Beautiful waterfront property but...

  • 3 of 5

If you like semi-rustic, this place is for you. The view and the ocean front is superb but...

- The house needs a thorough cleaning. There are spider webs everywhere and spiders to go with them. We captured spiders in the kitchen sink, bathtub, bathroom sink and saw one furry black one scurry under the kitchen cabinets. There are tiny little flies that fly in the lights at night and which we find dead all over the counter tops in the kitchen in the morning.

There was dog/cat (?) hair on all the couches and balls of hair (?) on the steps leading upstairs. The refrigerator leaks water (clogged drain?) so don't put anything on the shelves except the top one.

- It is not private. You can hear (and see) the next door neighbor's (on both sides) entire conversations and their dogs barking and screen doors slamming.

- The best thing about the house was the caretaker Bob, who helped us when we had questions and also showed us how to work various things in the house such as the fireplace and stove. He was also just an all around great person and we enjoyed talking to him.

- And we cannot complain about the view and the front porch which reminded us of why we came to Maine in the first place!

- I gave the review three stars because after all the house is in Maine.

Spectacular Views!

Driftwood is a a great location for families. Curious children can explore the the sea rocks right on the property that provide entertainment for hours. We enjoyed the privacy of this classic Maine cottage while only being minutes from Boothbay Harbor. Our family had a relaxing stay and will miss the view and sounds of the water beneath us.

Location, location, location!

  • 4 of 5

Driftwood IS a classic cottage. A bit on the funky side, but charming. Being RIGHT on the water, so you can hear the rhythm of the tide coming in and going out, is just lovely, as are the views and the proximity to All Saints By the Sea, which I love to attend when I'm in BBH. We will definitely rent again.

A few suggestions to make it even more delightful (with these things addressed, I'd definitely give it an "excellent" rating):

- Needs new fridge -- during our stay, it leaked badly and we had to call Bob. And it just looks old.

- Replace the double mattress in the "blue" room (the one towards the back of house) with a queen -- because two people just don't sleep in doubles anymore, which effectively renders the bedrooms with double beds rooms for one person (unless you have small children). The mattress in the blue room also squeaks badly -- so if you don't go for a queen, at least replace that mattress. My younger sister & her husband tried to sleep together in that bed, and it squeaked so much (just from normal tossing and turning!) that he ended up sleeping in the bunk room downstairs.

- The sink and bathtub in the bathroom were draining VERY slowly. I told Bob M about it.

- I missed being able to build a fire -- and that stone fireplace looked so lovely. If it's truly a matter of the chimney needing to be repaired (versus an insurance issue), I hope you'll get it fixed. A classic Maine cottage needs a working fireplace for cool foggy nights!

And this isn't a suggestion, just an observation: having just one bathroom with a shower might not make this an ideal rental for a family with teenagers (which we don't have anymore, so we were fine). If you could expand the downstairs bathroom to accommodate a shower stall, that would ease the morning traffic jam in the bathroom!

Cheers, Jane

Beautiful sunsets and sunrises. A true Maine cottage. 8 of us stayed there and so enjoyed the screened porch and dinners around the table. Would go back again.

Great View

Great location on the water. Very relaxing and the view is great. We have stayed in Boothbay and Southport for 20 years and this was our second summer at Driftwood and we plan to return.
