About John Eberly
We are brothers, John and Sam Eberly. We're third generation caretakers of this wonderful house and are committed to sharing it with others. We both grew up in this home, and we helped our parents stay here for many years. Now we're keeping it in the family for our kids and grandchildren. Part of this effort includes some limited summer rentals to defray costs and share the property with others.
John Eberly purchased this House in 1950
Why John Eberly chose Holton
This home was originally built by our uncle Jack, an industrialist and president of one of the "arsenal of democracy" manufacturing firms that carried the weight of WWII production in Muskegon. Our grandfather hand built the garage storage cupboards that still hold our tools and fishing tackle. There was originally a large maple tree coming up through the laundry room, and a larger pine tree growing through the back deck! Jack and his socialite wife Bessie entertained here in the 1950's and 60's until the original cottage burned down in the early seventies. Bessie re-built the home and lived out her life here. Our parents inherited the house and made it their home until Dad's passing in 2013. After all of these years, the house has witnessed so much of our lives that it's unthinkable to part with it. We have so many kids and grandkids that no single family can fairly lay claim to the house, so we've chosen to use it as a rental. This way, we keep the house available for an annual reunion and help finance its upkeep. This helps with family expenses and keeps the house full of happy guests - just what Bessie and Dad did for all of the years that they lived there!
What makes this House unique
The house, it's location on the lake, and the lake scenery combine to create a wonderful environment for rest - and restoration - of our guests. The lake is by turns stimulating with busy traffic and unbelievably quiet and calm late at night. Blue Lake supports all water sports - powered or not - and has great fishing. A large portion of the shoreline is occupied by scout and YMCA camps, leaving the shore wooded and unmolested across from the house. You may see canoes and sailboats in the daytime and hear camp songs at night! We pride ourselves on providing an "all-inclusive" experience with a well appointed kitchen, full complement of towels and linens, and everything kept in good repair. We have a rowboat and kayak included for no extra charge, and there are plenty of fishing poles to go around. We'll have coffee and bacon, eggs, and cereal for your first days breakfast. And there's wood for the fire pit so you can make memories with your family as the sun sets.

Big Blue Lake Property
The setting of this property is not to be beat! The lake full of fish just hopping onto the hook was lots of fun for fisherman of all ages. The calm shallow lake by the property was perfect for first time kayakers-old and young alike. The house was plenty big for all of us. But repairs and updating need to be done. Pots and pans need to be replaced. Air mattresses need to be replaced. The fan was broken and barely able to be used safely. Although there is an air conditioner in one room, I don’t think you can actually say it was an air conditioned property. We had a cooler week but had it been hot it could have been uncomfortable. All things together it was a pleasant cabin experience, but much more could be done to make the stay perfect!
Peaceful spot on the lake
Very pleased with this cottage. Well stocked kitchen, nice bathrooms, washer and dryer, kayaks and rowboat a great place to relax and make family memories
We had a wonderful stay!
7 days of fishing and not one of my four kids asked where the tv was. The house was stocked and clean. The sunsets near the campfires were my favorite time.
Peaceful spot, not far from town
A nice spot for our group of 6.
The house had everything we needed (although it took forever to find the wine opener).
This was my first time using the HomeAway app. The check in instructions lacked detail and my messages leading up to the stay didn't get a response. Once I called, the owner took care of everything.
I'd stay here again without question.
Great Family Retreat!
We had some issues when we arrived. Our Host was timely and responsive in resolving these issues. Nice amenities, great sunset and fishing. We really enjoyed our stay.
Big Blue Lake never disappoints!!!
Another great stay!
Located within a national forest, the setting is rural lakefront with shopping and dining within a 15 minute drive in either Whitehall/Montague or Fremont. Amusement park, water park, and Lake Michigan are within a 20 minute drive.
Local camps include Gerber and Owasippe scouting facilities, Pendalouan YMCA, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and others - the house makes a great spot for parents to stay, close to the kids at camp.
Golf, river canoeing, big lake charter fishing, cycling, mountain biking, and beachgoing are just some of the activities nearby - if you aren't entranced by the lake view and restful atmosphere of the cottage!
