About Petra Carter
A past which included running luxury tented safari camps in the wilds of Tanzania, training as a chef and working as a food-writer/photographer in Dublin Ireland as well as finishing a degree in Fine Art.. I eventually wound up in Uzes - where I run Cooking School 'Le Pistou' in the heart of this Medieval town.
Petra Carter purchased this Apartment in 2012
Why Petra Carter chose Uzès
The extraordinary location of the apartment.. its luxurious spaciousness and brightness.. its high ceilings with softly filtered light.. the charm of its ancient history.. All this instantly made me want to create a graceful but relaxed space that I could enjoy and share with others as a home away from home in this beautiful Provencal town with ancient Roman roots..
What makes this Apartment unique
The pretty, dappled shade of the square's plane trees and the colonial ceiling fans guarantee coolness and comfort even when summer is at his hottest. And a super efficient heating system ensures a snug and comfortable winter. Both bedrooms overlook a quiet courtyard with a spectacular view of St Etienne church while in the front lounge the activity in the square will keep you entertained. The square is closed to motorized traffic, creating ample room for restaurants' tables and chairs where people can enjoy a glass of something. In the summer, at lunchtime, sometimes musicians come to play, so while you lean over the apartment's window rail you can pretend that these impromptu serenades are just for you!

Wonderful week.
Wonderful week in this beautiful apartment. Uzes is a joy. Petra is a super host.
Thanks Martin, for the write-up. Enjoy your few days more in Provence! And by the way, VRBO takes care of the return of the deposit, which you should receive in the next few days. Thanks again for leaving the apartment in a perfect state!
Comfortable, extremely tastefully decorated and in the best location in Uzès
One week, two couples in the height of the summer season in Uzès. We had a tremendous stay in Petra's delightful apartment. It's decorated beautifully, with lovely artworks on the walls, comfortable beds and classic French styling with homely touches. The kitchen all though we didn't use it to its full potential is superbly fitted out, and has everytjing you need and more to cook up a feast or spread out your market purchases for casual nibbles overlooking the central square in the town. There is something to be said about walking down the central staircase and through the wooden doors to emerge right into the pulse of this beautiful town. The location is magnificent. In saying that because of where you are it can get a little noisey late at night or early in the mornings as the local restaurants prepare in the early hours and you can here the services and deliveries in the square, but in saying that the rest of the charm of this flat and lication seriously overcompensate for this minor inconvenience. Petra as a host is wonderful, easy to communicate with leading up to your booking and even more delightful in person passing on her tips of where to visit and places to eat. We missed her cooking school but next time will make up for that. Arriving later than expected and after the restaurants were closing Petra arranged for cold meats and cheeses and wine for us in the apartment which she went out of her way to do and which was very much appreciated after a long flight and drive to reach Uzès. Top notch apartment with a fabulous friendly and professional owner.

Wonderful apartment
Apartment Place aux Herbes is a wonderful place to stay in a beautiful town.
There is also the most charming hostess who will attend to all your needs and make you most welcome.
Ahhh, you wonderful people - I miss you already! Thank you for leaving the apartment in such super condition!!
A comfortable, stylishly-decorated, and coveniently located apartment.
We would love to stay here again!
Thank you Mary and Tomas, for being such lovely guests!
A lovely apartment perfect for 2 couples.
We stayed several places on our trip to France, but this was by far our favorite. It is a lovely, comfortable apartment loaded with personality. It is situated ideally on the main square in Uzes, so you can feel very much a part of the vitality of the activity even in the apartment. The markets and restaurants are mere steps away. Petra is the wonderful owner and I appreciated her always responding so quickly by email when we were making any arrangements.
I would highly recommend this delightful property for a fabulous visit to this wonderful town.
I assume this is from you Ali - and if so thank you so much for this nice write-up. I'm so happy you were happy. And thank you for leaving the apartment so clean and tidy.
I loved the flowers you left!
Very best wishes,
Petra
Excellent Location and Facilities in the Heart of Uzes, Provence
This apartment was very well appointed, spacious, modern and comfortable. It was in the centre of the famous main square in the beautiful, historic town of Uzes. The views from our windows were enchanting, with the markets set up in the square on various days during the week. Numerous restaurants, shops, attractions and amenities were only a stroll away. The owner was very helpful and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and would certainly recommend this accommodation.

Allow yourself to be seduced by the charm of Uzes - a beautifully preserved Medieval market town on the edge of Provence which has won the 'best market in the Languedoc' award in 2018.. The town has also been awarded a Michelin Green Guide award in 2018 - one of only 3 towns in the whole of France! And if that isn't enough - La Fougasse, a little bakery at 2 minutes walk from the apartment, was awarded "Best Baker in France" in 2018.
The town has attracted traders and visitors since Roman times and today its winding cobbled streets and hidden squares play host to a multitude of pretty shops (with clothes, home-decoration, pottery and jewellery well represented), restaurants, art galleries and ateliers as well as secret gardens and historical gems - all in the comfort of dappled shade of its ubiquitous plane trees and Medieval arches..
There is no need for a car in Uzes as everything can be reached on foot - including its well-known twice-weekly food markets, a wide-ranging choice of restaurants, pretty shops, cooking courses at Le Pistou, beautiful walks in the stunning Eure valley, public tennis courts, an open-air public swimming pool, a weekly flea market on Sunday etc.. right through to banks (13), postal services, grocery stores, butchers, hairdressers, (35), doctors and pharmacies.. And there are several daily buses from Uzes to and from Avignon and Nimes at the very reasonable price of €2
However, renting a car has its benefits as you can explore further afield. Its immediate surroundings offer attractions to suit all ages and tastes ranging from the famous Roman aqueduct Le Pont du Gard, the pottery village of St Quentin, wineries (all open their doors for wine tastings), the equestrian centre of the Haras just outside Uzes, and many more...
Within 5 minutes walk from the apartment you can be in the wild garrigue: imagine picnicking and walking along the beautiful Eure river.. Outdoor activities within a few minutes of Uzes include horse-riding, kayaking on the local river Gardon and bike hire. Uzès is also known for its summer dance & classical music programs and the traditional Fete Votive is celebrated with bull-running through the streets.
Many of the surrounding villages are worth a visit and Uzes is only an hour away from Mediterranean beaches, the Medieval city of Aigues Mortes and the Camargue with its rich birdlife, salt pans and wild horses. In the opposite direction are the spectacular gorges and plateaux of the Cevennes and the Ardeche. The historical cities of Nimes and Avignon are within 20 and 30 minutes respectively while vibrant and bohemian Arles is about 50 minutes from Uzès.
Uzes is easily accessible by air (Nimes, Montpellier & Marseille) & train (Avignon and Nimes TGV/Eurostar). Or by car via the A9 (exit 23 Remoulins).
