Experience Country Living, Hawaiian Style! Friendly Farm animals, Orchards, River Ocean Walks, Adventure!
Enjoy the ideal location on the beautiful Hamakua Coast, the green side of the Big Island of Hawaii, on our own piece of Paradise.
With the views of the Ocean & Mauna Kea mountain from the lanai.
The very best views, tho are from your private balcony above the rushing waters of the Makea Stream. We call it a river, as it is 30-50 feet wide, in the wading and swimming holes, below the waterfalls (of course). You could spend your whole vacation here, swimming, hiking, and resting or adventuring.
On six acres of farm land, we have a little working/petting farm; with a mini horse, Electra, 20+ tame goats, 2 cuddly barn cats and several chickens and their eggs to gather.
We also have a lovey dog, Buddy, a Belgian Shepherd, he will bark at you,
at first; then remember you must be old friends.
And, of course, our two granddaughters who spend occasional weekends with grandma and grandpa; they should be listed with farm animals, I recon.
Feel free to collect fruit, in season from our orchard of lychee, mango, avocado, star fruit, bananas and many others including the best melt in your mouth white pineapple ever to be imagined!
Your private, separate guest suite, has 3 rooms; a bedroom, bathroom, and a living room/kitchenette. It is off the large lanai, which separates it from the main part of the house, where trade winds coming in from the ocean provide a comfortable breeze; and where the BBQ, with burner, and large dining table with 6 rocking chairs are.
The bedroom has a brass queen size bed, ample storage and closet. Your bathroom has shower and washer and dryer. The main room has a sleeper sofa and a loveseat, satellite TV, and a kitchenette, with all new refrigerator, coffee pot, blender, juicer, microwave, hot plate and convection toaster/oven. I have dishes, coffee, tea, paper towels, rice (and a small rice cooker) some spices and other things to get you started.
We are located 11 miles north of Hilo, at the end of the "Scenic Route" where the botanical gardens, and breathtaking Onemea Bay are; and north of Honoli'i beach and surf spot, where Puff the Magic Dragon hangs out. Around us are acres of corn and purple potato fields. With nice side roads for peaceful and scenic walks, you can check out the cliffs and bays of the ocean, right in front of us; as ocean front is public land. Our own road is the back road to the scenic and quaint town of Honomu, with artsty gift stores, ice cream and bakery shops. You will want to drive around to go thru Honomu, and up to Akaka Falls, a brisk hike up and down stairs to a stunning waterfall.

About Karen Greene
After "retiring" to Hawaii over ten years ago, from construction and teaching, in Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Florida, Calif, etc.. we have finally (mostly) completed our dream home in our own piece of paradise. We enjoy working outside on the property, in the orchard, trees, and the river; tending to our dogs and barn pets, and spending time with our granddaughters, and their mom. Tim enjoys some horseshoes in the front yard, occasionally, and playing in the state tournaments in Hilo. He is always building, pruning, mowing and then admiring his views. Karen keeps busy with flowers, animals, and my studio/workshop under the house; where I have set up my little stations, for potting, painting, woodwork repairs, stained glass, and pottery, which we fire in the big gas kiln.
Karen Greene purchased this Farmhouse in 2013
Why Karen Greene chose Island of Hawaiʻi
When we first came to Hawaii we drove around the island, saw a FOR SALE sign along the highway and drove around the area. We noticed a swimming hole in the stream from Old Railroad Way, and made our way through the 10' tall cane grass to the stream, and said, "This is it!!!" 'IT' was already SOLD, and in escrow, but Karen kept calling the realtor until he said, "Good News Mr & Mrs Greene! Bring the money today!" So, we like to say, "God lead us here". That was 2 weeks after we had arrived, over 13 years ago. We bought another house, in Hawaiian Acres which we remodeled and had 2 vacation rental rooms, under the name "Country Gardens on the Old Volcano Trail". We decided to sell that house so we could put our time into our dream property... So, Tim built a hut, 30' above the lower swimming hole, and there we lived for over a year as he built the house, and Karen babysat our baby granddaughter...fun times, fun times. We have had many friends and family visit, and now we are ready to add you to our friend (or maybe even family) list.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Its all about the river. We love the river, it is cool under the African tulip trees, and the rush of water splashing over and around the rocks takes you to another world. There is no noise above the rush of the river. A dam, built during sugar cane farming times, widens the stream, and causes it to divide in many directions. Tim planned the guest suite to be right above that view. One can sit on the balcony for hours watching and being buried in the sound and sights of the cascading water and birds chirping. People drive here to go for walks through our area, down to the ocean, and up to Honomu, the town time forgot, on the way to Akaka Falls, and an amazing Zip-Line experience. They will stop on their walk to take pictures of our flowers, and animals and the view of the ocean from the road. We feel exceptionally blessed. And so will you!

Heaven on earth. Absolutely wonderful.
Beautiful and peaceful!
We really enjoyed our stay here. The lovely waterfall going through the property was so peaceful. The Lani was so comfortable to sit on and relax while listing to the waterfall and looking at all the beautiful trees, bushes and flowers. The house was very nice with a very comfortable bed! I loved this part of the Island. It is so lush in this part. This place is so close to many places to see in Hilo and the surrounding area. I love the little scenic road on the way to the Botanical Gardens. Such a beautiful area!!! I also loved their dog Buddy and feeding all the animals in the morning. Thanks to the wonderful Host for having such a pleasant place to share with others!
Beautiful environment. Great amenities and hosts were helpful and informative about the Hilo area. Loved our stay and plan to return.
Just what I wanted it to be, and better!!
This little slice of heaven has much greater appeal than advertised. I spent my mornings on the back deck having coffee overlooking a waterfall, and enjoying this meticulously well cared for property. The inside living area was just as beautiful, finely decorated and extreme comfort. I was treated to farm raised honey, papayas, oranges, eggs and delightfully friendly conversation. This one is a can't miss!!!! Thank You to my hosts for a wonderful experience!!
Wonderful place to stay!
Perfect for our vacation needs, peaceful and quiet. Loved it!
Should have stayed longer
My wife and I bounced around the Big Island; Kona, Kapaa, and Hilo area. Flower Hill was a real treat. The pictures on VRBO don't do this place justice, it is beautiful. The accommodations itself is more like a home; large, great Lanai, washer/dryer. Yes, it's the rainy side, but so lush and beautiful, we prefer it to Kona. One of the best things here is the hosts. So warm, generous, and friendly. If we come back to the island we'll stay at Flower Hill longer.
Thanks for the nice review, I know you’ll be back someday. We will see you then. Karen and Tim.
We are out in Hawaiian country, the beauty of the ocean, mountain, and your own river are the main attraction. We are 3 miles from the botanical garden, on the scenic route, on the spectacular Onemea Bay. Which we can guide to the walking path, directly to the ocean in the bay. There are ziplines, waterfalls, and beach parks within miles; and more all over the island.
