About the property

4 bedroom house looking down to the lake, and a large boathouse on the lake

Lake Summit,

First of all the house's name is "Top of the World". Its a charming lake cabin with a huge boathouse for entertaining. Wake up to the sun shining on the far end of the lake and see the campers at Camp Mondamin running around like an ant hill. The vast lake and mountain view is quite spectacular. Throw some bird seed out for much closer views and enjoyment of the many varieties of bird life. Often when you are through a day of water sports on the lake and thought the sun has set, the sun will bounce off the bottom of the clouds and turn the whole lake like gold. What a sight! Another special gift from the views of the house.

The house itself has 3 bedrooms/2 baths on the main floor and another bedroom/bath in the basement with twin beds that the children love so they can get away from their parents (or at least that is what we tell them). The main floor bedrooms are along the back hallway. The master has a king, a walk in closet and a private bath. The other two bedrooms have a double and a king respectively with a bathroom in between.

The main floor is an open floor plan with knotty pine walls, beamed ceilings, comfortable furniture and an original working wood fireplace (fire wood provided). There is also A/C on those occasional hot nights. The cook(s) can see and still converse with the rest of the crowd while cooking. The main dining table seats 6 and another game table can seat another 6.

The western facing living room and deck are perfect for that early morning coffee or tea. The high altitude means almost total freedom from bugs and mosquitoes while you have that cocktail before and/or after supper.

The boathouse is a large two story structure with the full upper floor level built over the two bottom boat slips. The boathouse setting is so pleasant we often pack up our meals and spend the whole day down there. Its a great place for a get together which can seat 12 at the two tables. The boathouse does have its own full size refrigerator, a stove, and plenty of cabinet and counter space. You must bring down your potable water but there is a pump into the cool and clear lake fed from the beautiful waterfall and stream coming from right behind the boathouse. There is a private port-a-potty on the boat slip level. The boathouse is also a great place to swim, paddle or float from. This lake, beside a few occasional weekends, stays pretty calm and un hurried. There is a hide-a-bed sofa for those lazy afternoon siestas. Its a great place to put down your tablet or phone, talk to each other, play cards, or just read a good book . We will provide the books and the cards if needed.

There is great fishing, canoeing, and all sports involving boating. You may bring your own boat and dock in the empty boat slip provided. Arrangements must be made ahead of time and a boat registration fee of $50 to the Lake Summit Association and proof of insurance will be needed. Prime fishing is found on this lake but you will need a current NC fishing license even when fishing from the dock. This can be done on-line.

There are many activities to do nearby: The Flat Rock Playhouse, The Biltmore House in Asheville, Chimney Rock at Lake Lure, Many hiking trails and waterfalls, river rafting or stream fishing. The whole area is a mecca for summer camps, three on Lake Summit itself. Its a great place to stay before, during, or after dropping off the kids. Who says they get to have all the fun!

For our Horse lovers, you will find an easy commute to the new Tryon International Equestrian Center. Its about 20 minutes down the mountain on I-26 and Hwy 74. But come back to the comfort of the cabin in the evenings and get out of the heat from the lower altitude of the Piedmont. Always a good 10 degrees cooler coming back up to the mountain and lake views!

Wonderful Mountain Get-Away

  • 4 of 5

Our family had the best time at Lake Summitt - and the dogs had the best time of all! The cottage was charming, comfortable and very clean. We had everything we needed! Each day we had breakfasts on the outdoor patio overlooking the lake, picnic lunches at the boathouse with swimming, floating and skiing before and after and dinner in Saluda at The Purple Onion - with our dogs! We can't wait to go back!

The BEST house on Lake Summit!

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed staying at the Smith's house so much that we will be back for sure this summer! We are actually considering 2 weeks this time! The house is perfect size with 2 King bedrooms, making it ideal for our friends to come up for the weekend from Clemson and bring their children too. The house boasts the best view on the lake. I promise you have not seen one like it! We were even able to bring our small well-behaved dogs with us, and they absolutely loved swimming in the lake. I can't say enough about this gem of a rental house!

Perfect family vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I look forward to staying in this house every year. It has the most amazing view of the lake, which we enjoy on the porch drinking coffee in the rockers every morning before heading down to the boathouse for the day.

The boathouse is the perfect place to relax with a good book or swim, play cards, go out in the boat (the boathouse has a slip so we bring ours every year). There is also plenty to do in The surrounding areas (Asheville is only 30 minutes away) if you ever can peel yourself away from the serenity of the lake.

I am already excited thinking about my next week in August when I get to return to my happy place!!!

A little piece of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

The best long weekend we had in years! Wish we had more time for a longer visit, but will next year. Waking up to the view of the lake and mountain ranges was breathtaking and the perfect way to start your day on the deck with coffee! We hardly said a word to each other while enjoying the peace.

The boathouse was the best for the children's entertainment, rain or shine. They slept well every night after swimming, jumping, and playing in the stream.

This will definitely be our primary vacation spot next summer.
