About Dawn and Jeff Ameel
My husband Jeff and I both grew up in Traverse City. We bought this property 15 years ago as a summer home for our family when our children were growing up. We originally bought the 3 bedroom house adjacent to this property, and then bought the cottage to use as a guest house.
Dawn and Jeff Ameel purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Dawn and Jeff Ameel chose Traverse City
Having grown up in Traverse City it was important to us to own a home back in T.C. We were living in Asia at the time this property was purchased. We wanted a place to bring our children for the summer. Having lived in large metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Hong Kong we were looking for a place that was quiet and surrounded by nature.
What makes this Cottage unique
We chose this property mainly for the peace and quiet. It is at the end of a two track road with no traffic. We can sit on our front deck and see deer, rabbits and birds. We love the sound of the rippling water of the river. We have learned to enjoy kayaking, tubing and fishing on this beautiful clean river.

Loved this place! Not far from Traverse City.
This cottage is very secluded. You have to take windy, one-lane roads and a bridge to get there. It's perfect for people who truly want to be away from it all. The Boardman River runs right past the backyard. There is a fire pit, big deck and patio furniture, and a nice grill. Inside is so clean and nicely decorated. Exactly how it is pictured. Extremely comfortable bed, and lots of windows. You feel like you're right out there in nature even when you're inside. Also has WIFI. Considering it's in the boonies, it doesn't take more than 15 - 20 minutes to get to downtown Traverse City. Owners and property manager were very helpful and responsive to our questions.
Thank you Karen!! We hope you can come back again!
Just What the Family Needed
The four of us had a great time. The property is very quiet and the neighbors helped when we couldn't find the entrance to the property on day 1 (look for the red umbrella!). Our two girls enjoyed playing by the river, lounging in the hammock, and reading on the back deck. We had two clear nights and the star gazing was awesome (bring a telescope if you have one). The cottage is a good size for parents with two children, and is one of the cleanest places we have ever stayed. We brought our own food and made good use of the full kitchen and outdoor grill. Traverse City is only a 15 minute drive away, which made day tripping very convenient. Looking forward to returning someday.
This is a peaceful property on the river in the country. The river flowing by is very tranquil. We were pleasantly surprised to find air conditioning, (evidently new this year) since we arrived on a 95 degree day. Although in a very private setting, it is only a few minutes to a grocery store and 10 minutes to the west side of Traverse City, where you can find anything you could possibly need. The cottage provides everything you need, nice linens, soft towels and a fully equipped kitchen.
Great little getaway from the city. The cottage was nice and clean and the owners were great. Would definitely reccomend this place. Thanks.
Awesome vacation cottage!
The cottage on the river was cozy, clean and comfortable! Very quiet and secluded yet Traverse City was only a 15-20 minute drive away. We are already considering our next visit to the river cottage!
We are so happy you enjoyed your stay at the river!! We hope you come back again!
