Immaculate comfortable cottage. Lovely helpful host!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were able to visit most of the of the Big Island's sights from our base here in Wamea and do some snorkeling at the fabulous Captain Cook Cove in Kona as well. Host Linda was very helpful and the cottage was immaculate, included everything we needed (including a cooler and ice packs!), and was very comfortable.

Very clean, comfortable and a tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been to the big island several times. This was our first stay in Waimea. We loved it!

All the extra touches that Linda put in made the visit extra welcoming. We will be back!

Peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

The beautiful setting was perfect after two weeks in the high density of Kona. The weather was also very different.....the accommodations are "comfortable cozy" and private. Our hosts Zachary and Linda were conscientious and enjoyable. The price point is spot on. We had a wonderful six night stay. Two cautions which were not a problem for us: have some warm clothes because the temp did get into the 50's.....plan on keeping your meals simple because it is an economy kitchen, but it was well equipped. We had access to a washer and dryer and larger refrigerator in the garage. This property fit all our needs and expectations.

A quiet, comfortable place for an extended stay on the Big Island in a great location

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this cottage (or home I would say) for 18 days in December. The purpose of my trip was to explore the Big Island for potential rentals for a year for me and my wife now that we're both retired. Pros: (1) Linda and her husband were 100% accommodating when I had a question or needed anything. A+ for graciousness. Examples: all the firewood I wanted for the winter nights with unusual cold spell for December. (At a refreshing 2500 ft above sea level.) And that firewood -- small logs as heavy as cast iron, Hawaiian hardwood that burns for hours.

(2) Fully furnished kitchen. No dishwasher and small sink, but that was all fine even though I cooked almost all meals for myself.

(3) New huge capacity washer and dryer in the attached garage, with soap provided and it is for the renter (just me) only!

(4) Beautiful countryside landscape with a variety of local trees and lots of birds with all their different songs. Great star gazing at night in the clear mountain air in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The Keck Astronomical Observatory is nearby, with their office between this home and town.

(5) Super comfortable mattress in the large bedroom with antique wood desk. Wifi worked great.

(6) Paved driveway with parking place right next to front door.

Cons: the only thing I can come up with for cons is that this little neighborhood is not easy walking distance to town. It is walkable to the farmer's and crafts market on Saturdays, but it's another 15-minute or so (not sure of exact distance) further walk to Waimea (aka Kamuela) town. If you are expecting restaurants and nightlife steps from your rental home, this is not it. But if you don't mind driving 5-10 minutes, you're fine. It was only an issue for me because I can't drive at night and I was traveling solo.

Summary: I recommend this rental if you want a quiet, comfortable retreat with approximately 30-minute access to the Hamakua Coast or North or South Kohala Coast, this is a great place.

Nice cottage in a lovely, convenient setting

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our comfortable, 4-night stay here. We chose this location to be our home base for seeing the north end of the island. We loved the drive on Rte. 250 over the mountain to Hawi. It was also very convenient for doing the horseback ride through Waipi’o Valley. We definitely got the flavor and an appreciation for the ‘upcountry’ part of the island.

The cottage has a very pretty setting with a big yard, big trees, and mountain views. While there was some always-changing weather that seemed to blow in across the top of the mountain, we did see a beautiful, star-filled night sky that took our breath away.

Because of the intermittent breezy, misty weather and cooler temperatures, we did use the nice little wood-burning stove. My husband enjoys fire building and tending, and it gave the cottage more of a ‘cabin’ feel.

The cottage had all the desired conveniences, and Linda thoughtfully provided some beautiful fresh fruit, Kona coffee, and an ample amount of firewood. Restaurants in Waimea were easy to get to, especially the Fish and the Hog!

Lovely Setting

  • 4 of 5

The Cottage was located on a lovely quiet street with beautiful trees and a great view of the hills. We found the place to be clean and well maintained. This is the wet side of Waimea but a quick drive to the east brought us in to town to the very nice shopping areas. The restaurants are very good. We liked Merriman's and Luna's - didn't have time to try them all. The people of Waimea are warm and friendly as was our host who was very helpful to us.

The Kreck observatory was a great place to visit to learn about Mauna Kea. And the weekend farmers market was a must. We bought delicious vegetables for the salads we enjoyed every day in the cottage as well as irresistible non edibles.

Even with the misty clouds rolling in off and on through the day we did observe beautiful starry skies.

The only negatives I would say is that the sofa wasn't very comfortable - maybe that's just me with my bad back. And also a lamp near the dining table would have been a nice touch. But all in all a good experience. Thank you Linda.
