About Gavin Bruce
We have been visiting St Ives since 1998 when we met at the famous New Year's Eve celebrations. We immediately fell in love with the place and finally realised our dream to buy a house a few years ago. We are both teachers and have two girls and a little black dog who can't get enough of the place. We come down as often as we can but really like the fact that other people can make the most of Seren House.
Gavin Bruce purchased this House in 2013
Why Gavin Bruce chose St Ives
'Seren' means star in Cornish and the stars certainly shine brightly in St Ives. The House is situated in 'Upalong' and was build in the late 1800's when the railway arrived offering an alternative to the traditional fisherman's cottages. Unlike many of the holiday properties in St Ives, it has lots of space and is accessible without having to climb steep hills or battle with heavy traffic on busy changeover days. It benefits from being close to the shops, cinema, theatre, pubs and restaurants but far enough away from the main street that you can relax in peace and quiet. Seren House is equidistant from all five beaches that are so unique, it can feel like you are on a different holiday every day. If you enjoy surfing, boogie boarding or stand up paddle boarding it's a short walk over the hill to Porthmeor, a stunning surf beach with really consistent waves. If art is more your thing you can spend hours ambling through the town to Downalong where you'll find a plethora of galleries including the Barbara Hepworth Museum at the end of our road and the Tate St Ives.
What makes this House unique
The accommodation is very flexible and we have arranged the house to comfortably sleep as many people as possible. We often spend a week with three families in the house. The three double bedrooms; the Master bedroom, Rear Double and Attic Room are spacious and luxurious for adults with double or king sized beds and an ensuite bathroom in the Master bedroom and half bathroom in the Attic. These are light and airy with only the sound of the gulls to lull you to sleep. The two bunk rooms have triple beds in them which mean that they are fairly bijou but does mean that you can sleep up to six children or a combination of adults and children. We find that the kids love to share the bunks with their friends and spend most of the day exploring the beaches or playing in the large lounge/diner so it works perfectly for us.

Ideally situated for our families New Year's Eve celebrations, lovely comfortable clean house, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & will be recommending you to our family & friends. Thank you x
Many thanks, really glad you had a good time!
a bit claustrophobic for 10 otherwise fine
clean, well equipped . attic bedrom up precipitous stairs and no carpet so very noisy for bedrooms below. bedding good cotton, quilt excellent. again, precipitous steps up from courtyard, but this along with high walls and fences made it feel claustrophobic. we did not use these steps at all. very central for town and beaches. parking some (hilly) way from house and only suitable for 2 smallish cars. shower downstairs really really good! comfy chairs in sitting room and the WII made the children very happy! open fire not functional sadly but heating very efficient.we had a good time but I would not book again as a little cramped for 6 adults and 4 children and the bedroom and garden steps were concerning. just one niggly thing- we have a holiday let and leave wine, biscuits, dishwasher tablets, milk, bin bags, dog treats, 4 tea towels, kitchen towel. etc.we do not expect them to be replaced as with the wine at this property, and our cottage is much less expensive.
the housekeepers were fairly horrified to find us still there at 10.30 but I have email instructions saying in at 4 pm and out by 11 am. As it happened we only had to pop the bags in the car but were roundly admonished by one of the ladies which left rather a sour taste for the end of our break. perhaps some customer service training might be in order? Gavin has been of great help from booking to arrival and we looked after his house as we would our own, if we had a smaller group we would consider seren house again.
Many thanks for your review and we're really pleased you found the property clean and comfortable.
I am sorry you were surprised by the arrival of the cleaners on your final day. They need to start by 10am to ensure they get the property clean and ready for the arrival of the next guests and we let guests know this in the property info.
All guests are provided with all the essentials; dishwasher tablets, milk, bin bags, tea towels, kitchen towel etc. as well as a freshly baked Cornish Cream tea and fresh flowers. As an extra, we also leave a bottle of wine in case anyone wants a glass on arrival after a long journey that we ask guests to replace!
The steps to the rear of the house and to the attic are steep which is the nature of traditional houses in St Ives. This is something we do make an effort to point out to potential guests.
Wonderful home. Awesome location. Comfortable and clean. Better in real life.
Our family had a wonderful stay at Seren House. Comfy beds, lovely decor, well appointed kitchen a gorgeous home from home.
The Cornish cream tea, flowers and wine were a nice touch. We had felt exhausted after our journey and dove into the scones, jam and clotted cream all washed down with hot tea. Yummy.
The terraced garden is equipped with a coal BBQ, a fire pit, swing chair and dining tables. Watching the sun set over St Ives whilst dining on the terrace was wonderful.
The house is located close to where we wanted to be, near to down town St Ives but far enough away to be quiet at night.
Thank you. We can't wait to come back.
Many thanks! We will try and get some pictures of and from the garden on the site - still work in progress and it will be even better for next time.
Wonderful property, fabulous location. Had a great time even in the rain!
Shame it was raining but really pleased you had a good time. Hope to see you again, in the sun next time!
Extremely comfortable house with character and close to town and beaches . Lots of crockery in the house enough for the 12 of us. Comfy beds and good quality bedding. Had great time in St ives and would definitely return, and to Serren house.
Many thanks for your review and really pleased you had a good time in St Ives! We can't wait to get back.
