Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We had a family gathering here of four couples with two suckling infants. Everyone had sufficient room. I am handicapped ( crutches and braces) and was able to negotiate the house well. There is a family picture of a "Mama" holding a bottle of wine with a big smile on her face that graphically portrays she is glad to see us; indeed we felt very welcomed there! The kitchen is HUGE, with plenty of room for culinary pursuits. We were there the weekend before Thanksgiving.

By the way, don't do as I did and arrive after dark. The house is surrounded with large shrubs and trees and in the dark is nearly impossible to see, as there are no lights on in that area. (But that lends to the privacy you'll have). If you want to be at home away from home, this is a wonderful place to stay!

Very spacious and comfortable.

We enjoyed staying at this property. Very roomy and pleasant. Grounds were very pretty and deer came to the kitchen window.

Rustic & Charming, But ...

  • 2 of 5

Pros:

- House is rustic and charming. It clearly has an interesting history and lots of family memories.

- House is spacious, both inside and out. Bedrooms are large, multiple rooms for family gatherings, sits on 10 acres of land, and has a barn for additional gathering space.

Cons:

- No A/C. This was never disclosed to us. I booked this for me, my husband, and my in laws in their 70s. My MIL spoke to the owner upon arrival and was told that she could use floor/box fans in the house. Temperatures in our bedroom were 82-84 on average each day (according to the thermometer attached to our wall), and "cooled" down to 78 by 11 PM. This was with all windows and screen doors open all weekend.

- No cell phone coverage. This was disclosed to us after reservation was confirmed. We left my 2 year old and 4 year old back home in Atlanta so communication was a must. It wouldn't have been such an issue if the house phones had worked.

- House phones don't work. There are phones all around the house, but we only found 2 with dial tones. When you dial out on either one, the other party cannot hear you talk.

- I messaged the owner on Friday morning of our weekend stay to discuss some of these questions/concerns that we had with the house upon arrival. I still have not received any response.

Lastly, a neutral comment:

The house is on the market so be prepared to accommodate realtor requests for showings.

Thanksgiving Holiday

  • 5 of 5

The home was very close to downtown Highlands, near Mirror Lake. Homeowner was immediately responsive to questions before and upon arrival. The property was expansive. There was a wooden swing near the party barn that was enjoyed by everyone. There was plenty of outside space for throwing the football, taking pictures, etc. The kitchen was large enough for "two cooks in the kitchen". Especially enjoyed using the double oven when preparing our Thanksgiving meal. There was plenty of room in the home, which was nice since we had two families with teen/adults. Everyone had a bed. The layout of the home allowed us all to be together, even if we weren't always in the same room. We enjoyed visiting Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls, Silver Run Falls, and Sunset Rock. Homeowners provided a book with directions to all. We cut down our Christmas tree at Moss Creek Farm (an annual tradition). Celebrated the beginning of Christmas in Highlands. Spent Saturday evening singing Christmas carols in front of the church while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies. Saw Santa and his entourage, and then did the countdown for the lighting of the Christmas tree. Home is extremely close to shopping and the two grocery stores in Highlands. Mountain Fresh Grocery is also a great place to catch a meal or a pizza. Always enjoy the Sports Page Sandwich Shop. Home is about 20 minutes away from Cashiers. Visited the Farmer's Market there for a delicious take home barbeque meal and a warm blueberry pie. Spending time with family and friends was the highlight of the trip. Everyone had a wonderful time.

Excellent location, well stocked and great value

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights for a destination wedding. Had a great time hiking and exploring the town. This is a very relaxing home well stocked with kitchen stuff, games, books, mags, wifi, and plenty of room inside and out. Very easy transaction no surprises, will rent again.

Excellent location, fabulous lot, inviting family home

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for a family getaway. The two master suites on the main floor make this house perfect for two families traveling together. There are also two bedrooms upstairs that would be great for adults or children. The location is excellent -- it's a quick drive to Highlands and also not far from Cashiers. And you have so much space on the property. Our children loved playing in the huge yard. Dede, the property manager, is extremely helpful and kind -- she was a joy to work with. The house is fully stocked with anything you may need. We loved our time at this home and hope to stay here again in the future.
