Quiet Summer Getaway
This location was perfect for quiet time alone with the family. After spending the day at the beaches, shops, or restaurants, we would come back here for cocktails and sunsets. The trees and ravines on either side made it so we never saw our neighbors and were on our own little peninsula.
Screened porch was perfect for coffee in the morning and puzzles in the evening.
Watching the sunset was a nightly event. whether from the screened porch, the bluff, the beach, or the hidden spot up on the ridge.
Beautiful view, great decks, great secluded location!
I will start with the pros: Beautiful view of the lake, secluded home with trees all around, short walk across the yard and down steps to the lake, very relaxing atmosphere. Great community room to hang out with friends in front of the fireplace upstairs, great kitchen area to play games and snack at the table with fireplace. Good layout of home, great decks, kitchen well stocked with and had nice appliances.
Cons: Need to purchase a new mattress in the 3rd small bedroom, power was out one night when we returned, generator did not kick on, nobody called me back when I left a message on the emergency phone number. Luckily our guys were able to get the generator going. Home was hard to find, might want to mark it a little better. Check with cleaning crew, we found dirty socks under a throw pillow on couch upstairs. Cleaning crew should always move pillows and should be vacuuming couches anyway. There were many spiders and cobwebs in bedrooms, t'is the season for spiders, so we understand, but cleaning crew should be wiping or dusting down ceiling corners and edges.
To end on a positive note, we had an excellent time there, house was set up very nice with beautiful views, even of the cold, crashing waves of lake MI!
Simple and rustic accommodations. Weather wasn't good which kept us inside most of the weekend. Main room comfortably accommodated 4 people, which is where we spent most of our time, in front of a nice fire.
Happy to hear you were able to make the best out of a gloomy weekend. Rainy weather is not our favorite either.. we hope you can come back and enjoy the Saugatuck/Douglas area on a sunnier weekend!
Great out. Great Beach. Keep an eye on little ones.
First, I must say, Barbara & Mista were great. I booked the wrong dates and they were able to change them within an hour. They provided useful information on what to bring, what not to bring etc. They allowed for an early check-in and for my aunt to pick up the keys because we were still traveling there.
While the house isn't super up to date, it was extremely clean. It’s more of a cabin than a ritzy house, which is exactly what we were looking for. All the rooms were super comfortable. Beds, sheets, blankets, etc. were clean and inviting. Carpet was pretty dates but that just made it feel more lake house like IMO. We brought two kids (3 and newborn) and we felt comfortable letting them roam around the house.
Letting our kids/dog roam and play freely around the land however was another thing. The land is next to a ravine/eroded land on one side of the house. It's a good 20-30ft drop down so we had to be extra careful with our dog and son. My father in-law made a joke that our dog would know not to go close. He was wrong. Our dog fell about 15ft down and bloodied up his nose. Toward the lake there are two paths, one that leads to a 50-60FT cliff/eroded sand. The second path goes to the beach and has stairs, which was great. Easy to get up and down (the stairs). Though, when the beach meets the stairs, they could make the transition easier. There were rocks to ease the transition but they were lose and difficult to manage. The neighbor made stairs for theirs (recommendation for owner).
The beach is really what make this place awesome. It's pretty much a private beach all to yourself. There is a neighbor that has access as well but they weren't around. My son loved playing in the water and skipping rock. Sunset was great as it faces west.
As my wife said after leaving this cabin, "I feel so relaxed". This place is great. We will more than likely try to get back. However, it's not a 5 out of 5 just because of the dangerous ravines/cliffs. If I were the owner, this could be easily mitigated if there were some barn fencing/bottom half mesh, to deter the curious 3 year old from looking over the edge. If it were safer we would probably book this place 6x a year for the next 50 years :) (only kind of kidding)
Overall though super happy with our experience. I would give it at 4.9 out of 5 if I could
Bonus: it's in between Saugatuck and South Haven. There is a farm .3 miles that has fresh veg and fruit as well.
