Stay a week or stay a month. Enjoy the hot tub and the view and the peaceful days and nights alone or with your family!

Make a lifetime of vacation memories at 'Mama Bear' at Bear Lake. Amazing view of Lake and Mountains. Fish for trout or small mouth bass, enjoy the view from hot tub and large decks, shoot some pool, or just watch the leaves change color. This summer families have enjoyed kayaking, hiking to creeks and waterfalls, fishing, gem mining and much more! Enjoy 200 feet of shoreline, and private boat dock near the public boat access. Bring your boat and tour the waterfalls. Part of the Nantahala National Forest.

'Mama Bear', a remodeled older home(circa 1980's), is only a short drive to Sylva, Dillsboro, Cashiers, and Highlands. There are many fun things to do in Cherokee; and Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood are excellent 1 day excursions. Drive to Cataloochee and see the Elk or see a show at the Cherokee Casino. Call Western Carolina University to check the entertainment schedule and plan to catch a concert, play, athletic event, or craft show there. Mountain Heritage Day, held the last Saturday in September, is always a great reason to visit the area.

Perfect getaway for a family. What a wonderful place for the whole family to share Thanksgiving or Christmas together. Sleeping includes 2 King beds, 2 Queen beds, 1 sleeper sofa. There are 2 Rock Gas-Log Fireplaces.

About Will Mayse

We purchased this home because of the view in 2005. Mama Bear was built in 1985 and needed some upgrades. While we have already done many remodeling projects at Mama Bear, we look forward to being able to upgrade & complete more projects in the future. We look forward to enjoying relaxing days there in the future. We live 20 minutes from Bear Lake and are thankful each time we read the guest book and see that other families have enjoyed staying at Mama Bear.

Will Mayse purchased this house in 2005

Why Will Mayse chose Smoky Mountains

We chose to buy a vacation rental in this location because of the amazing view! We enjoy the peace and quiet, the beautiful lake, the mountains that change with each season, and the wildlife we've seen while canoeing. We also liked it's rustic charm....this is NOT an upscale home.

What makes this house unique

We've enjoyed watching beavers, osprey, and skunk :), catching walleye & large mouth bass, roasting marshmallows, hot-tubbing, canoeing, and just enjoying the quiet at Mama Bear.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a beautiful spot---can't beat the view we woke up to in the mornings. Nothing better than snuggling up by the fire playing games with good friends or warming up in the hot tub. We'd love to to it all again.

Nice, clean house when you walk in and a beautiful view of the lake on the back porch. Canoes, paddle boards, hot tub, pool table, all in great condition for recreation. Highly recommended for peace and quiet or a fun week/weekend with the squad!

Renters BEWARE! Nighmare property. RATS, Roaches and that's only the beginning

  • 1 of 5

I rented this property for the month of July, 2017. It was the most horrific experience of my life. First let me say the house should be torn down. The owner's are not interested assisting with problems. When we reported the indisputable evidence of rodents and roaches to the owner. Their answer was to send over a freind who went into the closet and pull out tiny rat traps filled with peanut butter...(they obviously had traps on hand which told me this was not the first time dealing with rats) What was I suppsed to do?...trap and discard rats. Huge 2 inch roaches everwhere. They never responded to my request to get an exterminator in..after all, I had 3 more weeks of vacation left there. They advertise and I was told the house had internet wifi and a landline phone, which was critical for us to have in order to communicate and work from the house. There is NO CELL service at this location. The wifi worked about 50% of the time..I would have to reset router, then it would work for a few more minutes only. The phone had so much static, it could not be used. I asked about it and they said Verison said there was no problem with there equipment and that the problem was inside the house..again the owner's lended no assistance or help. The sliding glass door onto the porch was installed backwards and would not lock nor could be wedged with a stick because it was backwards. So we had no security, could not lock the house at night or when we went out. We window coverings in the bedroom (looked out the front) only covered 2/3 of the window, so I had to put up a sheet in the window to be able to undress. (really? can't they even put up curtains that cover the glass window) All the window blinds in the family room and dining room pulled up in a broken, locked position and could not be felt creepy at night knowing we might be being watched. Trash all over the yard, melted plastic bottle on the grates of the grill (could not use). The pool table was thread bare-it had huge tears in the felt so it was unplayable. The air conditioning did not work...geez. what a nightmare. I was forced to vacate the property early and when demanded at least a refund for the nights not spent there, I was told NO- NO REFUNDS. The owners did offer me a small amount of money as compensation, it was my understanding.... only if a signed a contract stating I was not allow to leave a negative review on this site. wow, huh?

The moment we left Mama Bear we were already talking about when we will be returning!! From the very start of booking Tiffany was excellent in communcation and answering any questions I had. Spoke a few times on the phone, text, & email. She is the best! As, for the cabin....absoutely, met every need our group had. The VIEWS were outstanding and the cabin itself was packed with FUN goodies for us to venture off with on the lake. (we were able to bring our own jetskis) There is a pretty big walk for us FL people going up the stairs to return the toys but totally doable esp with two people and you feel great after the work out haha!!!.. The Cabin was beautiful and pretty much had everything you would need to stay in comfort.. plenty enough room for a big group..and tons of games..and just perfection!!! WE cannot wait to visit again. in our short stay we were able to travel short distanced to ziplining and pisgah national forest to visit Waterfalls.. but in all honesty the cabin and lake would of been just fine the entire trip. Thank you for providing such a great rental and we will most defintlely be back again!!!!!

Great refreshing getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We have had our worship retreat at Mama Bear Cabin for the past year- once in fall and once in spring. It has been amazing each time. The house is well kept, the view is stunning, and the things to do there are endless! I recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, refreshing getaway! We are looking forward to having many more events at the cabin! The owners are amazing and so easy to work with!
