About Janan MacDonald
We are a family of four that decided to flee Chicago for a "one year" experiment in San Miguel de Allende. That was in 2009! We still spend a fair amount of time in Chicago, but it's a toss up as to which place we can really call home anymore! For now we are spending the school year in Mexico and the summers and holidays in Chicago - and squeezing in any other travels whenever we can.
Janan MacDonald purchased this House in 2011
Why Janan MacDonald chose Zona Centro
After a few years here in San Miguel, we finally decided to take the plunge and build a home here. We found the perfect architect for us, who was able to make a home that works with the climate and surroundings as best as possible. We designed and orientated the home in order to take advantage of passive solar, wind patterns, and even taking into consideration the neighboring home styles. We also incorporated a water reclamation system and solar panels for both electricity and hot water. Our goal was to make a beautiful and comfortable house with a minimal impact on the earth and resources. We were thrilled to find this particular lot because, in our opinion, it is the perfect location for getting into the center of town, as well as enjoying some tranquility. We also have an "arroyo" (stream) that runs through the front of the property. This can be a real sight to behold during the big downpours of the rainy season - literally becoming a rushing river. In the dry season, it is just a stone ravine, separating a small garden at the front of the property.
What makes this House unique
Our home offers so many places to relax, enjoy, depending on what you are feeling. You can be shooting baskets on the small court in the front, reading on the roof top, swimming in the pool, or just dozing off on a chaise lounge. There are public and private spaces - something for everyone, and every mood.

The perfect place
This is a stunning retreat! The kitchen/dining room leading to the outside patio next to the pool was a perfect place for our group to congregate. The house is kept in excellent shape; the lovely housekeeper came in three times during the week to clean and do the laundry. The property manager was very responsive to texts and followedthrough on all our requests in a very professional manner. The house is a 10 minute walk in to the Jardin and cabs are easily found in the area and it is close to The Rosewood Hotel.
A great experience!
We loved our stay at Casa de Toro! Unbelievable accommodations and well maintained. House manager was super helpful and responsive and owners were wonderful to deal with as well.
There is so much house to enjoy and little spaces for everyone for privacy. Centrally located so that it isn’t too far of a walk from anything.
The only thing I wish the house had was screens on the windows or doors because it was a bit hot when we were there, but also buggy at night, so we couldn’t leave the windows and the doors open to get some cool fresh air in.
Regardless, we would 100% stay here again the next time we are in San Miguel. It’s a gem.
A great spot in San Miguel de Allende
We had a lovely stay at this house. It was beautifully appointed, super comfortable, and well located in terms of being fairly close to town. All aspects of the stay were extremely well managed by both the owner and by the property manager. I wholeheartedly recommend this home for your stay in magical San Miguel de Allende!
Peaceful and Relaxing
My family loved our stay at Casa del Toro. It is a lovely property, beautifully designed for families. We found it to be incredibly quiet and peaceful, whether we were relaxing by the pool or sitting on the roof deck. Janan has created a very special home and has thought of every detail. My favorite place to relax was tucked into the built in couch by the pool, where I could smell the flowering jasmine and hear the birds as they darted around the property. We enjoyed so many aspects of this house: the landscaping, the design, the furnishings, the places to gather as a family, and the beautiful bathrooms with their strong showers. Silvia was a sweet housekeeper and Janan was quick to respond and very helpful.
Unfettered luxury, convenience, and beauty.
This home is luxuriously and architecturally pure. Simple, honest, clean materials artistically assembled to create a house where people can gather together or enjoy solitude and privacy. It is conveniently located a short walk from the Parque Juárez, the playground, wonderful restaurants, and shops. But it’s on a quiet residential street of private homes, and from the comfortable rooftop terrace the view of SMA is spectacular. The owners have generously shared pieces of themselves in the books and art, the furnishings and high quality provisions, bedding, appliances, towels, and attention to details which benefit their guests. The kitchen is magnificent. This is a home. The lovely housekeeper and gardener did their work unobtrusively but were available to respond to special requests, and Jonathan, the property manager, was most helpful facilitating arrival, departure, and when we wanted...catered meals.
We recommend La Casa del Toro to families or adults only. We spent a wonderful, memorable eight days.
ABSOLUTELY THE MOST LUXURIOUS HOME WE HAVE EVER RENTED!
My wife and I just finished renting this amazing place. It is absolutely the most stunning home we have ever rented and we have rented a lot of them - all over the world. The owners are fantastic as are their staff!
The house is a short walk to essentially everything, or a very short cab ride.
My wife and I live in NYC and we have a home in the Hampton's and this place absolutely hands down is more beautiful than any home I have seen in many many years.
Thank you for letting us stay!!!
