Overview

About the property

Originally, Legacy House was a 'Surfman's Cottage' for Coast Guard personnel on Plum Island. It was floated to Washington Island by my grandfather in the 1940's. He reconstructed the home on this beautiful 9 acre parcel and remodeled it after his retirement from the Coast Guard. You can see the transformation the house has gone through in the photo gallery. Photos will be updated this spring to reflect our newest improvements.

Legacy House is a quiet retreat, an escape only minutes away from Schoolhouse Beach, the Recreation Center, the Trueblood Performing Arts Center, and every other venue on the Island. The front yard is the perfect place to sit with your morning coffee and experience a stunning sunrise! Or recline in the evening with your favorite libation and witness wildlife first hand. As the sun sets, the deer, geese, heron, and turkeys all come out and parade through the sky overhead and the fields across the way.

If you choose to stay home to eat, we have a full kitchen, appliances, dishes, and silverware. There's even an easy-to-use gas grill outside. We have an assortment of small appliances for your convenience, including 12 cup coffee maker, hand mixer, electric skillet, bread maker, etc. You can wind down by the fire pit in the evening and make s'mores for dessert.

If you choose to dine out, Washington Island offers an incredible variety of choices from 'home cooking' to 'gourmet', from Island delicacies like fresh lawyers to custom pizzas with locally grown veggies.

For the fishermen (and women), we have a fish cleaning station with table, running water, and garbage. There is limited freezer space in the kitchen refrigerator/freezer.

About Deb Sheridan

I am the granddaughter of the original owner of this house. Born, but not raised on the Island, I did spend most summers at the house as a child and later visited every year. Marvin, my grandfather was born and raised on the Island, as was his father.

Deb Sheridan purchased this house in 2014

Why Deb Sheridan chose Door County

Legacy House, as we now call it, belonged to my grandparents, Marvin & Gudrun Jepsen. My uncle Bob bought it from my grandma after Marvin passed in the 80's. I was so excited to purchase this property from my cousins and all the memories attached to it. This is not just someone's home, this is a Legacy.

The Legacy House was Great!

  • 5 of 5

The Legacy House was a quiet escape from the normal commitments of life. Plenty to do on the island if you don't want to sit back and relax.

Very pleasanat stay with nice house owner Deb & Mike

  • 5 of 5

It was quite a pleasant stay. We visited Washington Island with family and friends. Deb & Mike were very nice and friendly to stop by and say hello. House was conveniently located. Water was not best though. It has a very bad smell of sulfur and iron. I recommend carrying plenty of waters to drink particularly if you're travelling with kids. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Good location near schoolhouse beach

  • 4 of 5

Simple and clean dwelling and everything was as described. A good place for our family of 6 to sleep and have as a "home base" for our first stay on the island. Our boys loved School House beach so being close to that was great. I recommend bringing your own firewood if you want to use the fire pit (we did) and we used sleeping bags and brought our own linens to skip the linen fee. Was a nice stay.

Comfortable Island Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five rented this property for three weeks in July and August. The home is clean, comfortable and just as pictured. The location is excellent - walk to Schoolhouse Beach, the Farm Museum and Fiddler's Green Pub. The home is on a quiet road with a lovely view. The road connects to others nearby, providing a nice, shady, nearly 2 mile loop for walkers & runners. It is minutes from town, Jackson Harbor, and Little Lake. Beautiful mature trees on the property will show brilliant colors for fall renters.

Mike and Deb are kind, welcoming hosts who love Washington Island and know it well. They were available during our stay to provide help and information.

Legacy house is perfect for families and friends looking for a quiet getaway on Washington Island.
