About Dawn and Jeff Ameel

My husband Jeff and I both grew up in Traverse City. We bought this property 15 years ago as a summer home for our family when our children were growing up. We originally bought the 3 bedroom house adjacent to this property, and then bought the cottage to use as a guest house.

Dawn and Jeff Ameel purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Dawn and Jeff Ameel chose Northwest

Having grown up in Traverse City it was important to us to own a home back in T.C. We were living in Asia at the time this property was purchased. We wanted a place to bring our children for the summer. Having lived in large metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Hong Kong we were looking for a place that was quiet and surrounded by nature.

What makes this cottage unique

We chose this property mainly for the peace and quiet. It is at the end of a two track road with no traffic. We can sit on our front deck and see deer, rabbits and birds. We love the sound of the rippling water of the river. We have learned to enjoy kayaking, tubing and fishing on this beautiful clean river.

Charming cabin- fun and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Very nice clean cabin. Perfect for our party of 3. We want to say thank you to caretaker Mike. We had questions about using the kayaks on the river and he offered to give us a little lesson on his own time. His kindness was so appreciated. We enjoyed our time in Traverse City. The Lackey Family

Such a beautiful cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan on booking again

So cozy and comfortable. We loved sitting out by the river. It was very relaxing. And watching a for and her fawns play across the river was awesome. Highly recommend this place for a weekend or even a week long get away. Quiet and not much traffic noise but still close to traverse city

Terrific rental!

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin - first I loved that the landscaping is cut short from house to river, but that the sides of the property remain dense forest - you cannot see or hear the neighbors. However, 10 minutes and you're pretty much anywhere in Traverse City so it felt like being alone in the forest but there's a Meier's (and Lucky's if you lean more organic/healthful) a few minutes away. It is quiet and wonderfully dark at night - no bright street lamps to ruin the serenity. Thankfully firm mattresses - (if you don't like the mattress you seriously need a chiropractor.) The Master bed is actually built up so you can see the river over the window sill while laying in bed) Yes, there is Wi-Fi so you can connect to the world if you wish. My intention was to draft out the sequel to my book "Your Poisoned Plate" but the natural beauty kept ushering me outside. Highlight of the week - the elderly couple who originally owned the house and cottage stopped by for a charming reminiscence of times gone by. The owners - who are exceptionally accommodating and responded to any questions I had promptly - provided a drip coffee maker for my a.m. java AND a Keurig for my Matcha green tea afternoon fix. Rent this place (just don't do it on the week that I want ;) -- Allan Frank

Good Time

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean and large enough for my family of four. My young children enjoyed the fire pits, hammock and watching kayakers float down the river. It was not far from downtown Traverse City and an easy drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes. We really enjoyed our stay. Thanks!

Neat place, peaceful setting, few issues

  • 3 of 5

Serene and peaceful setting. Cottage is nicely decorated. Has a Keurig coffee maker which was a nice touch. Only issues were the water and temperature control. The water has a strong mineral smell (iron?) most noticeable in the shower. Didn't notice it as much in the sinks. There's also no central air. Plenty of fans provided. I didn't mind but since hubby likes it cold when he sleeps, that didn't work out well.

Owner's Response: Hi Holly, I am very sorry you did not read on our VRBO website that there was no central air conditioning at the cottage. I wish you would have mentioned that having a cold room to sleep in for your husband was important. If I had known before or during your stay that you were unhappy I could have moved you next door to our rental home that was available during the same days as your stay. The house has central A/C and a water softener that helps with the well water. Thank you for your kind comments that you wrote in our guest book at the cottage. Dawn
