About Kate Kerns

I am the 5th generation in our family to enjoy cherished summers at Nags Head. From babies splashing in the surf to celebrating 90th birthdays, we have made many family memories here. We bought this house when it became available as our extended family was outgrowing our original family home.

Kate Kerns purchased this house in 1968

Why Kate Kerns chose Northern Coast & Outer Banks

Nags Head's pristine coastline is right out of the front door. Whether you wake to see the sunrise over the Atlantic or linger in rocking chairs watching the sunset over Jockey's Ridge, you'll love enjoying this beautiful part of the world.

What makes this house unique

The "Unpainted Aristocracy" as this area is known as consists of approximately 40 houses built in the late 1800's to early 1900's. The ocean breezes, sound of the surf and laid back lifestyle will instantly relax you. Much of our house remains original but with updates to make life comfortable. Most of our current renters have been enjoying our house for the past 20 plus years. Some have even passed down "their" time to the next generation. We hope you'll make our beloved house part of your family history too!

Fantastically awesome

I found one bad thing about this place: having to leave.

The Badham-Kittrell cottage is like a lover you’d like to keep to yourself yet simultaneously show to the world, so I understand the other reviewer’s reluctance to share this awesome cottage. It was so exciting to be able to stay among such history for our first visit to Nags Head. One thing that struck us upon entering is that it was so spotless. Not a speck of sand or dirt anywhere. Another thing that struck us is how at home we felt. That’s never happened in our past 20 years staying in Hatteras. We flung open the windows and doors and felt the ocean breeze and pretty much never left the porch except to laze on the sand.

We didn't use the A/C (there are units in the bedrooms but I told my husband we were going to live like they did in 1928) and there is no TV. It really allowed us to reconnect and read or just watch the scenery go by.

Kate is very responsive when you need her, but we had no questions or problems.

The kitchen is so well stocked I was shocked. I’m used to carting down plates, pans, pots, paper products, cleaning solutions, sponges, soap, etc. (I still did, not knowing what I’d find), but the cottage had everything you’d need and more, including spices and condiments; just replenish what you’ve used. The two fridges and ice maker were a genius decision.

I was so sad when we had to leave and can’t wait until next year.

I read about the Unpainted Aristocracy three years ago while we were staying in Avon. I never thought I would find one to rent!

I was so sad when we had to leave and can’t wait until next year. Thank you for sharing your house, Kate!

We had a fantastic time!

  • 5 of 5

This spot is old Nags Head at its best! It's a no frills cottage- which is just we wanted. We loved all the porches - allowing you to enjoy some of the most beautiful beach imaginable. There was plenty of room for family members that came and went all week long. The air conditioned kitchen was a plus. Made cooking for all those folks lots more comfortable. Kate provided all the supplies imaginable and the store close by made it easy to refurbish everything we used. Trust me- it was hard to leave!

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this old cottage! The previous reviewers already wrote rave reviews and we agree with them. This cottage was wonderful and it felt as if we had gone to a relative's home and not a rental. We enjoyed seeing the family pictures and the many memories of the owner's family. It is a well loved summer cottage. It was a very relaxed vacation and we enjoyed the rocking chairs and hammock at the wraparound porch. The place was very clean and fully stocked; we were used to the Ocean City, MD rentals which typically do not provide anything other than cooking and dining utensils but this rental was very well equipped. The owner, Kate, was very quick when responding to our questions. This was truly a worry-free rental and hopefully we can come back next summer.

Hesitated writing this review ....

  • 5 of 5

I hesitated writing this review .... Because I loved this house so much I'm afraid others will learn on in and I won't be able to rent it again :) but Kate was so kind and answered all my questions promptly I felt I owed it to the family to share my family's wonder experience at the Kitrell Cottage. My entire family was pleased with my choice of accommodations for our week in Nags Head. This cottage location is great not only is it right on the beach there's no dunes blocking your view. You can sit on the covered porch all day and watch the Dolphins, pelicans and shore birds. No one missed not having a TV which is a reason I wanted to stay here. No distractions just family time. I've traveled a lot and have rented many vacations homes and condos and this house was the most well stocked I've ever rented ! We all loved the separate ice maker ! What a nice touch. Great location in old Nags Head cottage row always from all the crazieness but still close to grocery stores and restaurants. I must warn you that this is a cottage from the 1930's so DO NOT expect fancy but expect unique! This cottage is for anyone wanted to go back in time and experience when life was simple. The house will met all your basic needs and more. Plenty of seating for everyone. The front porch rocking chairs were always a hit. We can't wait to go back again.

Perfect Old Nags Head Cottage

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough good things about the experience we had at this charming cottage. This is place where you feel like time stopped in the 1930's. The views from the porch of the ocean are spectacular and the beach was never crowded. Great escape from the hustle and bustle of life!

In the summer, the Beachcomber Museum which is across the street is often open on Thursdays and Fridays. This is an amazing collection of "treasures" gathered from the beach over the lifetime of Nellie Myrtle Pridgen.
