About Mary Louise Parks

Hi,

I'm Mary. My husband Ed and I have been living in Charlotte 22 years. We were transferred here with Ed's job. We loved it so much that when they wanted us to move he found another job. We actually built Cats Pause with lots of hands on work.

I am a quilter and the Quilt Block that is on the front of the house is called Puss in the Corner. Ed gave it to me for Christmas last year an I knew right away where it needed to live.

I love to cook and visit with friends so the kitchen reflects that. We don't just have just the basics but lots of things that make every meal fun.

I am a reader, especially of cat themed books so we keep lots of books, games, cards and puzzles for guests of every age.

My favorite place to read is in a hammock. We have purchased one and I am going up next week to hang it.

My very favorite thing is cats. I love shopping for new fun cat stuff. Rainy day activities for kids can include counting how many cats they can find at Cats Pause.

I used to think I wanted a Bed and Breakfast but now I know I like to give guest a nice, well equipped kitchen and let you cook your own breakfast. That way I can sleep in!

I almost always come up from Charlotte to get everything ready for you. We have lots of return visitors and folks who come every year. They have become friends as well as customers. You may find me there getting ready for your arrival. I look forward to meeting you..

Mary Louise Parks purchased this cabin in 1992

Why Mary Louise Parks chose Boone

Ed and I used to own three log homes. You may have stayed with us before. Our first one was named Parks Place. It was in Misty Mountain. It was decorated with a duck theme. The second was Utter Delight it was in Heritage Ridge about a mile from Pause. You just have to know it was done in cows!! One day as I was driving to Utter Delight I saw that there was a lot for sale on Buff Ridge Rd. I couldn't believe my eyes. Why would anyone sell a lot with the most beautiful lot in the world? But they did and after much hard work and many adventures it became Cats Pause. Pictures can not do the view justice. Any time of the year you can enjoy the serene sounds of the wind through the trees and the the view from inside or outside. We even had the deck lowered so it would not interfere with the view from the main floor. As we are not as young as we once were we sold Parks Place and Utter Delight to concentrate on Cats Pause.

What makes this cabin unique

Cats Pause is at the end of a private road that is shared with three other homes. Guests say it is in the middle of everything and away from everything. There is almost always a cool breeze coming from the valley. Access to the Blue Ridge Parkway is less than a mile away. The parkway takes you to lots of wonderful places. Blowing Rock is about 15 min if you hurry but don't. There are three wonderful overlooks that need to be seen before you get to BR. If there is a storm in the valley it is a must see. Blowing Rock has loads of restaurants, shops a great museum and don't miss the Tanner Outlet Mall. Art In The Park is a juried art and craft show in the BR Park and all these wonderful things are for sale. Check the Chamber Of Commerce for current dates.

If you want an active vacation we have skiing, whitewater rafting, numerous hiking trails for every skill levels, kayaking, tubing, horseback riding, golf, tennis, fishing , mountain biking & ziplining . We have information about all of these at Pause.

Take the Parkway north to Grandfather Mountain. Enjoy picnicking, the mile high swinging bridge, a native wildlife area, gift shop and a underwater observation area.

Boone is about 15 minutes the other way. It is a busy collage town. All the big box stores are here and all your fast food favorites. All the big grocery stores plus the summer farmers market. It shares the Daniel Boone Native Garden with The Living History Museum where The Horn in the West, a live performance of historical events is performed in the Summer. There are tons of great things to do a little further out and they are worth the drive. Grandfather Mountain is about 35min on the Blue Ridge Parkway and getting there is half the fun in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Roll the windows down and smell the fresh mountain air.

It doesn't get any better!

  • 5 of 5

This is our fifth stay at this remarkable home. Each year there have been updates to the house and grounds, but the view, the peace, and the comfort remain the same. We have enjoyed it by ourselves and we have had the house full of friends. Either way, it's almost heaven!

Purrfectly Exceptional!

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed our week at Cats Pause. This home provided every single thing that we look for in a vacation rental and much more. Located between Boone & Blowing Rock in a nice, quiet, neighborhood with paved roads, it was ideal for exploring all that the area has to offer. Access to the Blue Ridge Parkway was literally around the corner! We spent many quiet moments enjoying the spacious deck and long-range views which were equally visible from inside the home. The interior was very clean and comfortable with all the little extras you would expect in a fine home. The queen beds were outstanding, bathrooms & linens more than adequate, kitchen spacious & fully equipped, and the main floor living/dining area large and very comfortably furnished. Although we did not use the lower level, it is spacious and perfect for another couple or a place for the younger ones to call their own. A delightful surprise, neighbor Ruby greeted us with a hand-picked bouquet of dahlias our first day there. Mary told us that such neighbors are the best thing about the mountains and Ruby's beautiful smile said it all. Mary was a wonderful host, providing us with everything we needed for a delightful stay and always a phone call or text away to answer any questions. She also provided a basket of brochures and the most complete notebook of local information we have ever come across in a vacation rental. We will happily stay here again and thank Mary for generously sharing her beautiful home with us. It is experiences like this that keep us traveling through VRBO!

Who Could Ask for Anything More!

  • 5 of 5

This property is everything that is advertised, plus much more! The view is incredible. The location, half way between Boone and Blowing Rock, is ideal. Easy access and plenty of parking contribute to making this house very desirable,

The owners are responsive and pleasant to work with. The kitchen is equipped like a home - not a rental property. This year we were surprised by many upgrades, including new kitchen appliances and remodeled bathrooms.

The house is great, but my favorite part of this property is the deck! The furniture is comfortable and sturdy, and the cool air and the views are heavenly. In the early morning the sunrise is spectacular. In the afternoon, it is the perfect place to read. Then in the evening, we enjoy outdoor dining and conversation and laughter with family and friends.

The surrounding towns offer fine dining, great shopping, activities for children, beautiful trails, live theater, music performances of many genres and educational opportunities. But the house is so comfortable, that you may want to just stay there and relax.

This year, we actually needed to turn on gas logs in August - a treat for us!

Beautiful mountain view

  • 4 of 5

Our first stay at this home dedicated to all things Cat. It was relaxing and close to Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our hosts were exceptionally accommodating and the home was clean and welcoming. It was just the two of us, but the home comfortably sleeps 6 in three large bedrooms. We would definitely consider renting here again if we return to the area.

The Perfect Location!!!

  • 5 of 5

The view is magnificent. The location is perfect! The decks are spacious. The inside of the home is beautiful and very comfortable. I loved looking at the mountains from the master bedroom. The home is well stocked. The appliances are in excellent condition. Mary and her husband are attentive and very helpful. Her neighbor brought me fresh flowers from her garden on 2 occasions. I could not have been happier. There was nothing lacking We hiked the trails and ate well. Restaurants are plentiful. We are very health conscious and managed to find delicious healthy foods. I danced at the farmers market, got a fresh variety of yummy food, and was very happy with the friendly folks everywhere. Except for getting lost while searching for some of the trails (need a map) it was the perfect trip. thank you so much for generously sharing your beautiful home. it doesn't get much better then this. There is a book at Cats Pause that gives a wealth of information about the history of the area and the people who made it happen. There is information on golf, hiking, tennis, white water rafting, swimming, fishing, tubing, skiing, snowboarding, dinning, shopping and exploring. The phone numbers, hours of operation and costs are given. There is a basket of the fliers from the local attractions in the great room. I have just come from the High Country Visitors and have up to date information regarding whats happening now. It is waiting for you at Cats Pause.

No visit is complete without a visit to Grandfather Mountain. The views are outstanding. There are wildlife viewing areas for Black Bear. Each enclosure has information signs giving all the information about them. Any time we have been there several bears are out doing bear things. It is easy to get great photos. There are eagles and a Carolina Mountain Lion. There is an Otter habitat where you can watch the Otters under water. There is a welcome center with displays of local birds and plants. There is a movie theatre with films about our area. There is a gift shop and restaurant. The mile high swinging bridge is not as scary as it sounds and offers out of this world views. Well worth the drive. Use the Blew Ridge Parkway. Stop at the viewing spots and getting there is half the fun.
