Faith Van De Putte
About Faith Van De Putte
You will drive right past our house on the way to the Field House. We both have deep roots on the Island. David started coming here with his family when he was 6 and Faith grew up here, in a little house her family built, in her great grandparents old alfalfa field. David was a commercial fisherman in Alaska and bought the land after a good season. He is the visionary who planted the 1,000+ trees in the hedgerow, built the yoga studio, the sauna, etc. David raised two daughters on the farm (Ani in highschool and Vilina, off at college). Faith had left the island and returned after 18 years away. We met 5 years ago and as they say "the rest is history"! On the farm David's passion is compost. He runs the only Department of Ecology approved on-farm composting facility in the County. We are proud to divert yard debris from the burn pile and keep that fertility bio-available by turning it into compost. Faith manages most of the gardens and the hoophouse. Both of us enjoy the animals- the Murray Grey cattle and the pigs. We are happy to show you around! We are committed to living solution to climate change and you will see many ways that this has influenced the design and managment choices on the farm. The Field House is a passive solar design and all the new buildings have high efficiency standards. We installed 9.5 KW photovoltaic array in 2013 and are able to meet most of our power needs. The compost facility is focused around diverting waste from burn piles and putting that carbon back into the soil where it can promote vitality, feed the plants and us! We rotionally graze our cattle to promote carbon sequestration in the soil. We are committed to sharing this beautiful place with the local Lopez community and beyond through the yoga studio, public walking trails and occasional community events. We are excited to open it up to visitors and provide an opportunity to step into island life with both its people and its solitude
Faith Van De Putte purchased this Farmhouse in 1988
Why Faith Van De Putte chose Lopez Island
In the center of the island, sun, open pastures, marshes, a historic orchard and turn of the century barn. Who wouldn't think it was the perfect place?
What makes this Farmhouse unique
This is a working farm and we welcome folks engaging with our lifestyle. Watch us move the cattle, feed the pigs your food scraps, dig in the compost and marvel at how hot it is, harvest from the garden, help with some planting or weeding.
