About Dawn and Jeff Ameel

My husband Jeff and I both grew up in Traverse City. We bought this property 15 years ago as a summer home for our family when our children were growing up. We originally bought the 3 bedroom house adjacent to this property, and then bought the cottage to use as a guest house.

Dawn and Jeff Ameel purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Dawn and Jeff Ameel chose Northwest

Having grown up in Traverse City it was important to us to own a home back in T.C. We were living in Asia at the time this property was purchased. We wanted a place to bring our children for the summer. Having lived in large metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Hong Kong we were looking for a place that was quiet and surrounded by nature.

What makes this cottage unique

We chose this property mainly for the peace and quiet. It is at the end of a two track road with no traffic. We can sit on our front deck and see deer, rabbits and birds. We love the sound of the rippling water of the river. We have learned to enjoy kayaking, tubing and fishing on this beautiful clean river.

Perfect Boardman getaway

  • 5 of 5

We picked it for the location - close enough to Traverse City to enjoy the Film Festival, but we also loved the up-to-date cottage in a bucolic spot. We enjoyed eating and sitting on the deck, watching kayakers and canoers float by, and the quiet at night. The kitchen had everything we needed and the grill on the deck was a bonus. And the secluded yard was perfect for our dog who enjoyed being lazy in the sun or in the shade on the deck.

Great Place!

  • 5 of 5

It was a great place just to get away from it all, but still close enough to the restaurants and bars in Traverse City. It was also within an hours drive to Sleepy Bear Dunes, which we traveled to twice (once for the Dune Climb and another time just to go to the beach). It was extremely peaceful at night and a great place to have a good cookout. The cottage was extremely clean once we arrived and vacation-ready!

Quick Get Away Before School Starts

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the cabin. Everything was clean and ready for us when we got there. IT was easy to check in and all the contact information was available and the property managers responded right away with answers to our questions ( how do we go tubing and laundry) The cabin is on the smaller side but plenty of space for a family of 4. Loved the fire pit and ability to tube down the river. We spent a majority of our time exploring the area. Traverse City, Empire and the peninsula. It was nice to come back to a place to rest and cook if we needed. Played lots of games as a family and had a fire pit..

It would be nice to have laundry at the cabin as well.. As we were on a week long road trip through Michigan. That being said Lindsay allowed us to throw in a load at the house which is the adjoining property. This was so nice and incredibly helpful!! Very accommodating.

I think next time we will look into booking both properties as the cabin has a rustic feel and the house is a little more modern, upscale and additional amenities. Put the older kids at the cabin and adults at the house :)

Wow! Exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Such a cozy, perfectly located cottage! Thanks so much Dawn and Jeff for making this a great vacation for us! We had so much fun relaxing on the deck, lounging by the river, and sitting around the fire. We went tubing down the river, and had a blast! Thanks for exceeding our expectations! We will definitely be coming back soon!

Clean and great setting on the river.

  • 5 of 5

We had a family vacation with our toddler. We thought this place was super clean and well kept. We loved having the space to feel like we were at home on vacation, yet close to amenities and Traverse City. We went to sleeping bear dunes for a day, went to a lighthouse and beach another day north of traverse city. We loved having the cottage to retreat to in the evenings to relax near the river and fire pit. I rarely write reviews, but we would stay here again if we traveled back to Traverse City. Highly recommend the stay here.
