This county is home to the magnificent Bluestone Dam, Bluestone Wildlife Fishing and Hunting Area, Bluestone Lake, Pipestem Resort State Park, Bluestone State Park, whitewater rafting, and a historic district that contains dozens of examples of early architecture from the late 1800s, when Hinton was chosen as a hub for the C & O Railroad and the building boom began. Fast forward to one hundred years later, and you will find the remains of small town Americana, with brick streets and many historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places found along the walking tour of the small, picturesque town. The legendary John Henry, the steel drivin' man worked on the rail lines in Summers County over a hundred years ago and fascinated visitors may still find the old tunnel where the famous race took place at nearby Talcott, West Virginia. The oldest house in West Virginia may be found at Lowell, WV, the Graham House, a rustic old log structure that has withstood attacks by the Shawnee Indians. The scenic Greenbrier River summons visitors to take a scenic and serene kayak trip down its lazy twists and turns. The beautiful New River has the best fishing East of the Mississippi and a more lively whitewater rafting trip may be found on this 52-stretch of river managed by the National Park Service. About the owner: We are long time residents of Hinton, West Virginia, and spent many years actively involved in its restoration and beautification. We happily invite visitors to enjoy what we have enjoyed and loved for so many years!
Why the Owner Chose Hinton, WV, USA:
After admiring this home for years, we became the owners of this property from its original owner and builder (born in 1888). As a young teen, my husband used to deliver groceries to the elderly owner of this home and was one of a very few ever invited inside to see it. Decades later we found ourselves in the right place at the right time when the home was offered for sale. The opportunity to own this home, raise our children in it, and restore it to its original state has been a lifelong endeavor filled with love. Today, our children grown and gone, we now enjoy sharing the home's beauty and history with others.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Guests will enjoy learning a great deal about the history of the town and the home. Shortly after purchasing the home in the early 1980s, my husband and I were lucky enough to be able to interview a close friend of the original owner, who had passed away. The friend was in her 90s at the time of the interview but was sharp and remembered dates, times, and many other recollections from the early days! This dear lady provided me with the foundation for my history that I have shared with hundreds of visitors and sadly, passed away just two weeks after the interview took place. I have always been very thankful that I took the time to talk to her and gather so much important information about our home.
