About the Property
Villa sleeps 9; 4 bedrooms, 3 upstairs, 1 main floor; 3 full baths; pool
Sunshine Villa is part of an enclave of 19 villas in Union Pier that share an association swimming pool. The construction is new and when the architects of Pier 19 Villas designed the houses they did so that each villa though connected is private from the others.
Address: 16032 Goodwin, Union Pier, MI 49192
Sunshine Villa is a 2-storied attached house, with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths; private flagstone courtyard with Adirondack chairs around a fire pit; a picnic table; a small bistro table and chairs. It sleeps 9.
Sunshine Villa is in Union Pier, Michigan on the lake side of Red Arrow Highway. It is a few miles from downtown New Buffalo and less than a block to Union Pier Village.
There are 3 beaches close by to chose from: Miller Beach is 528 feet to Lake Michigan; Berrien Beach (without any stairs-just a slope of sand) and McKinley Beach are 3 & 2 blocks away respectively.
The story of The Sunshine Villa starts with the story of a woman who went to Union Pier every year of her childhood. And then stopped going for many years. Once she had grandchildren she realized she wanted to give them the gift of a cottage that she had as a child. She felt she needed that sense of a cottage to be happy. So she returned to Union Pier. And last year she bought herself and her children Sunshine Villa—a place to be happy together at.
For now, in her life, maybe like your life, she has too many commitments to spend all summer here, so she wants to share Sunshine Villa with your family. A lake place for you to visit and revisit year after year making memories for your children and grandchildren until that time you too feel compelled to buy your own cottage. It starts with needing a sense of cottage around you. You will find that here.
3 bedrooms upstairs; 1 bedroom downstairs.
3 full baths; two upstairs; one downstairs
• The master bedroom: king size bed; private bath with walk-in shower
• A private deck with café table and chairs for sharing a cup of coffee in solitude in the morning sun.
• The children’s room: bunk beds plus a trundle (sleeps 3)
• The other guest room; queen size bed.
• Both guest bedrooms share the 2nd bathroom on the 2nd floor (tub & shower)
The first floor bedroom: trundle bed that pulls out to sleep two people comfortably. Those guests use the 3rd bathroom on the main floor.
The Great Room
The first floor is almost entirely a Great Room that stretches out under a cathedral ceiling to include the kitchen, its island, the living room and dining room. The fireplace divides the Great Room from the dining room area which overlooks the courtyard. Multiple windows, high and low spread the sun light throughout the Villa—thus the name Sunshine Villa.
What a relief! While the décor is certainly done in the cottage vernacular, thanks to the good taste of the woman who owns the Sunshine Villa, there is no clutter nor too many cutesy signs or pillows strewn about. The furniture is a mix of Crate and Barrel quality sofa and chairs and found objects repurposed. An example I like is a small dresser drawer converted into a whimsical container to hold silverware. All the china matches! All the pots and pans are new of a matching set. The order and newness makes me want to go home toss out the old and buy a new set of perfectly matching kitchen everything!
Linens and towels are provided and are of high cotton count. And the towels are thick enough to actually dry you!
The Sunshine Villa has its own private flagstone courtyard with a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs for telling ghost stories and roasting marshmallows. The courtyard is partially fenced and additionally screened with significant landscaping to give a sense of openness but privacy as well. It has a bistro table and chairs and a picnic table for outdoor dining.
The in-ground, heated swimming pool is on the backside of The Villa. is 30’ wide x 40’long. It is shallow at one end; 10’ deep at the other end. Beautifully landscaped and private to just the other Villas of the association.
A. BARNEY’S. In New Buffalo; good for everything; open Sunday to 9pm; Friday and Saturday until 10 pm.
B. SAWYER GARDEN MARKET. In downtown Sawyer, 7 miles north of Union Pier up Red Arrow Highway. A must to visit. Good variety of fresh produce; huge inventory of things for the home and garden; bit pricey, but good for one-stop fruit & veggie shopping.
C. FALATICS. Family-owned fresh meat market on Red Arrow Highway, 2 miles north of the light at Sawyer Road. Great brats, smoked sausage and expensive frozen pies. Pricey, but popular.
D. DRIER’S MEAT MARKET. Located in 3 Oaks, a scenic 6 mile drive from Lakeside. Take Lakeside Rd south (away from the lake) to Warren Woods Rd; left on Warren Woods to 3 Oaks road; right to downtown 3 Oaks. Stick to the speed limit in town! Drier’s is across the tracks on the right; easy to miss. Family owned and iconic meat market. Son of the owner is a heart-throb, but happily married. The town is worth exploring. Check out the local move theater right before the tracks on the left as you come into town.
E. FROEHLICH’S. Also in 3 Oaks, on left just as you enter the downtown. Owner-run shop that’s great for a lunch of fresh salads, hand-made sandwiches, or take home soups, jams, pies, breads, etc. Limited seating inside, more out. Also some of the kitchen and decorative items on sale are quite interesting.
F. FARMER’S MARKETS. Weekends only and “real” farmers. One is located at “Skip’s Other Place” on Red Arrow Highway about 2 miles “south” of Union Pier on the way to New Buffalo; open Saturday & Sunday & Monday if a holiday (Memorial and Labor Days). Sell plants as well as food. 2nd farmer’s market is located in 3 Oaks just over the tracks on the left; smaller, and only open Saturdays.
G. ROADSIDE STANDS. Located in various places on Red Arrow Highway and Route 12. There are also 2 “pick your own” blueberry farms: Mike’s in New Buffalo, and one toward the lake at Sawyer Road. Ask locally for directions. The usual season is late July, early August.
H. PICK UP ITEMS.
a. The “Whistle Stop” located next to the Roadhouse sells good coffee, pricey but interesting baked goods, deli and hand-made, tasty sandwiches. Also milk, etc.
J. NANI’S On Red Arrow Highway, east side. Muffins, egg sandwiches, coffee. Excellent. New in 2013
K. LOUISE’S CAFÉ & BAKERY (The Swedish Bakery) Located in Harbert on west side of Red Arrow Highway . Still bakes “soft Swedish” goodies. Also good place for breakfast & lunch.
A. ICE CREAM: “OINK’S” Best in the area, and well worth the trip. In New Buffalo (stay on Red Arrow/Rte 12, go thru the light in town, located on the left about ¼ mile past the light). Very popular but service is fast despite the crowd.
B. RED ARROW “ROADHOUSE”. Probably the most popular restaurant in the area; located just ½ mile “south” of Lakeside Road on Red Arrow Highway. No reservations; always crowded after 6:30pm. Closes its kitchens around 9:30pm. Open for lunch on weekends. Fast, good service, good specials; pretty inventive menu, plus standard fare. Four or five draft beers available.
C. CASEY’S BAR. In New Buffalo; turn right at the light, located near the tracks on the left (“south”). Will take reservations (269 469 5800). It’s a bar with a good bar menu and good seating. Has an outdoor patio. Also crowded in summer, but less so than the Roadhouse.
D. LOUISA’S CAFÉ & BAKERY. Located in Harbert on west side of RAH about 2 ½ miles “north” of Lakeside Road, on RAH (at the junction of RAH and Harbert Road). The old “Swedish Bakery”; the new chef and her menu are very good. Breakfast and Lunch only as of this date; no reservations.
E. REDAMACK’S. THE place for hamburgers. On Red Arrow/Route 12 in downtown New Buffalo. No reservations and no nonsense operation, w/ fast, friendly service, and lots of tables. Despite this, expect to wait for 10 to 15 minutes unless you go early. Lots of draft beer, games for children and a fun atmosphere. Not everyone’s idea of a good meal, but most people keep coming back.
F. THE STRAY DOG. In New Buffalo toward the lake, a bit past the tracks on the right. Good menu and good bar, lots of seating (with upstairs outdoor patio). Similar to Casey’s but livelier atmosphere and more fun for kids.
G. BENTWOOD. Located in the Harbor Grand Hotel in New Buffalo. It’s on the H. GREENBUSH BREWERY. Just over the tracks in Sawyer, on the left. Rustic atmosphere; only open a year, but already popular despite still being a work in progress. Good selection of good brews; “slowly expanding” menu of appetizers, soups and sandwiches. Noon to 10pm on Fri and Sat; noon to 9pm Sun to Thursday. No reservations.
I. FITZGERALD’S. Also in Sawyer, next to the Brewery, separated by an outdoor dining area. Open for lunch and dinner, 7 days, from noon to 9pm weekdays, and til 10 on weekends. On smallish side, good bar and menu. Shares parking lot w/ the Sawyer Market, a good place for fresh produce and lots of other stuff. They take reservations (269 426 3489).
J. TIMOTHY’S. Located in the Grand Beach Hotel in Union Pier. A bit more upscale and noted for its fish dishes; also for a noise level at the upper limit
