About Sarah Close

I'm a regular soccer mom with a grown up college graduated daughter who works and lives nearby, and 9 year old at the local elementary school. I grew up in Madison, WI, and have lived in a variety of places in my adult life....most recently moving here from St. John, USVI. We swim, paddle board, surf, bike, run and will knock each other out of the way to get to a treasured piece of sea glass. I rehab houses, sell real estate and manage hotels for a living. I'm currently working on training my two Newfoundlands so that they can get their therapy dog certifications. Some days they listen, some days they eat my lunch when I'm not looking. They love the beach as much as the rest of us.

Sarah Close purchased this house in 2009

Why Sarah Close chose Northern Coast & Outer Banks

When my daughter began college in Boston, I decided my son and I should move back to the states and be somewhere on the east coast so that we could more easily get together for holidays and family time. So...I bought a car and just started driving up and down the coast until I found a spot that had the right vibe. Yes, really. The natural beauty of the Outer Banks, the warmness of the locals here, and the lack of high rise buildings on the beach sold me. Somewhere along the way, I decided that I only wanted to live in amazing places that people want to vacation in. It was really important to me that I be able to get to the beach without getting in my car. I was also important to me to be close enough to modern conveniences (gas station/grocery store/highway) without having to see or hear them. This little cottage, under the siding, is one of the 1950's concrete block flat topped houses you'll see in this neighborhood. She's solid and sturdy (a little like me I suppose), and seen her share of storms. I'm all about the character and quality of older homes, and making them shine in their best light.

What makes this house unique

This house has some benefits you don't find easily here in the Outer Banks. First of all, it's on the ground! No steps means no hauling luggage, groceries, or beach gear up and down multiple times during your stay. It also has a completely fenced in back yard, which makes it safer for small children and more private for the whole family. It's the perfect size and price point for folks who don't necessarily want to vacation in a 10 bedroom house with a large group of people. Because the house is concrete and on a side street, it's much quieter than most of it's counterparts. I live in this house during the off season, so I think you'll find it far more updated and well thought out than most beach cottages.

Great for a small family!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed staying here. The house was in a great location to OBX shops, restaurants and the beach. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils, the beds were comfortable, and the one floor and fenced in backyard was perfect for our dog. Thanks for a great stay!

Perfect for 2 adults, 4kids & the dog

  • 4 of 5

The house was clean & newly & nicely renovated. It wasn't a hodgepodge thrift store put together. All amenities included for everything to cook which I did almost every day. Downside was I had to wash towels everyday as there were only 5 and there were 6 of us. Kmart was convenient to buy toilet paper, dish washer detergent, trash bags, & paper towels because only 1-2 extra were available. Even those things are supplied in hotels. So bring extra or use mine that I left for the next few renters. Also had to buy a grill brush for cleaning someone else's mess. Bring your own beach chairs, the ones provided are small & rusty. Very close to the beach so easy walk. Good experience for our first ever trip to OBX.

Cute, comfortable and clean cottage

  • 4 of 5

This cottage is adorable, very clean. The kitchen was easy to use, convenient with all the tools we needed for meals. It is a very quiet neighborhood even though it is a block from the main highway. Very easy three block walk to the beach, there is a pedestrian cross walk to get across the busy road. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it highly.

Nice home

  • 4 of 5

This is a nice home for a small group to stay in. The fenced in back yard was helpful for the dogs. The owner stayed in touch as a tropical storm was approaching. It would be 5 stars, but I never found the DVD player that was supposed to be there. It was clean when we arrived, despite the tropical storm. I would book there again.

Feels Like Home

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect. It had everything you needed, nice sheets, towels, all new kitchen essentials which is so important when renting a house. The freezer pumped out ice like crazy, you never seem to have enough ice when at the beach, not this time. I've never stayed at a pet friendly place before because they just are not up to my standards. This house is certainly an exception, I give it 10 starts for cleanliness. You would never know there were pets there except that my dogs were sniffing around, only they knew for sure. I really like that the master bedroom and bathroom are separate from the other bedrooms. The neighborhood is little older and the homes are close together but you cannot hear a thing when you are inside the house. There was even a deck rebuild going on next door and we never even heard a sound. Thanks for a lovely week Sarah.

Amazing vacation home

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week in July 2016 with our 8 month old puppy and we couldn't have asked for a better place. OBX is very pet friendly, but it's not easy to find a place with a fenced-in yard for the dog, which was a must for us with a puppy. It was perfect! He loved running around with a soccer ball and just laying in the grass under the sun. The home itself is only a few blocks walk from the beach on a quiet street and is great for a small group. It was updated, clean, beautifully decorated, and had everything we needed to feel like we were at home. Sarah was very responsive before, during and after our stay if we had any questions. The house is centrally located on the island, so getting dinner or running errands was never too difficult. It's also less than a mile from a fantastic doggy daycare (The Holistic Pet Shop), so three days of the week our pup got lots of playtime with other dogs while we enjoyed to the beach. We would stay here again in an heartbeat.

1 1/2 blocks from house!
Car: necessary

Located at milepost 6, Avalon Limin' is an easy block and a half from the beach! The Avalon Pier is right next to the house's beach access, and there are several restaurants within walking distance. Tucked on a quiet street, the local movie theater is less than a mile away...and the Wright Brother's Memorial Museum is just down the road about 2 miles. Very convenient to the best that the Outer Banks has to offer.
