Very Quite and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this quite peaceful ranch. Gary was very hospitable and accommodating. Its an easy drive to Durango and even easier to Bayfield. Lake Vallecito was also close and very beautiful. There were several roads and plenty of land to explore during our morning walks. We would absolutely recommend this rental to friends and family. Thank you Gary for letting us stay at your beautiful ranch.

Great location, and great host!

  • 5 of 5

In between Durango and Pagosa, so able to visit both. Gary was great. The barn loft was just right for my husband, son and I.

Beautiful property, cozy loft

  • 4 of 5

We spent the majority of our Colorado honeymoon at the Coal Basin Cattle Company property, and loved it. We never met Lauretta, but during a brief encounter with Gary, he was friendly and quick to offer us advice for staying warm in the loft and access to firewood in the barn.

An instruction sheet was left in the loft with helpful tips and reminders. Much appreciated! We loved the private access to the hot tub, and enjoyed breakfast outside on the patio one morning. The bedroom window faces a field and the wooded back part of the property, so we often slept with the blinds up and woke up to beautiful mountain sunrise views - one day we even spotted a deer and some turkeys.

The kitchen comes equipped with pots, pans, and dishes for cooking/baking, as well as some non-perishables in the fridge and pantry. I would recommend getting your supplies from the City Market in Durango before settling in, as it is about a 30 minute drive to town (there is also a grocery about 15-20 minutes away in Bayfield, if you are coming from/headed that direction).

One thing that I wish was more apparent on the site description: there is a wood stove, and that is your only source of heat. Coming from a large Texas city, this was a new concept to us and we endured a freezing first night before getting the hang of the stove. After a day or two we found out the bed has a heated mattress topper, however, I think it might not be working anymore. Maybe we're just wimps ;).

Overall, we adored this place. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Perfect County Quiet Get-Away - Close to Durango and Pagosa Springs

  • 5 of 5

We stayed over Thanksgiving weekend and it was perfect. Our daughter loved the horse, Dakota, and running around with our dog who stayed there with us. The kitchen was so well equipped that I was able to cook our entire Thanksgiving dinner without any issues. The wood burning pot-belly fireplace was the perfect touch to this private country get-away. And I might add, that the hot-tub under the starry sky was unbelievable.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Gary and Lauretta's barn loft for our September birthdays, which was the perfect size for just the wife and I and our two dogs. Yes, there was horses and cattle (and their dogs and a cat), and no, there was no awful smell. We also specifically wanted a place with a hot tub, and theirs was clean and in perfect working order. The loft itself was clean, had everything we needed, and had great views. Gary and Lauretta were very friendly when they came around to tend to their barn and livestock tasks, and in no way did that ever feel like any kind of intrusion.

Their barn has a peaceful, remote feel, but is still in a good enough location to drive into Durango for dinner or other activities in the area (such as the Durango-Silverton train).

Overall a great place to stay and highly recommended. Thanks from the both of us.

Beautiful stay in a magical barn!

  • 5 of 5

This place was even better than the pictures indicate. It was spotless and better equipped than my home. Everything you need is provided, and if anything is missing, you only need to ask. The bed is comfortable and the shower is great. We loved looking at the stars from the hot tub, which is extremely easy to operate. We saw deer and wild turkeys, and loved playing with Gracy the cat and the dogs Rock and Spooky. We greeted Dakota the horse each morning. While there are stairs, they're easy to navigate and though there's no air conditioner, open windows provide a wonderful breeze. It is in the middle of nowhere, yet strangely convenient to both Bayfield and Durango. We have stayed in dozens of VRBO rentals across the U S and Canada, and this is one of the best. We enjoyed meeting Gary and always felt secure knowing the owners were just up the hill. I can't wait to return, hopefully next September to see the fall foliage. I can't give enough praise for the "barn." I can think of nothing negative to say about it. This is a special place owned by special people.
