About the property

2 Bedroom Upstairs and Studio Downstairs Accommodate Large Families and Groups

Enjoy a tranquil and relaxing get away! Our remodeled 3b/2b house with kitchen, spectacular views and surrounding 20-acre organic farm in Wood Valley, Pahala of the Kau district on the Big Island of Hawaii. The property is adjacent to Kapapala Forest Reserve and the Tibetan Buddhist Temple and just 12 miles from Punalu'u black sand beach and 33 miles from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. There are diverse native and imported vegetation species, a large variety of farm animals and our farm manager/chef on site. Everything you need.

This 2 story, 1775 square foot farm house is divided into 2 separate units. The upstairs has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, a large remodeled kitchen, dining area and a great room with a fireplace. The great room walks out to a covered patio overlooking a beautiful view of the organic farm and the blue Pacific ocean 8 miles away. Check out this video a recent guest made- http://youtu.be/YKoYo_IInh8

Upstairs is completely self-sufficient and can accommodate up to 6 guests, 2 in each bedroom and 2 on couches in the living room. It has phone, cell and Internet access.

The kitchen is fully equipped for gourmet cooking, or you can eat out in nearby Naalehu (Hana Hou Restaurant, Shaka Restaurant and Punalu'u Bakery) or Volcano (Thai Thai Restaurant, Lava Rock Cafe, Kilauea Lodge).

Downstairs has it's own entrance and can be rented together or separately. It is a large room about 500sf with attached bathroom. It can accommodate 4 guests comfortably. It has a microwave but no kitchen.

Matt is the farm manager who lives on the farm in a separate building. He is in charge and is responsible for everything on the farm, including the HomeAway rentals. Having worked in gourmet restaurants in California for 11 years, he is also a professional chef. Guests can make arrangement with him in advance for special meals or for personal chef service.

We are a 20-acre start-up farm in beautiful Wood Valley, Pahala in the Ka’u district of the Big Island of Hawaii. The farm is nicely located on the gentle slope of Mauna Loa, cradled by the horseshoe shaped Wood Valley. Looking out from the house, you can see the serene blue Pacific Ocean and clear sky over a green pasture. At night, there are millions of bright stars surrounding you. The views here are incredible.

Kapapala Forest Reserve is literally right in our own backyard. The Tibetan Buddhist Temple is also our neighbor. If you go further, there is the Ka'u Coffee Mill (better than Kona coffee!), Punalu'u Black Sands beach, South point with incredible cliff diving opportunities, spectacular and secluded Green Sands beach, ... the list goes on.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, feel free to join our farm manager and have some fun! Feed the goats, sheep, chickens, horses and koi fish, collect truly free-range farm-fresh eggs for breakfast, harvest and enjoy a variety of banana species, figs, cherimoya, papaya, mullberries, thimbleberries, coffee and citrus fruits. Or try working in the greenhouse grafting seedlings or transplanting young trees. Explore the beautiful lush grounds that abound with a huge variety of plant species, both indigenous to Hawaii and imported from around the world. Take an adventure hike in the neighboring forest, or easy stroll to the neighboring Buddhist temple.

Enjoy spending time with the variety of farm animals on the property. They are our children and we offer them kindness and protection. No animal on our farm is treated hurtfully and none will be slaughtered. We have 3 goats (Creamy, Happy and Gilligan), 2 pygmy goats (Barney and Angel), 2 cats (Hazel and Basil), 2 dogs (Persephone and Pele), horses and cows that visit from our neighbors to graze the land, 15 chickens and approximately 200 koi in 3 ponds. All the animals are cute, playful and friendly with human. Please treat them gently and nicely. There is also a large variety of wild animals (Mongoose, Jackson's chameleon, Hawaiian wild boar, a large variety of bird species, etc).

About Samantha Travis

Along with my husband and my daughter, I am part of the team of trying to start an organic farm in Wood Valley, Pahala, Hawaii. We are enjoying launching the farm, working hard and are getting lots of help from our farm manager, Matt. We appreciate the guests that come to our farm to share the beauty of the site and enjoy our pet animals, while contributing to further development of the farm. It's a great pleasure to share the unique and joyful experience of living closer to peace and nature with our guests.

Samantha Travis purchased this house in 2014

Why Samantha Travis chose Ka'u District

We offer a Shangri-La experience of life on a sustainable and organic tropical fruit farm and an opportunity to interact with a collection of sweet animals for the whole family to love and enjoy. Wood Valley is the perfect place for it!

What makes this house unique

This property has ideal weather, not too hot like Kona or too rainy like Hilo. It rains just enough for lush vegetation and agriculture to thrive and is sunny much of the time for visitors to explore and enjoy the sites. The mountain spring water is the best in Hawaii -- running directly down from Mauna Loa permafrost. The views are incredible during the day and amazing at night- you will be surprised how many stars you will see!

The house itself was well built and then we put in a great deal of effort and funds to make the quality even better. It's now not just a farm house. It's a 'resort.'

Directions to Becca's Farm and Lodge:

From Hilo:

Becca's Farm is about a 1- 1.5 hr drive from Hilo Airport. Take the main road south toward the volcano (Hwy 11) about 50 miles to Pahala. Turn right at the sign for Pahala Town (Kamani street). When you see the Bank of Hawaii on the left, turn right on Pikake Street, which becomes Wood Valley Road. Drive up past Ka'u coffee plantations and mac nut farms for about 5 miles and you will see the Tibetan Buddhist Temple on the right. The best way from there is to stay right on East Road and it will turn into North Road. (Note that the "Maps" app has you turning left after the temple on South Rd, then right on Center and left on North, which is wrong. It should be right on North at that point, but it is faster just to stay right after the temple and East Rd will become North Rd). You will see the main house on the hill to the right and then as you turn the corner, the cabin closer to the road. The address is 96-2236 North Road, Pahala HI 96777.

From Kona:

Becca's Farm is about a 2- 2.5 hr drive from Kona Airport. Take the main road south (Mamalahoa Hwy - 11) about 75 miles to Pahala. Turn left at the sign for Pahala Town (Kamani street). Stay in an idyllic valley

  • 5 of 5

There is more to Hawaii than just beaches and the Phase III development of Crown Point Heights Valley Beach or whatever it is called in Kona. Enjoy time away in a valley with fruit and coffee trees, inquisitive goats, and many birds. You'll be glad you did.

Wonderful Hawaii Farm Experience

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (2 adults and 3 young children) stayed here in Jan 2017. We had a wonderful time. Most of all we enjoyed the experience on the organic farm with Matt. We helped harvest and roast coffee and gather honey from the beehives. Matt was a great host. Our kids spent their days following him around like he was pied piper. We also had a wonderful camp fire one night.

The home, itself, is very nice. The great room and kitchen a lovely design. There is a covered porch which surrounds the upstairs with great views of the valley. Like others have said, the downstairs is not directly connected to the upstairs. We did not use it, but I think it would be fine for families with older children or multiple sets of adults. Our one constructive criticism of the home is that the mattresses could be better.

The farm is well located for those who want a distant experience from the hustle and bustle of the two big cities on Hawaii. We easily drove to beaches, the volcanoes and snorkeling.

We would recommend this VRBO without hesitation.

Peaceful, Beautiful and very Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We loved Beccas Farm. The home has everything you need to be comfortable. Great kitchen, deck, furniture, bedroom, views, but most of all the Managers. Matt and Andrea made us right at home and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The farm is secluded yet close to the Black Sand Beach and Volcano National Park. We are looking forward to returning!

Relaxing time on working farm.

  • 5 of 5

If you ever wanted to relax on a farm this is the place. The house sits up high on the mountain and overlooks the 20 acre farm. You can see the koy ponds at the side and rear, goats and dogs running around, sheep and the occasional chicken.

Matt who runs the farm is a fabulous chef. We had breakfast and diner prepared while we were there. Matt grows his own coffee. It's the best in the area.

We really enjoyed the morning we toured around the farm and saw all the fruit trees and all the plantings.

This farm was an amazing find.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I felt right at home which was enhanced by the congeniality of caretakers, Matt and Andrea. Their bevy of pets became ours and they shared their knowledge of the farm workings whenever we asked.

The weather was cooler than the Kona side and drier than Hilo. We felt comfortable the entire time and looked forward to returning there after our forays to various sights.

Kitchen was well stocked and we wanted for nothing during our stay.

Our plan is to return to this particular home if we get the opportunity to come back to Hawaii.

Mahalo!!

Beautiful Farm!

  • 5 of 5

I could have spent our entire stay in Hawaii on this farm. It reminded me of rural Latin America in the jungle- incredibly lush and beautiful, a dirt road leading up to the house, the dogs and chickens roaming free, fruit trees around the property, and milking goats in the morning. Our toddler had a ball, and so did we. The upstairs part of the house is absolutely perfect and fully stocked with everything you need. The downstairs does not have the same appeal. Matt is very kind, helpful, and welcomed participation on the farm. One of the dogs, Sherlock, barks a lot and seemed nervous at times around us. It was somewhat intimidating for our toddler, but after a few days our son couldn't wait to get back to the farm to see him. Matt is a good chef and cooked us a meal for our first night there. It was very nice not to have to prepare anything ourselves after a long plane ride and then a 2.5 hour drive. The pricing did seem somewhat steep for what we got. Overall we loved it!!
