About Gavin Bruce
We have been visiting St Ives since 1998 when we met at the famous New Year's Eve celebrations. We immediately fell in love with the place and finally realised our dream to buy a house a few years ago. We are both teachers and have two girls and a little black dog who can't get enough of the place. We come down as often as we can but really like the fact that other people can make the most of Seren House.
Gavin Bruce purchased this House in 2013
Why Gavin Bruce chose St Ives
'Seren' means star in Cornish and the stars certainly shine brightly in St Ives. The House is situated in 'Upalong' and was build in the late 1800's when the railway arrived offering an alternative to the traditional fisherman's cottages. Unlike many of the holiday properties in St Ives, it has lots of space and is accessible without having to climb steep hills or battle with heavy traffic on busy changeover days. It benefits from being close to the shops, cinema, theatre, pubs and restaurants but far enough away from the main street that you can relax in peace and quiet. Seren House is equidistant from all five beaches that are so unique, it can feel like you are on a different holiday every day. If you enjoy surfing, boogie boarding or stand up paddle boarding it's a short walk over the hill to Porthmeor, a stunning surf beach with really consistent waves. If art is more your thing you can spend hours ambling through the town to Downalong where you'll find a plethora of galleries including the Barbara Hepworth Museum at the end of our road and the Tate St Ives.
What makes this House unique
The accommodation is very flexible and we have arranged the house to comfortably sleep as many people as possible. We often spend a week with three families in the house. The three double bedrooms; the Master bedroom, Rear Double and Attic Room are spacious and luxurious for adults with double or king sized beds and an ensuite bathroom in the Master bedroom and half bathroom in the Attic. These are light and airy with only the sound of the gulls to lull you to sleep. The two bunk rooms have triple beds in them which mean that they are fairly bijou but does mean that you can sleep up to six children or a combination of adults and children. We find that the kids love to share the bunks with their friends and spend most of the day exploring the beaches or playing in the large lounge/diner so it works perfectly for us.

Great house & good location.
The house provided everything we needed and a lovely little extra in the kitchen for when we arrived! It was clean and tidy. Good central location in St Ives. Very prompt communication with the owner and housekeeper. We would recommend this property.
Great family house in St Ives
Had a wonderful stay in this comfortable, lovingly furnished home in St. Ives. Plenty of room for everyone, lots of nice touches to add to a fun family vacation. Really appreciated great restaurant recommendations from the owners. So much to do in St. Ives and Cornwall, hope to return one day and would definitely stay at Seren House. Only hiccup we had was a little trouble finding the parking spot, but once parked loved hiking the coastal path and lovely visit to the Tate Gallery.
Lovely property, not keen on the steep back entrance. Super location and amazing views from the top
Would have found it crowded with more than 7 of us in the House. Plus a lot of internal steps/ stairs so not ideal for young children.
Would recommend to friends and even stay again.
We enjoyed a great holiday based at Seren House at the end of May
We spent a week here over the May half term holiday (2018). Gavin had been excellent in answering all the questions we had before our visit, and even got in touch on the day of our arrival to tell us that it was ready and that we could check in early. The rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped with everything we needed for our party of ten (six adults and four children). There was plenty of room for us to eat together around the extended dining table and to relax in the lounge. The wet room downstairs was really useful for showers and changing after the beach, and as an extra toilet and shower when the others were occupied. The bedrooms were a good size with comfortable beds.
Two things to be aware of when booking. First that parking could be difficult. We had three largish cars and would have been stuck if our neighbour had not generously offered us an extra parking space. Even with two cars it was still tricky to get in and out because of a low wall blocking one parking space - it would be much better if it were possible to remove this. It might also discourage people from parking in the road right up to entrance making turning in difficult. Second - just be aware that the loft room is reached by steep stairs behind a door on the landing, and that the ensuite toliet and small basin does not have much room to move. It was fine for us, and we enjoyed the space and views up there, but you might want to bear that in mind when allocating rooms to members of your group.
All in all we had a great hoiiday and would probably come back again if we were staying in St Ives together. Thank you for making us so welcome.
