A lovely quiet setting
This is a lovely property up a quiet track (literally!). It is based in a small group of other rental properties, which whilst we were there were mainly used at weekends. It was very quiet though even when the other families were there. It is well equipped. We were greeted by the owner in Colico & taken to the house as it is a little off the beaten track. We were shown round the property & given a small welcome basket. There were plenty of the general provisions which can be difficult to buy in small quantities plus some additions such as pasta, tea, coffee. The house was very clean and well prepared. Whilst this farmhouse doesn't boast air conditioning, it is kept cool by the use of shutters. It has two outside sitting areas which capture the sun all day and also have some areas of sun protection. It has after a short walk a very quiet beach (not suitable for someone who is limited in their walking), which allows you to watch the setting sun over the Alps on the opposite side of the lake in the evening. The owner who says he doesn't speak English, actually does get by very well and checked on us a couple of times, both by email and short visits without being intrusive. Whilst it is a little drive to Piona and Colico, it is lovely, quiet and restful, we would return.
Grazie per la vostra gentilezza siete sempre i benvenuti. Giovanni
Entspannte Tage am Comer See
welcome to Colico, the last village on the eastern shore, north of Bellano and east of Sorico. Destination for water sports enthusiasts and kitesurfing this country is an important tourist hub, both for those who want to relax along its shores or walk through its mountains, and for those who transit in the direction of Val Chiavenna or renowned alpine resorts, such as Madesimo , Bormio, Livigno and St Moritz.
Surrounded by the imposing Monte Legnone, the village has developed on two hills, called Montecchio, on the edge of what was once a swamp and today is the largest and most important nature reserve in Lombardy: the Plan of Spain.
Turn between its hills, in the old part, and on the lakefront, then go to visit the forts Del Montecchio and Fuentes. Head south, the Olgiasca peninsula will welcome you with the tranquility of its coasts and its pond. Here are some religious buildings of considerable importance as well as the nineteenth-century Villa Malpensata. If you push a little further south, just above Dervio, you will find a magnificent fortress: the Castello di Corenno Plinio.
The lakeside environment allows you to practice many water sports, especially sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing, while the quiet bay of Piona is the ideal place for relaxing days on the beach. The nearby Monte Legnone, however, will satisfy the most demanding hikers with its 2609 meters and views of the most rewarding of all the Orobie Alps. l Montecchio is the only fort of the World War I still intact. Project by Enrico Rocchi built on two floors in cement and stone between 1911 and 1914, it is structured in a central body and a wing, with the military quarters, connected by a tunnel in the rock.
The greatest interest in the construction is given by the four original guns, the largest in Italy, whose functioning mechanisms are still intact. Inside, there is also a small war museum.
Of Forte Fuentes, dating back to the seventeenth century, only the ruins are preserved, located between the vegetation of the Colle del Montecchio and visibly degraded. The complex, however, still presents some ideas of interest, such as the remains of the so-called "Tenaglia" and the chapel.
The place that offers the most attractions is definitely the peninsula dell'Olgiasca: here are Villa Malpensata and the beautiful Abbey of Piona.
The nineteenth-century Villa Malpensata is located facing the lake and includes a large porch and a park; currently it is the seat of the "Il Gabbiano" Community.
The Abbey of Piona, also known as the Priory of Piona complex, is the great attraction of the municipality of Colico. Set against a rocky promontory that descends on a charming pond, the complex is formed by the church of San Nicola, built on the remains of a seventh century oratory, a large cloister, built in the years 1252-1257, and a beautiful park with the orchard all surrounding. Today the Abbey is entrusted to the Cistercian monks who have reintroduced the ancient art of distilling herbs.
Pushing you towards the village of Corenno Plinio, towards Dervio-Bellano, you can visit a well-preserved castle built in 1300 by the Andreani family. Beside the fortress it is possible to visit a church containing fourteenth century frescoes and the gothic tombs of the family.
How to get to Colico

From Orio al Serio it may be convenient to go to the Bergamo station and move towards Lecco.
On the train
Colico has a convenient station, in about 1 hour and 30 minutes the direct regional train will take you here from the center of Milan. From Bergamo, however, it is necessary to change at the Lecco station.
