Hawaii Island's white sand beaches consistently rank in listings of the world's Top 10. Nearby Hapuna Beach with its half-mile crescent of white sand was recently ranked #3 in the world for best family beaches. Beyond our breathtaking shores, a host of nearby outdoor adventures and exploring the island's varied terrains accommodate those of foot, horseback or sightseeing by car or ATV explorers and hunters.

The late owners of Doi Cottage, Nelson and Eiko Doi, were beloved Waimea residents with deep roots on the Big Island. Nelson’s issei (first generation Japanese immigrant) father, Tadaichi Doi, and mother Chieno raised 6 stalwart sons mainly in Kawaihae. They eked a living fishing, farming, and ultimately running a service station, boat repair shop, and Doi General Store. Theirs was a pivotal, community-centered enterprise. Kamaaina (long-time residents) can relate stories of the Dois’ impact on locals.

Fourth son Nelson, a devoted and respected public servant, served as territorial and state senator, circuit court judge, and lieutenant governor. An avid

student of the US Constitution, he took tremendous pride in working with colleagues to pen the Hawaii State Constitution and gain statehood.

Developer Laurence Rockefeller sought Nelson’s counsel and friendship during the construction of his renown Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. In retirement Nelson used his political capital and negotiation skills to help North Hawaii Community Hospital come to fruition. The Doi legacy affects residents and visitors alike.

Perfect Place to celebrate the holidays!

  • 5 of 5

We came to Waimea to spend the holidays with family. This was the perfect home for us. The lay out is amazing! Every family member from the 4 year old to the 74 year old had a wonderful stay! The home is centrally located so it was easy to take day trips to many places on the island. We headed to the beach with the little ones while the others drove to the volcano, went up the hill to Hawi to do a zip line and all would meet up daily at the Doi cottage for dinner on the beautiful lanai!

Beautiful Home Located at Base of Kohala Mountains

  • 5 of 5

The Doi Cottage is an expansive home with a fantastic lawn and lanai ideal for large groups or vacationing families. We stayed at the Doi Cottage as long-term guests and were very impressed with the hospitality and consistency the site manager, Aimee Love, provided to our team. The house was very quiet, clean and well maintained and includes a multitude of amenities that are ideal for long or short term guests. We were particularly pleased with the kitchen area and all of the extra equipment/appliances they provide for your use (e.g., rice cooker, multiple blenders). The back lanai also has a large BBQ and extra folding tables and chairs for additional guests.

Another highlight, the cottage is centrally located between Hilo and Kona so a great starting point for day trips.

Overall, we were very pleased with our stay and will continue to use this cottage in the future!

Good location; large, pleasant house, good kitchen and courtyard.

  • 4 of 5

The Doi Cottage has a large front lawn with many hibiscus flowers in bloom. The Doi family is important in the history of Hawaii. There is plenty of Aloha Spirit in this place. Parts of the house, including a living room fireplace, are old and original stonework. The cottage is really a large ranch style house, with a living room, dining room, kitchen, den, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is a lanai off the kitchen, perfect for breakfast and birdwatching. A small family or group of friends would be comfortable here.

The house was very clean on our arrival, with fresh sheets and plenty of towels. There are beach towels available. Leilani Satori, the site manager, is friendly and responsive to requests— we asked for closet hangers and a wire dish drain basket for the kitchen sink, which were promptly delivered. The house and garden are excellently maintained. Some things that could be improved relatively easily: the living room had only a ceiling fluorescent fixture, which is not pleasant lighting, and this could be solved with some simple floor lamps. There were no bedside tables in the main bedroom, so we moved one each from the other bedrooms, which was not a problem with only two of us staying there, but would have been with a larger party. The living room furniture [a sofa that can be a bed, and a matching chair] are singularly uncomfortable – in fact, the only comfortable chair in the place is in the attached “den” which Leilani opened for our use [it’s not normally part of the unit], as the TV in the living room was only usable for playing VHS or DVD [there is quite good WiFi, however]. This is definitely an inland house but the location is an easy drive to nearby beaches. We were hoping to get away from any sound of traffic, as much as possible. But this place is very quiet by reasonable standards, and the rumble of a truck or motorcycle is muffled even by day. Moderate traffic by day, very quiet at night, and of course an amazingly clear view of the stars at night.

We were celebrating our 40th anniversary on an island we love, and this was our third visit to Big Island. The only reason we give Doi Cottage four stars rather than five is that we prefer to be closer to open water, but even on Big Island a short drive brings you to surf and sand. The location turned out to be very practical for us, given the places we wanted to revisit.

Mahalo to the owners and managers of Doi Cottage!

Lovely house, great location, fun family memories

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this location with my family! The front yard was so perfect for the kids to run around in! Loved the spacious kitchen and the back lanai served as a place of peaceful solitude for our meals. The cement floor was a green masterpiece. The bedrooms were so comfy.

And we were so close to the the best beaches, the great fish store and other local places to shop, farmers markets. Wonderful family times!! Would love to come back.

This home was perfect for our needs!!

  • 5 of 5

We flew from the east coast to visit family who live in Kamuela. This house was a perfect fit for all our needs. I brought my mother and children so we had three generations plus the cousins in for family meals. The kitchen is spacious and easy to gather in and prepare meals. The dinning room is charming and the outside lanai area lovely for early evening outside relaxation and early morning coffee. The home also has an additional study with a TV and games so the children would play as the adults engaged in conversation in the living room. We had a wonderful stay.
