About the Property
A privately situated light-filled thatched-roof cottage with three bedrooms.
The internationally renowned museum, Kroller Müller, with its sculpture park and important collection of modern art is located just a bike ride away and features beautiful exhibitions along with ninety paintings and drawings by Van Gogh. Zutphen, a very idyllic and intact merchant town along the river IJssel, is where the clock has stopped as far as architecture is concerned but you can get a latte macchiato, a frappecino do your organic food shopping at the local market on Thursday and Saturday. By car, public transportation or on the bike this area of the Netherlands is famous for its forests, historic towns, farmland, horseback riding as well its proximity to culture and city life.
The cottage itself is set on a large parcel of land which functions as a green lung for the town. We want to preserve the area and the premises and look forward to welcoming guests who enjoy the classic ambiance of a cozy home with plenty of peace and quiet. As the manager of the property - and son of the owner - I can offer tailor-made cultural day trips or vacation plans according to your interests; whether you are drawn to contemporary culture, historic sites, or the justly famous Dutch design, craft and architecture, my wife and I look forward to recommending the best and the latest.
Our cottage offers modern amenities and some rusticity: a very comfortable kingsize bed, one bathroom with a shower, excellent heating, a flat screen tv and wifi of course. There is no dishwasher but the kitchen sink offers a lovely view of the woods which makes washing dishes a pleasure!

Starting in 1934, the Shepherd's Cottage was the summer retreat of our grandparents and has been a part of our family's summers ever since. In 1954, our grandparents redesigned the cottage to accommodate year-round living. A retired physician, our grandfather started a rural practice and our grandmother was active in the community, the house remains a historic place in Loenen.
The cottage is situated on 2+ acres surrounded by trees and a small stream and straight across from the farm road into the fields.
Early morning walks passing the horses and Icelandic Ponies when the sun comes up is just magical.
The patio at the house has catches the sun most of the day and into the evenings. In summer it is daylight well into the evening and you will be able to enjoy outdoor dining, sipping a glass of wine or playing in the garden until 11pm. Always bring layered clothing since the evenings are cool. A great mild climate all year round, there is no necessity for air-conditioning in the Netherlands, summer nights are perfectly pleasant..
The world famous museum Kroller-Muller is within a half hour by car or an hour on the bike.
Van Gogh paintings and a great outdoor sculpture collection are just some of the attractions. <www.treks.org/06hub_huntinglodge.htm>
The Hubertus Slot is built by Berlage and is a national architectural treasure open to the public. Also in the Park Hoge Veluwe is the first underground museum called Museonder ("Museunder")
Fascinating for children and adults alike.
There is a wonderful swimming pool very close by,
In the Netherlands the job of shepherd was reinstated and walking around the woods and moors, you are likely to meet a herd of sheep with the dogs and shepherd doing their work.
A totally different experience can be had by WW2 history buffs visiting Arnhem. There are many WW2 sites to visit. Meanwhile Arnhem is a very sophisticated city 20 minutes by car from Loenen for museums, dining, theaters and movie theaters. It is the home of some great higher cultural education institutions and plays host to one go the best Fashion shows, Theater, Dance and Fine Art. this all makes for a city with young people, cafe's and great shopping in little boutiques.
Loenen is centrally located to visit both Holland and Germany and Belgium.
By car it is just under one hour or to Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Brussels, Cologne and frankfort are within the 3 hour range and Paris is a mere 5 hours by car. Of course all these places can be visited by train. Loenen can function as a base for a larger European trip.
It is a wonderful place for optimally 2-4 people of any age, with plenty to do for every-one.
Year Purchased: 1934
About the owner: Our grandfather was a doctor in the small city of Bloemendaal and enjoyed traveling to the rural regions of the Netherlands with his young family for summer vacations. Our father's youthful summers were spent in the cottage and during the war years from 1940-45 he and his friends would ride their bicycles from the city of Deventer to the secluded village of Loenen because food was still plentiful on the farms surrounding the cottage. 1954, the old cottage was razed and a simple, sturdy house was built on the foundations of the old. Our grandmother lived there when we were small children and we would venture out into the fields and woods that seemed to stretch on to infinity. The house is my memory of home in the Netherlands from my youth and it is a pleasure to take care of it. It is not only a good memory but a very special place in the modern world with it's fast pace; this cottage carries the good of the old which is so necessary in the present, a place to retreat to with privacy and the possibility to reconnect with daily life in the city immediately. As a economist and art dealer, I enjoy the peace and quiet and opportunity to connect with people who will enjoy this cottage as much as I do.
Why the Owner Chose Bosgebied Loenen, Loenen, Netherlands:
For dreamers and lovers of nature, for partners or families, the Shepherd's Cottage is an idyllic retreat to the 'hissing of summer lawns' and the cool shade of tall trees. The cottage is a unique little building with the original thatched food, a collection of eclectic heirlooms and other pieces of antique furniture; no Ikea furniture to be found anywhere. The 2+ acres are in town but the house is enveloped in the greenery and protected and private. Looking out over the meadow in the back of the house with the trees surrounding the land bordered by a little stream, it is an adventure for kids and one does not have to leave the premises to have a great day. There are plenty of spots to put your chair and read a book or your Kindle (wifi available of course), there are bikes in the shed, although for longer trips it is recommended to rent a good bike in town.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The cottage is a short walk to the requisite amenities but far removed from the hurly-burly of daily life.
