Overview

About the property

Make this your new 'home away from home' for two, while vacationing on Maui.

Welcome to Kihei Garden Estates (KGE) and your new “home away from home”! This is a beautifully maintained property with attractively manicured grounds, and a very quiet resort complex, which will allow for a great vacation and peace of mind and body.

This low-rise development is favored by those who enjoy the ease of moving about the property, from parking, to condo, to pool, to beach. Our home offers a garden view from a spacious lanai. KGE boasts a family-friendly gathering area, seating for up to 25 people for your Bar-B-Q feast under the covered pavilion. Enjoy this full outdoor kitchen with two common gas grills, large swimming pool and over-sized hot-tub/Jacuzzi.

Kihei has the most sought-after resort addresses on Maui because of its location, weather and affordability. This is a place where you can relax in a family-friendly location, with the added convenience of shopping centers, bars and restaurants, and activities, all within walking distance. Kihei boasts many beautiful beaches, shopping, and golf. Times Supermarket is only steps away, for your groceries and necessities.

The condo complex is just a short 2 minute walk to Waiohuli Beach, where you can see the most magnificent sunsets imaginable, and the occasional whale or turtle-sighting. Our beach is great for running, walking, strolling, kayaking, paddle-boarding, watching sunsets, catching some rays, and whatever else you may have in mind.

Our ground-floor home, on the west side of the complex, has been completely renovated with new paint, furniture, décor, hardwood floors, granite counter-tops, and a beautiful travertine walk-in shower. Our one-bedroom, one-bath unit is spotlessly clean and decorated in island-style, painted in neutral colors; and is perfect for your relaxing, restful and comfortable vacation.

Our kitchen is outfitted with all-new Samsung stainless steel appliances in 2015 – a French-door fridge with drawer freezer and ice bucket; convection oven with Ceran five-burner cook-top and digital controls; over-range microwave; a full-size dishwasher and a garbage disposal. Also included is a Nespresso Citiz Espresso Machine and capsules provided for your first seven days (instructions on how to reorder for yourself are provided); a Mr. Coffee coffee-maker with basket filters; a Kitchen Aid mini food-processor; a George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine; a Ninja Ultima Blender; a 4-qt. crockpot, a toaster, and a wine rack, complete with a complimentary bottle of wine. We provide all dishware, cookware, glassware, bakeware, utensils and cutlery. The dual ceiling fans in the kitchen help to keep you cool while you create your tropical feasts and cocktails; and the windows at either ends of the condo will allow the gentle trade winds to cool you after the warm afternoons.

Our bedroom was recently redecorated in January 2017, with a comfortable Cali-King bed, new low-style dresser, night stands and lamps. In early 2018, we plan to replace the existing Jalousie bedroom window. At the same time we'll be installing an air conditioner in the bedroom, making it more comfortable for sleep after your day adventuring on Maui.

We’re up to date on technology, too – our home is equipped with a 42” LED TV; cable television; Blu-Ray DVD; Bose iPod/iPhone Sound-Dock; free, secure WIFI and a wireless laser-printer.

We also include, for your use while vacationing here, a beach bag, beach towels, cooler, backpack-style beach chairs, boogie-board, and beach mats.

Maui Trade Winds

In Maui, the northeast trade winds, averaging 12 mph, occur about 90% of the time in the summer and about 50% of the time in the winter. They keep humidity at a minimum and ensure moderate temperatures, especially on the windward side, unlike other tropical islands closer to the equator.

Maui’s south and west coasts provide almost year-round sunshine, dry weather and fantastic beaches along the resort areas of Makena, Wailea, Kihei, Lahaina, Ka’anapali and Kapalua.

***Please be assured, we practice fair business practices. Under no circumstance would we cancel your reservation to accommodate another longer staying guest. Conversely, if you are considering a longer term stay, please check our on-line calendar for availability – we strongly suggest you book early or we will not be able to accommodate your long-term stay request due to other guests reservations.***

About Chantal McIlveen

Aloha! We're Rick and Chantal. We bought our Kihei home in August 2009, when we decided that we had finally found our “place in the sun” that we’d been searching for. Kihei was the perfect fit, with its small-town feel, yet with all the essential and wanted amenities that it has to offer, and being on the “dry side” of the island guaranteed us more sun than rain. We love how relaxed we immediately become when we step off the plane on Maui. It’s a real joy to be able to share the place we love so much with guests who may return year after year. We look forward to welcoming you.

Chantal McIlveen purchased this condo in 2009

Why Chantal McIlveen chose South Maui

Kihei Garden Estates has the resort feel to it, that we love to spend time at. There are 84 units in this complex, so it's not huge; but it affords plenty of owners and visitors staying here at any given time, so you can make as many, or as few, friends as you like. And there's always someone walking by to bid you a 'good morning' or 'ev'ning'. Many people walk down to the beach each evening, with their drink of choice, to enjoy the 'sunset ritual'.

What makes this condo unique

Our home was definitely a 'work in progress' when we purchased it, and that was to our benefit - we could fix it up as we wanted. We got to work almost immediately, replacing the worn-out carpet with new hardwood floor. From there, we did a little work each time we came back, with the brunt of the bathroom and kitchen renovations being done in early 2015. We now have our beautiful, comfortable home in Kihei.

Quiet, well-equipped, great location!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed 14 nights, and this was our first visit to Maui. This complex is just a block away from a lovely stretch of beach where we relaxed almost every morning (reading and watching the waves) and evening (beautiful sunsets!). This beach is not over-populated and an easy walk to a nicely shaded area.

Record "King-tides" made Maui's (and all the Islands) waters a lot more rough than we are accustomed to (having visited the Big Island for the past 9 years) so we spent a lot of time at the pool. The grounds are very well maintained, and the employees (identified them because they're wearing Kihei Garden Estates shirts) worked tirelessly to keep the pool and the grounds super-clean. The BBQs were always clean and 'ready to go' and we had absolutely no problems at all during our stay.

Everything (restaurants, grocery, beaches) here in Kihei is easy to get to.

Thanks to Chantal who left a bottle of champagne and chocolate for us upon our arrival, as this trip was to celebrate my retirement after 30 years. :-)

Our ONLY comment/suggestion for improvement echoes what others have already said... that the air conditioning unit in the living room does not / simply cannot adequately cool the bedroom when it's warm out. After the third night of our stay, I discovered a large fan in the hall closet (duh!) and it helped cool the overly warm (for us) bedroom greatly.

Chantal was a great communicator, and very gracious to respond almost immediately when I had a question (I somehow overlooked the wireless password info in the book, and emailed her to ask her how to connect... she responded immediately - much appreciated!)

Thanks for the wonderful stay! Hope we can come back soon !!! M&M

We strive to provide the best experience for our guests, and attempt to respond as quickly as possible when you have a question or concern. As mentioned in a previous reply to a guest's comment, we plan to replace the bedroom window early in the new year, and at the same time we'll be installing a room air conditioner for the bedroom, making the bedroom more comfortable for sleep after your day adventuring on Maui.

Very nice and clean property close to the beach

  • 5 of 5

Would highly recommend this unit to anyone. It is centrally located so you walk to coffee or dinner or gelato. Grocery store around the corner. Less than a 5 minute walk to the beach.

Beautiful lawns and pool/BBQ area. Quiet area with very little noises from outside and it has AC! Loved everything about it!

Great Honeymoon destination

  • 5 of 5

Chantal & Rick's beautiful condo was a perfect destination for our honeymoon! It was my first time and my wifes second time on Maui, the condo is perfectly located in Kihei. Walking distance to the beach with plenty of fantastic restaurants within walking distance! The lanai is a perfect spot to begin your day in paradise with coffee supplied by the owners! Kihei Garden Estates is well maintained and a perfect destination for those looking for a relaxing peaceful getaway!

The thoughtful touches throughout the condo really make you feel at home, without the hectic day-to-day chaos. From the books on Maui, to the activity and dining binder, it really allowed us to relax without stressing about what to do next! A must stop is the Maui Brewing Co at the top of Lipoa!

Renter Beware: Nice Condo, Good Location, Poor Customer Service

  • 2 of 5

Rating varies greatly pending if rating the condo, versus the condo owner. Note this review is coming from people who own a condo rental and have lived in Kihei. 1 Star for owner; 4 stars for condo.

Our relationship with the owner started with her double billing us for the room and her getting angry when we asked her to correct the bill. She accused us of not wanting to pay, simply because we didn't want to pay an incorrect bill. Our stay in Kihei was during a period when there were no trade winds (aka hot and stagnant air filled with VOG-like SMOG but from the volcano) and the A/C in the unit is connected to a control freak device that intends to save energy. The A/C instructions state it should stay on all night when the room is dark, but it wouldn't stay on even with the room dark and tape over the sensor; we tried everything. When we asked the owner to remedy the problem her response was to deal with it. Then, I'm not certain what the cleaning fee was for because we picked up the house, took the sheets off the bed and put them in a pile, did the dishes, put all of the dirty towels in a pile and were charged a fee for leaving the house extra dirty. That claim was complete rubbish and you should be aware that you will likely be scammed for an extra cleaning fee after check out.

The condo itself is nice and well stocked. The only complaint about the condo is that the bedroom is small and completely filled with the bed & dresser. This is only a problem because, even with the fan in the room, the air flow isn't great and when the A/C isn't working (note the A/C is on the other end of the condo) and if there are no trade winds it's difficult to sleep.

The laundry is coin pay and just outside of the condo. You're going to need $1/load for the washer and $0.75/load for the dryer. Good luck finding a supply of quarters, there is no guidance provided by the owner and local businesses are hesitant to give out change in quarters. Perhaps bring them or stop at a bank during business hours (aka prime beach hours).

If the internet/wi-fi goes out, there is again no directions. The router is hidden on the book shelf next to the TV, you can find it and reset it there.

The kitchen is very well stocked with spices, oils, pots, pans, silverware, plastic and glass dishes, etc. The refrigerator is large, but the ice machine is not hooked up so you're buying ice or making it in ice cube trays (not adequate for coolers).

2 beach chairs in the unit

Owner's Response: I’m sorry that you felt you had to post a scathing review about myself and my condo. Our policy is that when you book, $300 plus the VRBO service fee is required to hold the booking, and the balance is due 60 days prior to arrival. In late January, I noticed that VRBO indicated that this final payment was due 14 days prior to arrival. VRBO responded by cancelling the balance due, and reissuing a payment request which was due immediately. I hadn’t received a payment a few days later, so I sent a message to the guest. Unbeknownst to me, VRBO also sent out an “automatic” message on my behalf for overdue payments, so this guest received two messages regarding the final payment. When VRBO cancelled one payment and reissued another, the website indicated that there was still an amount outstanding, equal to the final payment, after the guest had made their final payment. The guest contacted me, and very belligerently accused me of trying to double the amount of their rental. I explained that since they had made their final payment they were “good to go” and to disregard the other payment request. Our A/C is controlled by a unit that turns the A/C off after 15 minutes when doors are left open or when it senses no motion. When the guest contacted me about it being uncomfortable at night, I gave him some advice for cooling it down, and said that we’d be replacing the bedroom window and install a window A/C unit at that time. Presently our condo has a Jalousie window in the bedroom that doesn’t accommodate A/C units. The extra cleaning fee was because my housekeeper had to spend extra time cleaning up after these guests. She said, “The trash was to the rim of the can, and dishes in the dishwasher were dirty. There was rubbish on the floor all around, and an unusual amount of sand. I have never seen the unit as dirty and messy as after this guest.” The laundry is as described on my VRBO page, and there are banks within a block of our home that will provide quarters. We constantly upgrade our WIFI modem - we just upgraded the high-speed modem in January, PRIOR to this guest’s arrival. Sorry that we trouble our guests by asking them to buy ice at the store, but we’ve had the ice/water on our fridge fail previously, we’d rather not have to replace the floor again. We’ve never had a guest complain about this before. In all, I try to maintain professionalism and graciousness in my correspondence with ALL our valued guests. It is you who makes our vacation rental a reality.

Great property to discover this beautiful island

We really enjoyed the time in this great condo. The condo provided everything we needed. We regularly used the BBQ area which was very convenient. Chantal was always very helpful so we could enjoy our longer stay on this island!

Mahalo!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very generous review of our vacation home. We try very hard to imagine what our guests would like and use in our home, and provide it for them. The barbecue area is definitely a plus, as it frees up the space on the lanai for furniture that's comfortable and useful. We'd love to welcome you to stay with us again, should your vacation travels bring you back to beautiful Maui.
