Willoughby's on the River is the most beautiful spot on the Yuba River in the heart of California's Gold Country. In the family since 1959, the property overlooks a splendid naturally-formed swimming hole and superb fishing spot. Willoughby's is perfect for small, medium and larger groups (up to a maximum of 8 individuals) and provides an ideal location to reconnect with nature and one another.
We have a cozy living room with Smart TV, a fully equipped kitchen with indoor and outdoor dining areas, two bedrooms, a sleeping alcove, two bathrooms, and laundry facilities.
Willoughby's is a perfect mountain getaway for two or a small family reunion. It provides a great space for rest and recreation away from the hustle and bustle of the city. But there's plenty of opportunity for active adventure if that's your preference.
Willoughby’s beckons to nature seekers, swimmers, sightseers, hikers, fishermen, gold panners, painters, mountain bikers, photographers, rock climbers, rafters and more. At Willoughby’s there's something for everyone!
Willoughby’s on the River is located at 171 River Street, Downieville, California. It is surrounded by the beautiful Tahoe National Forest, but is within short walking distance of historic downtown Downieville. Visit soon. We'd love to introduce you to "the most beautiful spot on the Yuba River."

About Elizabeth and Richard Halliday
I (Dallas) live and work in Arizona where I run a non-profit training company. I seem to have forgotten to retire, but I'm a dedicated homebody in my off time. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area (Palo Alto). My family camped in the Downieville area for years until Mother and Dad bought the cabin (that evolved into Willoughby's) for holidays and vacations. In the early 1970's my folks retired to Downieville after adding an extension to the house.
Elizabeth and Richard Halliday purchased this House in 1959
Why Elizabeth and Richard Halliday chose Downieville
I inherited Willoughby's in 2002. It has been in the family since 1959. It's where I go to "reclaim my center" and reconnect with my roots. I love nothing better than to sit on the deck with a good book and a glass of wine.
What makes this House unique
I feel so lucky to be able to share this beautiful, one-of-a-kind spot with others. My parents put a lot of effort into the property and would be so proud to hear how much others are enjoying it now. (I'm grateful to Liz and Richard Halliday of the Carriage House Inn who manage the property and make "sharing" possible.)
