Perfect for two couples

  • 5 of 5

We rented the home for a week and it is just the right size for two couples. Great views all around. Easy to relax in. Kitchen a bit short on dinner knives, wine glasses & coffee cups, but otherwise fully stocked. We were visiting friends on the cay so the included golf cart made it easy to get around. Barry was very solicitous that we enjoy our stay -- and we did! Lovely island, great community and welcoming people too.

I stayed there for a week, and the accommodations were superb! Everything was in working order and very clean. The views were awesome and could not ask for a better place. Will most definitely be staying there again. Internet and TV were a big plus!

It don't get better than this (Song by the Barefoot Man)

Swept Away could not have been better, which is more than I can say for VRBO which lost my first attempt at writing an excellent review.

From the outset, it was a real pleasure working with Barry. Not only did the rental go smoothly, but he also made recommendations for travel to Staniel Cay from Nassau and boat rental. We had originally thought to go to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, but it is always fully booked, but, having now been to Staniel Cay, renting Swept Away was a far better option.

We were two couples over 70, with 3 of the 4 having lived in Nassau for a minimum of 12 years each. So we knew the Bahamas well, and consider the Exumas to be one of the best, and arguably the best, vacation spots in the whole Bahamas. The private plane from Nassau provides some exquisite views of the colors of the Exumas.

Swept Away was ideal for two couples. It is bright, comfortable, and has a magnificent 360 view as it is on one of the highest points of the island (about 60'). This also means it gets the breeze, which adds to the comfort and obviates the need for the a/c for a lot of the time. The golf cart is a big plus for getting around.

If you're looking for great night life, this is not the place for you. The Yacht Club is lively, but there's nothing else. The food at the Yacht Club is very good, and, given the cost of getting anything to Staniel Cay, is quite reasonable. The Taste and Sea restaurant has good Bahamian food, but they soaked us on drink prices. Big Dogs usually has Pig Feet Souse, which you should try if you want a real Bahamian specialty.

If you are able to provision up before going to Staniel Cay, you should do so. The 3 grocery stores have limited selections, and, if the mail boat doesn't come in, may run out of even staples.

You can't go to Exumas without going out in a boat. Barry's caretaker, Berkie Rolle, runs a store and a marina and rents out boats. The water is maybe the most beautiful in the world and there are plenty of islands with beautiful beaches close by, so you don't need to be an expert boater, just learn how to "read" the depth of the water by looking at it.

If you want a (mostly) self-catering, peaceful, relaxing, reasonably priced, idyllic vacation, you would have to look hard to beat Swept Away and Staniel Cay.

Love Swept Away!

  • 5 of 5

We had some challenges getting to Staniel Cay. Our flight was delayed out of Newark to Nassau due to plane maintenance issue and we missed our connection flight to Staniel Cay. We ended up spending a night in Nassau. Barry, thank you for going the extra mile helping us get to Staniel Cay! You checked in with us as we arrived, making sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable and enjoy our vacation. Milly (housekeeper) is very sweet. She picked us up at the airport, showed us how to get around town and everything else we needed during our stay.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us and letting us use your golf cart! We love the décor of the house. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck and just admiring the beauty of the island.

Your Swept Away home is the perfect location on the island. Very close to stores, restaurants and quiet beaches. We loved the beach closest to the Swept Away home. It’s always quiet there and made us feel like we have the whole island to ourselves.

People on the island are very friendly. We enjoyed eating local foods and buying fresh homemade bread from Emil’s. The beaches here have the most pristine water we’ve ever seen. We loved visiting the pig beach. We will be back for sure to create new memories!

Wonderful accommodation, great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted to write and say what a wonderful time we had at Swept Away. My wife and I spent a week there in May of 2014, and we were so glad we made the decision to stay. From the moment we arrived Barry and his helpers made our visit wonderful, he is a very gracious host. We were met at the airport with a golf cart, zipped off to the house, and from the moment we stepped into Swept Away we knew we would love it.

The house is very clean, well-appointed and extremely comfortable. You have a 360 view of Staniel Cay including wonderful views of the deep blue Atlantic to the east, and the turquoise Carribean to the west. And listen carefully, what do you hear? The wind, the ocean, birds… and nothing else. In the evening there is a star filled sky, milky way, and the sound of crickets (yes, they have crickets in the Caribbean). Throw open a couple of the many sliding doors or large picture windows and let the Caribbean breeze blow through the house. Catch the sent flowering bushes that surround the house. Dim the lights and open a bottle of wine. Recline in a comfortable chair and feel the stresses and burdens of life lift off you and drift away in the breeze.

If you are looking for a Bahamas experience that offers some wonderful solitude and comfort, then Swept away is a perfect fit. You can always jump into the golf cart and zip across the island to the yacht club (5 min away) for the drinks and music. But when you’re done with Jimmy Buffet and the frosty drinks, you get to go home to Swept Away. And you’ll be so very glad that you made the decision to stay there too.

Owner's Response: Hello Allen, Thank you so much for the wonderful review. It was a pleasure having such appreciative guests, and all the way from California. It's really great to see that someone else feels EXACTLY the way we do when we spend time in our home "Swept Away", and in the Staniel Cay area. There are no words to describe it, you really must experience it yourself! Next time you come, I would like to make plans to actually meet the two of you. Thanks again, and stay well! Warmest regards, Barry
