About Gavin Bruce
We have been visiting St Ives since 1998 when we met at the famous New Year's Eve celebrations. We immediately fell in love with the place and finally realised our dream to buy a house a few years ago. We are both teachers and have two girls and a little black dog who can't get enough of the place. We come down as often as we can but really like the fact that other people can make the most of Seren House.
Gavin Bruce purchased this House in 2013
Why Gavin Bruce chose St Ives
'Seren' means star in Cornish and the stars certainly shine brightly in St Ives. The House is situated in 'Upalong' and was build in the late 1800's when the railway arrived offering an alternative to the traditional fisherman's cottages. Unlike many of the holiday properties in St Ives, it has lots of space and is accessible without having to climb steep hills or battle with heavy traffic on busy changeover days. It benefits from being close to the shops, cinema, theatre, pubs and restaurants but far enough away from the main street that you can relax in peace and quiet. Seren House is equidistant from all five beaches that are so unique, it can feel like you are on a different holiday every day. If you enjoy surfing, boogie boarding or stand up paddle boarding it's a short walk over the hill to Porthmeor, a stunning surf beach with really consistent waves. If art is more your thing you can spend hours ambling through the town to Downalong where you'll find a plethora of galleries including the Barbara Hepworth Museum at the end of our road and the Tate St Ives.
What makes this House unique
The accommodation is very flexible and we have arranged the house to comfortably sleep as many people as possible. We often spend a week with three families in the house. The three double bedrooms; the Master bedroom, Rear Double and Attic Room are spacious and luxurious for adults with double or king sized beds and an ensuite bathroom in the Master bedroom and half bathroom in the Attic. These are light and airy with only the sound of the gulls to lull you to sleep. The two bunk rooms have triple beds in them which mean that they are fairly bijou but does mean that you can sleep up to six children or a combination of adults and children. We find that the kids love to share the bunks with their friends and spend most of the day exploring the beaches or playing in the large lounge/diner so it works perfectly for us.

Fabulous house and so convenient for town.
Fabulous house to stay in and so easy to walk into town. Although the house sleeps 10-12 people there are two rooms with bunk beds which had to sleep two adults in our party so that wasn’t ideal. However, that didn’t detract too much from our stay.
The house is beautifully decorated and fully equipped. Lovely quirky bits too. Love the kitchen table top! Thanks Gavin and family for letting us stay and thanks Geraldine for being so accommodating. Judy Bowden
Thanks for the lovely review Judy. We love it when guests enjoy the house. We do try and describe the bedrooms clearly on the website and suggest they are better for children. We are hoping to extend the attic this Winter so might be able to offer singles that would suit adults in the near future.
Great location, lovely house
We had a lovely stay at Seren House. The property is perfectly located, just a couple of minutes walk to the town centre/harbor beach and about 5-10 mins walk to Porthmeor Beach if you are more into the surf. The house is lovely and clean with a well equipped kitchen and the living area is spacious for big groups. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that the parking space is at the back of the house and up a very steep hill which could be difficult for older people to walk up (but this is St Ives!) and also there isn't any outside space you could really sit in, although there is an outside area to dry clothes. But overall we had a great stay.
Many thanks for the review. The hill is a little steep but not much we can do about that and we think it's definitely worth it to have the parking in St Ives. Hope to see you again soon.
Perfect family holiday
We had a lovely family holiday in Seren House. Spacious and clean. Good base for the beaches. Everything you could need in the kitchen. Everything was just perfect. Thank you .
Many thanks for the review and hope to see you back at Seren House soon.
Great house & good location.
The house provided everything we needed and a lovely little extra in the kitchen for when we arrived! It was clean and tidy. Good central location in St Ives. Very prompt communication with the owner and housekeeper. We would recommend this property.
Many thanks for the review and hope to see you again soon.
Lovely property, not keen on the steep back entrance. Super location and amazing views from the top
Would have found it crowded with more than 7 of us in the House. Plus a lot of internal steps/ stairs so not ideal for young children.
Would recommend to friends and even stay again.
Thanks for the review. You're right, there are some steep steps that we point out in the description so that people are aware. St Ives is built on a hill and the houses are Victorian so tricky to do much about it but, as you say, you get great views!
Hope to see you again soon.
Great family house in St Ives
Had a wonderful stay in this comfortable, lovingly furnished home in St. Ives. Plenty of room for everyone, lots of nice touches to add to a fun family vacation. Really appreciated great restaurant recommendations from the owners. So much to do in St. Ives and Cornwall, hope to return one day and would definitely stay at Seren House. Only hiccup we had was a little trouble finding the parking spot, but once parked loved hiking the coastal path and lovely visit to the Tate Gallery.
Thanks for the review. We do include a map on the site to direct guests to the parking on the street above the garden but it can be a little tricky to find!
Hope to see you again soon.
