In the Bedroom, a charming, wrought iron, Queen-size frame holds a Sealy Pillowtop mattress, quality sheets, soft & medium/soft pillows, blankets, and bedding. The art for this room was selected to evoke a calm & peaceful ambiance. An east-facing window brings in the morning light at just the right time. A romantic chandelier w/dimmer switch compliments the space.

Outside the residence of Hillcrest Hideaway, it's surprisingly private, for being in the midst of town. Tall, old growth hedges provide a wind barrier and a sense of being in a little world of its own. A west-facing deck with chairs provided allows you to soak in the afternoon sun, view the ocean, feel the breeze, and relax. On winder days, move the chairs to the protected front courtyard area. A propane Weber 'Q' 1000 grill will be ready for your needs. There's a few herbs and a lemon tree too.

Down the block is the Gold Beach Pioneer Cemetery, or 'God's Acre' as it was once called, next to the historical Presbyterian Church. There is a self-guided walking tour book available at Hillcrest Hideaway for any history buffs interested in taking a stroll thru time to learn about the trials & tribulations of hardy folks who first settled the area.

Non-smokers only please. Owned and operated by LOCALS whose knowledge of the area can enhance your visit and stay. Patti Joyce, your Manager, lives nearby. WARNING: Visiting Oregon's South Coast can become an addiction!

Touted as the 'Siskiyou Coast', One Million Acres encompass: Five Wild & Scenic Rivers, Three Wilderness Areas, 80 miles of World-Class Spectacular Coastline & Beaches, Offshore Wildlife Refuges, Botanical Preserves. It's a special, special place. Look for the article in Guest Book entitled 'Paradise Found' that highlights its many unique features.

HIKING: This is a Hiker's 'Mecca'.

The Oregon Coast Trail takes you to secluded beaches, rugged coastline, and breathtaking vistas. Accesses are from numerous trail heads along Highway 101. The Siskiyou National Forest is the most diverse and intact temperate forest ecosystem in North America with a wide range of designated trails ranging from easy to difficult. Information on some favorite hikes is in the Guest Book.

BEACHCOMBING: Miles of pristine, sandy beaches to meander, north & south, often with loads of driftwood and other treasures.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Speaks for itself, stunning grandeur & wildlife in every direction.

ROGUE RIVER JET BOAT TOURS: May - October. Jerry's Rogue Jets, an exhilarating and memorable excursion.

BIRDWATCHING: Over 300 identified species of birds have been identified in this area.

DECEMBER-MARCH: Winter Steelehead travel up the Rogue this time of year. Good eating and great fighters!

MARCH-JUNE: Spring chinook (or king) salmon are caught between Gold Beach and Agness (2 to 35 miles upriver). Similar to fall chinook, these 'springers' are in peak physical condition as they leave the cold waters of the Pacific and come into the Rogue system in search of their spawning grounds. Known for their mouth-watering flavor, spring chinook range in size from 10 to 40+ pounds.

JULY-DECEMBER: Troll (fisherman talk for putting around in a boat with a line or two out) the Rogue River Bay for Chinook salmon which, once hooked, give even the most experienced angler a challenging fight. These fine fish also range from 10-40+ pounds. Summer Steelhead (or half-pounders) also provide excellent fishing during these months.

SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER: Coho (silver) salmon and, of course, the fun-to-hook summer/fall Steelies. Silvers range in size from five to 15 pounds and Steelhead from 3/4 pound to two pounds. Nothing is more fun than fighting these fish on light tackle, especially a fly rod. Fishermen are encouraged to catch and release these beauties, allowing them to live and reproduce, ensuring future runs.

WHALE WATCHING: From Hillcrest Hideaway, binoculars are supplied. Also, keep glancing out to sea every time you’re on a bluff hiking, biking, walking. Chances are you’ll eventually spot a plume of water spouting from a blowhole.

~The California gray whale's 12,000-mile migratory route is between December and May. Till February they’re heading south as far as the Arctic, and tend to travel 2 miles offshore; from March through May they’re on their way back north, and cruise closer in, just beyond the surf line. The rest of the year you might catch sight of one of the 'locals' , juvenile male whales that have taken up permanent residence off the Oregon coast.

In summary, all the seasons and cycles of Oregon's South Coast spawn opportunities for discovery and recreation--uncrowded Paradise. Gold Beach is not for everyone, yet that is the beauty of it

About Contact Manager Patti Joyce

PATTI JOYCE is manager for Hillcrest Hideaway.

The Owner, Stephan, grew up in Southern California and first visited Gold Beach as a young man with a group of friends. The Southern Oregon Coast attraction was immediate and everlasting. He acquired this small property and has enjoyed using it as a 'base camp' over the decades, making improvements along the way. His reforestation career has taken him all over the Pacific Northwest, but this remains 'home' on occasion. You will find evidence of his journeys on display with an eclectic array of art and collectibles as well as a touch of his romantic-side & 'inner-child' thus reflected in a few fun elements too. Today, Stephan's work continues to demand travel and long periods away, accompanied by his canine companion, Dobie, so he decided to share his Hillcrest Hideaway with others.

Contact Manager Patti Joyce purchased this bungalow in 1984

Why Contact Manager Patti Joyce chose Gold Beach

Stephan was smitten with the South Coast, and found an affordable foot-hold here. Through the years, he's turned his bungalow into a casual, charming & comfortable abode. HILLCREST HIDEAWAY is in a CONVENIENT LOCATION. COMFORTABLE & AFFORDABLE. It's a welcome retreat in a small town, with a slower pace, a simpler lifestyle--a quiet escape to relax, away from the hectic pace. SURROUNDED BY AN AREA OF UNSURPASSED GRANDEUR & WONDER that you can explore for a lifetime.

What makes this bungalow unique

Anything you need during your stay is only moments away, an easy walk or short drive. Gold Beach is your central location for day trips south to the California Redwoods or north to Bandon and Port Orford. Back at Hillcrest Hideaway 'base camp' you can watch the moon set over the ocean on the right nights at the right time as well as take in the daily show at sunset. There's a large ocean-facing oak desk, ideal for lap top or writing tasks while being distracted by the view. The kitchen has east-facing windows, bright & cheerful, and the back west-facing deck can be sunny all afternoon. A wood-burning insert stove takes the chill off those rainy months. There's delightful, soothing, interesting array of things all around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Been vacationing at Gold Beach for past 9 years. Has been difficult to find an affordable pet friendly place but this year found the Hillcrest Hideaway home & was super surprised. The home was beautifully decorated, so clean & well maintained. It was so well stocked for humans & pets. I hope it will be available next year too!

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the hideaway! The home was well furnished and very comfortable. The space was great, with a kitchen, dining space, living room with big windows facing the ocean, tv room and bedroom. Extra touches, like the muffins and fresh flowers upon arrival and the growlers for use at the local brewery were very nice. We appreciated the spices available for cooking and nice cookware. Thanks!
