About Buz and Laura Sawyer

About the owners

We stumbled upon Stonington in 2012 when looking for a country home near NYC that would offer year-round outdoor activities and a natural setting that would nourish the soul.

As is true for many people, we had heard of Mystic, CT and Watch Hill, RI, but Stonington had slipped under our radar. Stonington has the quality of a hidden gem, situated between these popular tourist destinations. All it took was a stroll through Stonington Borough (SO charming!), a drive through the surrounding New England countryside, and a day at the beach to convince us that we had found our place. THEN we found our home, which is truly one of a kind, built as a labor of love by the former owner, who had a deep love of architecture and an immaculate eye for detail. We have loved every moment spent in the house since, and have yet to scratch the surface of area activities; there is so much to do!

As much as we love being here, we often are not, due to work and other commitments. In turn, for the first time, we rented the house out on a very limited basis in the summer of 2015, and we have decided to make it available again in a similar way in 2016. If you choose to rent Wheeler Farm, we hope that you will enjoy the property and surrounding area as much as we do, and create wonderful memories here of your own. We are happy to answer any questions you may have. Please feel to contact us.

Warmly,

Laura and Buz

What makes this estate unique

Having rented our home out for three years we have found it to be ideal for small family multi-generational holidays. The basement media room is for family movie night, and a place to park kids when the adults are upstairs.

This property really delivers. The home is comfortable, spacious and well-appointed. All beds were very comfortable. The home was clean and contained all conveniences. The grounds are spectacular including the patio, pool and hot tub. Just a few minutes from Stonington and Mystic in a very private setting. Do not think twice about choosing this property for your next visit to this area.

Everything you could hope for on vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two kids and I just returned from a week's long vacation at Buz and Laura's absolutely stunning home in Stonington, CT. The trip from Westchester County, NY is easy--a mere 2 hours. Pulling up to the home, we were awe struck to see a private pebble driveway the length of many public roads. The front yard is sprawling, with a gently rolling lawn and beautiful stone walls and wood gates. The home itself is a new construction but made to feel like an authentic, old farmhouse. It has every single modern amenity you could imagine and want (e.g., surround sound music system, flat screen TVs, amazingly beautiful, updated bathrooms, new appliances in the kitchen, etc.) but a charm and sophistication that cannot be matched. Wide planked wood floors, beautiful lighting, tasteful décor, beautiful linens and wonderful furnishings are only a few of the features. Within hours we felt settled in and at home. In addition to the stunning home, the salt water pool (with small waterfall feature, electric cover and perfectly warm water) was a highlight of our stay. We had amazing weather and enjoyed our daily swims and pool-side BBQ's. Near the home and pool is a small tea-cup house with additional bedroom that we didn't use but found to be incredibly charming and a very cool barn with an upstairs that our kids got a kick out of. Although we ventured out of the house daily to explore downtown Mystic, Olde Mystic Village, Stonington Village (so quaint and charming!), Watch Hill, RI and the Essex steam train and boat ride, we made sure to spend half of each day just relaxing at the house either swimming or using the grounds to fly a kite, kick a soccer ball or go for a stroll. On the same road as the house is a cow farm and an alpaca farm, each of which made our kids scream with delight!

I truthfully cannot say enough good things about this home, our stay or the kindness of our host and hostess, Buz and Laura. They were communicative with us from start to end and ensured that we had everything we needed. This home and vacation provided us with not just a vacation, but a week filled with family memories that we will never forget. If Buz and Laura will have us, we will be back next year!!!

Perfect home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This home, with it's spectacular grounds, is beautifully appointed yet very comfortable, with everything you need for the perfect family gathering! The Sawyers are great guides to the area, which has many wonderful sights to visit. This is our second time having a large family reunion at the house. We can't wait to go back.

Deserving of a House Beautiful cover and feature story!

  • 5 of 5

As you approach Wheeler Farm you see a grand lawn with exquisite stone fences that divide the seven acres into smaller sections. With a weathered gray barn and split-rail fence completing the picture, the winding drive up to the house is breathtaking. As Buz and Laura showed us through their home we admired the colonial style décor, which while remaining true to the architecture of those times, also offers the best amenities in appliances and modern conveniences as the house is less than 10 years old. More surprises awaited outside as the rear blue stone patio led to a small “tea house” and an elegant salt-water pool situated so you can see almost the entire 7 acres and the best that nature has to offer. As our hosts pulled off after wishing us well we noticed they left us some fresh ground coffee for the mornings and a bottle of wine for an evening’s celebration. I cannot imagine a more tranquil place to call home while exploring the treasures of SE Connecticut. And there is indeed much to explore. Walking along the road on which Wheeler Farm is located you pass other elegant homes as well as working farms such as the majestic Stillmeadow Alpaca Farm and the Terra Firma Farm. Hopping into our car we were within minutes of the quaint, welcoming village of Stonington; Mystic and it’s Seaport Village; and the Stonington Vineyard. When we drove a bit further towards the Connecticut River we enjoyed a day in Old Lyme - home of American Impressionism and the Griswold Museum. I look forward to returning soon to Wheeler Farm. It is a dream come true.

Perfect Stay in Stonington

  • 5 of 5

Family of 5 had a wonderful winter stay at Wheeler Farm. Property is beautifully appointed, comfortable and fun (hot tub, media room in basement and lots of outdoor space to explore). Charm of a farm house with benefits of a new home. We enjoyed everything about our stay and highly recommend it for others.

5 star all the way

  • 5 of 5

3 generations of our family aged 11-83 stayed at beautiful Wheeler Farm for 10 days. Everything at the property has been carefully considered and tastefully executed. The photos show how picturesque the setting is. It is also beautifully maintained inside and out with everything you need entertain the family and for everyone to have space, comfort and peace and quiet if they need it. The property is located in a tranquil spot a few miles from the town of Mystic and each surrounding property has several acres each, so there's no noise which makes for nice quiet, privacy. The beds are all very comfortable and we slept wonderfully well. From the Master, we heard the voices of early risers in the family carry up from the kitchen in the morning but it was nothing a quick word and a pair of earplugs didn't fix. A TV in the master meant I could lounge on the great master bed while catching up on my own TV shows when I needed a bit of R&R of my own, the kids could disappear downstairs to the media room or outside, make their own fun in the garden. We had few days where we left the house: the weather was superb and we enjoyed being by the pool, reading and hanging out together. The outdoor furniture is of very high quality and most comfortable. I loved the outside shower, a great way to end the afternoon after enough sun and swim. The grounds are big enough to enjoy a good 20 min stroll, I jogged up and down the hill and driveway when I needed to exercise and my husband found some nice longer running routes that looped around the area. We saw deer, dragonflies, humming birds, crayfish, crickets, hawks and had no bother with mosquitoes. The fridge was huge and all the appliances in the kitchen were of superb quality and well maintained. We cooked dinners and ate round the table for most lunches and dinners, stocking up at the great local farmers markets and supermarket in Mystic. There are some beautiful towns nearby, within a reasonable drive, in CT and RI. We had great excursions to Westerley, Newport and Mystic and enjoyed our drives around taking in the scenery. On our last evening we enjoyed a few hours on the Argia from Mystic, to see the beautiful sunset from the water. We all felt right at home here and I would go back in a heartbeat. Buz and Laura made the preparations and the stay nice and easy and were a delight to deal with every step of the way. We are truly grateful to them for sharing their home with us and hope to visit again.
