About St Clair McColl

Saint and Janet have owned this property since they could pitch a tent and camp on it.Janet is a teacher and Saint is a floatplane pilot. They have 3 sons, now grown men. They came as a family from Saltspring and would spend every weekend and holiday showing their kids the wild pacific. In the summer the family would spend many summer days, playing in the surf, fishing and exploring the Pacific Rim National Park. In 94 they started to build with local builder Westisle Construction and architect Bob Cunliffe. 2.5 years later they had more than they dreamed of. Simply put, they had to share this paradise with the rest of the world. They could see how the place energized them and wanted to share the experience. As you will experience for yourself Chahayis is difficult to leave, for that same reason Saint and Janet dream of retiring here someday.

St Clair McColl purchased this house in 1992

A little disappointed even though great location.

We, a couple, stayed for 4 nights over Christmas so had planned on eating most meals in. We were in the cottage of the property that also has a larger main house. Perhaps much of the kitchen dishes, glasses and other supplies had migrated over there, but I wasn't about to go ask those people celebrating Christmas if they had any cereal bowls, measuring cups or spoons or wine glasses. We went to town before the stores closed for Christmas to purchase said items.. This is our third time doing a rental like this and perhaps we were really spoiled at the first 2 places by the well supplied kitchens and our expectations are too high. There were some basic spices and we appreciated the locally roasted coffee and salsa and chip snack that was left for us. The cottage is very clean and there were plenty of nice towels. The decor is dated, but it's a cottage and in summer I don't think it would be as noticable as you would not be inside the amount of time we were with it being winter. The broken kitchen faucet that drips constantly really needs to be replaced., so annoying. The bbq would not light with the button and we did not see a bbq lighter in the cottage, only the box of matches, so much for our steak dinner. The oven door doesn't open properly and the inside glass of the oven door is broken and we were concerned the big hunks of glass could fall off into our food. That is dangerous and should be repaired. Because it is winter and it's dark at 5 pm and it was just the 2 of us, a television would have been nice. Netflix on my iPad was not ideal. We tried to play backgammon but there was only one die. Glad we brought our Bluetooth speaker for our devices that had music as cbc radio we could not get in clearly and we love the local Tofino station, but it plays such a huge variety of music that sometimes you don't like the genre of the hour. We Did enjoy the wood burning stove and the supplied wood,. The location was great and there is a little sliver of ocean view from inside. If you enjoy cooking and its part of your vacation plan bring your own pots, mixer, mixing bowls, measuring items etc. do bring laundry detergent as there was none if you needed to use them.

Owner's Response: Hi Caroline, Thank you for your comments. I sincerely apologize for the condition of the house and how it affected your stay. We have recently switched management companies and have been working out some kinks – nonetheless, the conditions you described are unacceptable. We will work hard to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We love to cook and designed the home for a family to enjoy cooking in. - We have restocked the kitchen and are working on a system of check lists to ensure this does not happen again. - The stove was damaged by the guest before you, it has now been replaced, as has the faucet. - We’ve replaced the igniter of the BBQ. - Games and matches have been replaced, including new dice for the backgammon. - Initially we intended the home to be TV free because of its distraction, we advertise as such and we will now advertise to provide one on demand. As owners of a vacation rental property we depend heavily upon a third party management company to look after our property. Therefore we truly value your input and comments. We would love to have you visit us again, to show you we can do better. Yours truly, St Clair McColl

Magical and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place to unwind and take long bike rides and walks on the beach. The cabin has everything you need and is close enough to town to get the best of both.

very cosy west coast cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay in the chahayis-cottage and the second in tofino. from the first time we loved the house. it was exactly what my husband and I wanted for our holiday. it's nearly oceanfront, just a few steps away from chesterman beach, which is beautiful in any way. the house has all you need. from comfy beds to a cozy living room with a fireplace. we really enjoyed sitting in the evening together cooking and relaxing. from the house you can easyly go on bike rides to near beaches or to tofino town. paula mason from the brimar b&b next door was always there to make sure all ist ok and gave us a lot of information about what to do in tofino. it was an excellent stay and we definitely plan to come back next year. this place ist one of the places you don't wanna leave. great people, great house, great beach. thank you for everything.

If you want true West Coast........ this is it!

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival there was no doubt I had made the right choice for my wife and two other couples stay near Tofino. This was our first stay in a "home" in Tofino as we had usually opted to stay at any one of a number of beautiful hotels/resorts in the area for our "November Storm Watching Trips" in the past. We have been coming here for 10 years every November and I think we have found our new spot of choice. As we now travel with other couples my wife and I thought we would look into a house this stay and are we glad we did......

In short Chahayis is in a prime location on Chestermans Beach at the south end. When you arrive you are treated to a "true" west coast styled home, right on Chestermans Beach, one of the premiere beaches in the area. We stayed in the Main House which is so warmly decorated you immediately feel relaxed upon entering. Then you walk further into the house and are met with stunning views through the well limbed trees of Chestermans Beach from the dining and living rooms, what more could you desire. Throughout the house the details and spaces are well conceived.

This was our base for our 3 night stay and everyone was truly satisfied with the experience. The wood stove kept the place toasty warm, the furnishing were perfect for a group of six, and the living room furniture "extremely" comfortable. The kitchen had anything and everything a cook requires to put out a wonderful meal ( the appliances may not be "gourmet" in style or quality, but the array of equipment and small appliances available is quite astonishing). The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms with heated floors hit the mark. On every level this property delivered to our requirements.

We cooked great meals here, sat and drank and gazed at the view, we had gorgeous sunshine, overcast weather - West Coast Style, listened to the crashing surf with the fire going and sliding glass doors open, and watched a storm hit the coast. Perfect. Thank-you Saint for creating this wonderful place.

If you love to walk the beaches, be close to town (probably 7 minutes away), surf, entertain, or just chill in a wonderful place shrouded in wooded, with details such as a full tree as part of the home in the entrance way......

you will love this place....

Owner's Response: Lance thank you for your review. We are glad to be able to share our house with you and appreciate your supportive words of encouragement and feedback. I can't wait to get back up there again myself for a surf and to chill out and watch the waves from the big chair. Please come again!

A lovely oceanfront stay

  • 5 of 5

A perfect place for a quiet oceanfront stay.

The beach house was great for a small group. It is relatively private, even though it's right next to the main cabin. It's literally only a few steps to the southern end of South Chesterman beach, making it perfect for surfing & strolling.

The ocean is so important to your stay. ensure you take a walk on the beach as soon as you arrive to get in the groove. Better yet, go surfing or boogie boarding, to truly feel the common denominator of us all. Or take a day and whale watch on your way to Hot-springs Cove. Or try kayaking over to Meares Island to walk among the 1000 year old cedars. Perhaps a visit to Grice Bay mud flats to see the shore birds.
