Most luxurious rustic retreat imaginable in Isla Baru
We just spent 4 fantastic nights at Playa Manglares and had the most amazing stay. Since we had 6 people (2 couples, 2 kids ages 10 & 12), we simply rented the entire "hotel" and had the run of the place to ourselves. The kids had the bottom floor, and the couples had the top two floors, letting everyone have some privacy along with the sense that we were in a "real home" with elegant yet rustic touches everywhere. The grounds have plenty of hammocks for resting, relaxing and reading. The private beach is great for swimming, shelling and even fishing. There's great wifi if you need to stay connected (or someone wants to post photos to Facebook or Instagram!). There's an honor bar with drinks and snacks, and you have full use of the refrigerator to store your own treats, or you can take cold drinks, ice and water whenever you like. By renting the entire home, it meant that lovely Olga - the most gracious, welcoming and helpful hotel owner I've ever met - and her staff catered to our whims, needs and timing. The breakfasts were beyond delicious. Lunches were restaurant-worthy experiences. Mojitos at cocktail hour were out of this world. Dinners were simple affairs that had us lingering over great conversation. Truly, we felt spoiled by the attention to detail and warmth of the entire staff. Even the dogs on premises made us feel welcome - the kids had a blast playing with them, collecting shells, swimming and climbing trees with them. Olga went out of her way to make this a magic experience for us. She even took us to the not-yet-open bird sanctuary and arranged an entire day on a private boat that took us all around Islas del Rosario. We had the most amazing lobster and crab feast on a private beach, and avoided the crowds at Playa Blanca altogether. I highly recommend staying at Playa Manglares for more than one night or two; to truly experience it and get the rhythm of the island you need several days of chilling out in this special place. Our entire family was sad to leave. It could not have been a better way to experience Isla Baru, and we can't wait to go back.
Visit the white sandy beaches of Playa Blanca, bring a picnic and spend the day (http://www.ticartagena.com/en/guides/city-guides/enjoy-cartagena%27s-best-beach-playa-blanca/) Take a boat to Islas del Rosario where you can snorkel in the clear blue water and visit the Oceanario (http://220.127.116.11/~oceanari/ceiner/) Take a tour of the National Aviary and capture images of some of Colombia's beautiful bird species (https://www.facebook.com/AviarioNacionalDeColombia/timeline)
