfortunately the previous tenant had managed to melt the 4 ring cooker knobs but Luigi had provided 2 ring electric plates and had bought the most amazing halogen cooker that could even bake bread. I am sure that the cooker will be reinstated as soon as it can be mended.
The Casetta is more secluded than the other units which suited me. The pool was delightful. It's 4 ft deep which is all that is needed, unless you want to perfect your diving. I loved it because it is possible to swim looking at the mountains which is exhilarating.
Maria and Luigi are brilliant hosts. They have superb taste and boundless enthusiasm for recommending activities, destinations, guide books places to eat and drink, travel details and anything you ask them.
They have the knack knowing whether to leave you in peace or invite you to their families Pizza party. The Pizzas cooked in their home pizza oven where subtle crisp and delicious as they were at Maria's favourite pizza restaurant to which we made a visit for our last evening.
Gualdo Tadiino is an excellent location for exploring Medieval Umbria, Gubbio Perugia and the spectacular hill towns of Spello, Spoletto etc around Perugia.
His home made wine jams and vinegar were delicious and freely provided. The garden is full of aromatic herbs. Luigi even showed us how to make fabulous home made pasta. So delicious that I have to buy my own machine.
I would definitely recommend a visit to any member of my family or friends.
I didn't dislike anything. The local people were extremely friendly and their food, even if you are self catering is fabulous.
I read through their visitors' book which is catalogue of well deserved praise. Everyone finds Domus Nova relaxing and enjoyable.
Great stay at Domus Nova
We had an amazing ten day stay at Domus Nova, upon arrival we were greeted by luigi and Maria. The accomodation was very clean and beautifully decorated with all the charm of an Italian farm house but with the modern touches that we can't live without. The wifi and home made wine and jam were a much appreciated bonus. The view from the windows is so special (the photos do not do it justice)the hillsides and farms over Umbria, not to mention Maria's beautiful garden(she has inspired me) and Luigi's vineyard and swimming pool. There is so much to see and do Maria and Luigi are great if you need advice, walking trails ,nearby village's etc. There is a bus that comes just two minutes up the road and takes you to Gualdo Tadino(a short ride)from there you can catch a bus or train to other places not far away a must see is Spello,Assisi,Gubbio,Perugia is about a two hour bus ride. The local restaurants were fantastic,Umbrian food...yummm.But if you need to stay in and relax by the pool, not a problem as the apartment is fully equipped so you can cook up a storm with all the fresh produce from the nearby market. All in all it is a great location,a stunning Umbrian property,we can't wait to come back (maybe next time in winter).
Thank you so much Luigi and Maria for allowing us to stay in your special house,
Jenny and Lou
Dear Jennifer & Lou
Really nice to hear from you both. Luigi and I are so glad you enjoyed your holiday here with us! Thanks for all the nice compliments which you had already written in our visitors book. We do try to make everyone's holiday here at Domus Nova special. You mention you may come back in the winter. The weather doesn't get really cold until December and although the days are shorter, the weather is bright and pleasant. Good for walks and sightseeing! We have had a lot of really nice people staying this year, both families and couples like yourselves. Our garden looks stunning this year as we had so much winter rain and it has really 'filled out'. It was full of wild orchids in May and June! The family that left this morning had 2 young boys and they were so delighted yesterday as they found a big green praying mantis by the pool! We also had a fantastic pizza making party with all our guest last week. They wrote all about in the visitors book! Hope you are both keeping well and hope to see you again in the near future. Kind regards, Maria & Luigi
