The property was a little hard to find but totally worth it. It was great to unplug and unwind.
Thank you for your stay, Christopher! We recommend to our guests to arrive in the daylight and to bring our detailed directions to ensure finding the house with ease. Arriving at night for the first time can be a bit of a challenge, so sorry about that! Glad you were able to unwind and we hope to see you back anytime :)
Remote and Peaceful
Rain, Rain go away
anyway we enjoyed our stay
and will return another day.
Location was a bit more remote than we thought but was quite enjoyable, very peaceful and quite. It stormed most of the time, one night heavy wind that blew down limbs and tree across the road as we returned late on night, one said it reminded them of a spooky movie with the trees covering the roadway. Then to our amazement two bear cubs ran across the road in front of us and climbed a tree, lots of wildlife, deer in the yard a couple times. Fire place was much appreciated when we got there, Oscar was kind enough to go by before we got there and had the place warmed up. A great place, clean and plenty of amenities to start up with. Will return in better weather.

Remote, Beautiful, Perfect Retreat
Our experience was Fantastic!
We enjoyed the sound of the river, the seclusion, the Home away From Home.
The beds seemed to have clean sheets, and the dishes washed. But the grill was filthy, the handles on every cupboard was dirty. There were ants in 1 of the beds, the floor looked like it hadnt been mopped in forever, and there was animal hair all over the floor, carpet and on the sofa. BUT...We cleaned it all up, and our stay was phenomenal!!!!!
We apologize that you found our home to be this dirty, we would have been equally upset had we arrived to such a scenario. You did receive an in-person welcome and Meet-and-Greet at your early arrival (that we personally granted to you), which these items you listed could have been addressed then. Direct communication with the Caretaker/Owner is available at all times 24/7, which he would have graciously attended to, as I question why you would not have. I contacted our cleaning crew, and I showed them your review that you publicly left on our page (rather than messaging us privately). They mentioned specific tasks that they take into extreme consideration, always clean sheets and all bedding and linens, all surfaces sanitized including kitchen handles, flooring vacuumed and mopped, living room furniture sanitized and vacuumed including the new sofa that we are very particular about keeping immaculate. The new grill was mentioned by the owner that he put into special attention, scraping the inside grill and giving it an extra shine (with a special stainless steel cleaning product) on the outside. Because we are pet friendly, we charge a $50. one time fee for deep pet cleaning. Our cleaning process goes through a 3-phase system: after the house is entirely cleaned and beds made, the crew double backs visually and through their checklist to find anything skipped over or finding something new to address. In phase 3, one or both owners give the house a final "white glove" walk through and give the house a special-touch detail. We take pride in leaving the house to our guests immaculately clean, 5 star level clean, so not only does this upset us, it is confusing that we are there on-site at the 2nd and 3rd stage, and there with you at the Meet-and-Greet and no communication about this during your stay so that we can correct anything overlooked. This complaint makes me curious. We did notice additional guests aside from the 6 booked, and a pet bowl was left in the kitchen floor, but you did not mention extra guests or pets on the booking quote.
Come to get unplugged!
What a neat place! The house, the view, the scenery, the weather- it's the whole package! There is so much attention to detail and charm you immediately forget about all your worries and know you are somewhere special. Fully loaded with GREAT movies, an EXCELLENT variety of board games and an AMAZING book selection, you will have no problem finding a little something for everyone. We found there to be all the dishes, bake ware, seasonings and amenities we needed for our party of six for four days too. Plenty of everything!... including hot water. (Come on, we all know that can be a scary situation especially with large families) The beds are fluffy. The blankets, the pillows and the towels are all soft and fresh. You will feel right at home. Not far from your location are beautiful hikes and a deep swimming hole. Not your thing? Just sit on the porch swing and dive into a good book. Oscar and Kat are very nice and accommodating as well. Oscar even offered to do a load of laundry for me and always checked in to see if we needed anything from town before he went.
Things to keep in mind: The location is very secluded. Once you are there, you will not want to leave! Stay! Unwind! Relax! (If you are going into town you probably will want to make a day of it. (Town is 30-40 minutes drive, depending on how fast you drive on the windy road) Next, the home is completely off the grid. You need to be conservative with your energy. The home is solar and generator fueled (if I am correct). From time to time I did have to go and start the generator. (Which doesn't bother me one bit.) Oscar kept it full of fuel at all times and it starts with a push of a button- easy peezy. Lastly, the internet is spotty. It's juuust enough to not feel completely isolated. You can check your emails from time to time and stay in touch with people resourcefully if need be, but it's spotty enough you say " forget it!" and just set down the device, and THAT'S A GOOD THING :)
Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this property.
The location of the property was beautiful;lush woods, the babbling Chetko river, & the cool mountain breezes. On the 2nd night & during our 8 day stay, we were plagued by rodents. The mice regularly left feces on our supplies & ate their way in to our breads & food. When walking on the floor we had to keep shoes on as the droppings would squish between our toes. We immediately contacted Oscar & he was quick to provide mouse traps. However, he refused to take ownership of the issue. Instead, he blamed the issue on the past guests & passively implied that we may have allowed the family of mice in to the home when traveling in & out of the door. Another major issue was the propane leak (located near the 2nd bathroom). We contacted Oscar & he was unable to fix the problem. We were concerned about breathing in the gas but he dismissed our concerns, slid open the thin bathroom window, & told us to keep it open indefinitely. Less hazardous issues were the sputtering faucets & toilets. Another major issue was an infestation of gnats. Thous&s of Gnats filed in through holes in screens & prevented us from eating uninterrupted; often times we found them on top of our meals. We underst& that the home is “off the grid” but the description of the home proudly advertises a contemporary home “with all of the comforts of home”. Although Oscar did supply us with mouse traps, taped up the many holes found in the screens, & apologized for all of the inconveniences, we wish that he would have taken ownership of the problems. Instead, he blamed previous guests, our group, & the unpredictability of the gnats breeding season. While at the home, we requested a partial refund for the food that was destroyed & sleepless nights. Oscar accused us of bringing in the dead mice & feces as props to get a discount. Oscar offered only $50 for food eaten by the mice; which as of Aug. 17, we have yet to receive. We had to file a formal complaint with the VRBO to get Oscar to refund our deposit. It’s important to state that our group understood that when staying in the woods we could encounter wildlife & insects. There was a major gnat swarm which Oscar could neither predict nor control. However, this swarm would have been a non-event had the screens & windows been in proper working order. It's always easy to be friendly & attentive when everything goes accordingly, & then receive high ratings. The true test of a person’s character will always appear during difficult times.
At the time of inquiry, he asked for $1,000. off, a clear sign. But we worked with him, gave him a night for free, and after countless emails and messages the nightmare began. Barsin is a deceiver, taking full advantage from the moment of their arrival. Clearly, being threatened that we refund his complete 8 night stay or he publishes a bad review is extortion, and it became apparent that those were his intentions. A good question to all who read his review is this: if it was truly the way he states, why did they stay all 8 nights? Why did they not leave? Our home is as it states, clean, meticulous, all new furnishings & appliances, & most importantly, IT IS NOT MOUSE RIDDEN, not one in over one year since we purchased the home. Strange coincident that someone from the start could not have his way, so out comes an undeniable weapon ‘oo’ or so he thinks, not with us. Every word on his review are lies. There are seasonal mosquitoes & gnats. They will enter the house if you keep doors & windows open. Our screens are all fine, with a few small holes total of 5 out of 32 and no bigger then a pea, and are in proper working order. His deposit was refunded after careful scrutiny. You’ve got to wonder, how is one review so far fetched compared to all the others. Everyone who has stayed here has appreciated our care & love that we put into the home. Equally we put love & total respect towards our guests and their needs during their stay. He wanted a free vacation, (so don't we all). But because of his insulting antics and his persistent abuse, we are not fearing his antics nor rewarding his threats. If ever there is anything that goes wrong, we are there to help, happily, never blaming, as all we want is to ensure that our guests are enjoying their stay comfortably, & if something isn't working, or have a question or concern, Oscar is awesome about working out the solution, with care. Sure, living off-grid can at times be a test, but we have it down, & we love that our guests always have a wonderful experience. Lastly to future guests, feel free to contact us for references. During the event of "Barsin." we were very concerned about what happened, and since he left, there has not been a single citing of mice or feces of any kind, nor his energy as we cleansed the house with burning sage ;) Travelers are all thrilled to be here. Just ask them.
This year's summer vacation was spent at the Bluff House @ Chetco River. Our clan was comprised of a family of 4 plus a friend and Grandmother (of course!) . Age ranges were between 18 and 82! This house was pleasing to everyone. It was so incredibly peaceful that even now, 2 months later, I'm still wishing I were there. The house is very uniquely decorated and very comfortable. The beds, all 5 of them, were very comfortable and the linens fresh, with a big supply of towels and washcloths set up for each room. No one complained of sore backs or stiffness (Yay!) We slept so well.
There was a huge variety of wonderful books, games and DVD's for us to use. The view of the river was outstanding as we spend a lot of time on the porch watching the water flow by and ridding ourselves of any stress. I can honestly say that this was one of the most relaxing places I've vacationed at and would love to return. We brought our Kayaks to play in the water (they have 2 rentals there as well) and after navigating the rocky beach, found relief from the heat in the river. There's a nice trail hugging the mountainside that is easiest to get to some shallow water to splash in. Bring your river shoes! Lots of big rocks and some slippery ones too. Something to mention: As this is an "off grid" house, you need to keep in mind that the energy you use can't be more than what is stored in the batteries. Well, actually you can but you'll need to expect to start up the generator for an hour or so to replenish the batteries when they are low. Easy as waking up in the morning, stepping outside, turning a key and pressing a button on the generator. No big deal, to be expected really for an off grid house. This was something that grandma wasn't used to so we had to educate her about solar power and some of its limitations and remind her that all is well and a backup power source is at the ready!
There are some steeps steps to the upstairs bedroom to be mindful of. Also of note, for dining purposes, there is not a large table for everyone to sit at. We mostly sat on the porch and some people in the living room for meals. Not what we were expecting, but all worked out fine because we wanted to enjoy the view anyway. Oscar and Kat were wonderful hosts and live close by to help you out if you need something. Just "ring the bell" :)
Helpful hint: Print out the driving instructions, they're very detailed. Long drive in from the main highway, bumpy in spots but a beautiful drive.
