About Bill Briggs

My wife and I grew up near the Great Lakes and really enjoy being around water. Shortly after moving to Georgia, we found ourselves missing home and the beauty and peace of the water. After looking high and low for several years, we found what we feel is the best lake situation on what is a true hidden gem in the southeast, Lake Hartwell.

We have raised two boys, now approaching their teens, and hosted dozens of our friends at this home. We have enjoyed holidays, special occasions, vacations, and mostly just time on the weekends escaping the busy and fast pace of our lives in the Atlanta Area.

Having grown up on the water, we enjoy all that it has to offer: boating, water sports, and fishing. The lake has great fishing and is home to the Bass Master Classic and over 21 species of fish.

Below the Hartwell Dam, Lake Hartwell provides the main headwaters to the Savanah River. We have enjoyed fly-fishing for trout in this area, as well as walks across the dam and surrounding parks.

Bill Briggs purchased this house in 2002

Why Bill Briggs chose Hartwell Lake

What we love most about this property is where we are located. We are have the serenity and seclusion of the lake surrounded by a farming community just 15 minutes outside of the small historic town of Hartwell.

We have convenience both on and off the water with access to all of the surrounding amenities from the nearby boat ramp, marina, state park, and small town contrasted with the serene views and quite of the lake.

Our property is situated on a cul-de-sak with woods and gardens creating a private setting. The cove opens to a larger part of the lake with beautiful views and great water.

In the mornings you can enjoy watching the sunrise while sipping on a cup of coffee from the boat dock, or beautiful screened in porch.

We enjoy taking walks down to the boat ramp where there is a public boat dock and access to the lake for pulling boats in and out of the water. The boat ramp is convenitently close within minutes, and once you are on the water our dock sits around the point which keeps it quite and free from traffic. Nearby Hartwell Marina has a boat store, grill, and is open for public refueling on the water. During the summer months, the Marina is also home to local bands and weekend shows accessible by boat, or car.

Lake Hartwell covers a land area of 56,000 acres and has a shoreline of 962 miles. Unlike some of the smaller lakes nearer Atlanta, Lake Hartwell is neither crowded nor contaminated. On most days, including holidays we find ourselves alone on the lake secluded, visiting islands and treasure hunting as our boys have come to know it.

We are located in some of the best water on the lake with depths of 65 feet in the channel as you leave the cove into the main body of water with depths of over 200 feet as you approach the Hartwell Dam just minutes away by boat.

What makes this house unique

A few things that make our lake home unique is the beautiful screened in porch and adjoing sunroom with bar, fireplace, and oversized table that sits 8-10 people with plenty of room for others in the kitchen and on the patio. We built the home with access to the lake and enjoyment of the outdoors top of mind.

The floor plan is open with serene views and access to the outside from nearly every room. The kitchen, sunroom, and screened porch all have doorways that lead onto the open patio area in the back of the home nearest the lake.

The patio is fully equipped with umbrella table, chairs, and grills; a children's playground complete with a sand pile, slide, fort, and swings; and, a rustic fire pit for making smores, or enjoying a late night fire and glass of wine.

The dock can fit a boat up to 26' and has a large swim platform complete with table, chairs, and plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the sun and swimming in the lake. There is a kayak / paddle board on the dock along with life jackets available for your use along with many other toys and necessities for your enjoyment on the lake.

Extremely clean and well kept, as well as fully stocked with everything you might need!

We had a terrific stay at Blue Bottom Cove! Pictures do not do justice to this beautiful property. We felt very at home during our stay, and the home and surrounding property is clean and tidy. We enjoyed putting our boat in at the ramp just around the corner and being able to keep it in the water at the dock. The house is convenient to downtown Hartwell and surrounding state parks, as well as Clemson University! We will visit again!

Perfect location for a beautiful lake house.

  • 5 of 5

We had two couples and 6 children ages nine and under and this was a great house for all of us. The house was immaculate when we arrived and we definitely had enough space for everyone to spread out and have their own space, even at bed time. The kitchen was fabulous with its huge island and upgraded range, the two wine fridges in the family room really came in handy for all of the local wine we bought on our winery tours, and the screened porch was a favorite for morning coffee. The outdoor fire pit got a lot of use as well. We used it to cook up some hot dogs for the kids and steak for the adults one night and s'mores for everyone a few nights. We even built fires at dusk other nights just to enjoy the relaxing surroundings and chat with each other. It was perfection. The surrounding woods are gorgeous and provided the five boys we had with us hours of exploring fun. The path down to the lake is an easy slope that was even doable for the two year old. The lake front provided more endless fun for the kids with its wide shoreline and beach area that was easy for them to swim in. Just be forewarned that it is red Georgia clay down there, and not sand, that gets on everything and is almost impossible to wash out. Not that we cared or that it slowed the kids down at all, but just a word to the wise. We fished and swam from the dock and rented a pontoon boat for 4 days from Hartwell Marina, which is right around the bend so that made pick up and drop off easy. We got out on the boat as much as possible and had a blast tubing and jumping in for a swim, it was HOT. Lake Hartwell is huge and we had an awesome time exploring it, we even pulled up onto one of the uninhabited islands for a little exploring and fishing. It was so cool! Hartwell is a great location as well as we made day trips to Greenville, SC, the wineries around Dahlonega, GA, and then made our annual trek to have lunch in Helen, GA. We even made it to Unicoi State Park near Helen for the first time. It was absolutely beautiful! We wished we had more time to go swimming at the swimming beach and to also go tubing down the river through Helen. Bill Briggs was a great host and was always available through phone, email or text to answer our questions or address any concerns we had. The house was perfect for our stay! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!

Love this beautiful home!

Wow! What a lovely, spacious and fun place to spend a vacation! Our family spent four nights at this VRBO and we thoroughly enjoyed the accommodations. The kitchen was well stocked with backup supplies and the bedrooms worked well for our group of three couples plus our infant grandson. The dining room and sitting area is huge and is adjacent to the lanai which was the perfect place to watch the rain fall after a sunny day on the dock. The cove is very private with great water for easy boat access. We had a blast and hope to come back again when our grandson is old enough to use the kiddie play area. Thanks Bill!

Great property and super kid friendly!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay! The house was perfect and very well maintained and decorated! The property was perfect for our three small kids - from the large family rooms to the playground as well as the level lot down to the lake and even the ladder "steps" at the dock! Made it much easier with the kiddos! We also really enjoyed the kayaks! We will definitely be back!

First Class property!!!

  • 5 of 5

The owners have provided a beautiful and comfortable home to share with renters. They have thought of everything you need for a wonderful family vacation. The little ones loved digging in the 'sand pile" and playing on the gym set. The older ones loved fishing and swimming at the dock. This property is one of the few we have stayed at that looked better in person than in the pictures. Thank you to the Briggs for your thoughtful hospitality!!

Lake Hartwell — is without a doubt one of the most beautiful lakes in the Southeastern United States. Being fed by two rivers that come right out of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the water in Lake Hartwell is reported to be more pure than in many municipal water systems. Standing on our boat dock you can look down through 10-12 feet of crystal clear water at small pebbles and fish on the bottom of the lake.

Lake Hartwell covers a land area of 56,000 acres and has a shoreline of 962 miles. Stretched out in one straight line, this would span the distance from Atlanta, Georgia to Buffalo, New York.

Unlike some of the smaller lakes nearer Atlanta, Lake Hartwell is neither crowded nor contaminated.

Having a depth of up to 202 feet, the 21 species of edible fish in Lake Hartwell have plenty of room to navigate – and yet they seem readily available to latch onto minnows, artificial lures and other fish bait.
