Excellent location; nice accommodations

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here. We found the house perfectly located for all we wanted to do. It was just a few houses away from the tram stop--perfect for us. A delightful bakery was on the corner which we frequented.

One complaint would be that the house looked bare. For a house of this stature and price we expected a bit more grandeur. The furniture was sparse. There were nails in the walls that once held pictures. The pictures were gone but the nails remained. Without pictures the house seemed barren and sterile. I would have enjoyed seeing some pictures, even inexpensive reproductions, or mirrors, or even travel posters, on those nails, to warm the place a bit and make it more homey. We realize this is a rental, but it could be done up to present a more homey atmosphere.

The kitchen was a delight. It was a little shy of some utensils but otherwise it was a delightful kitchen. We had plenty of dishes and utensils and all were in good shape. We ate most of our breakfasts in, as well as several dinners. Having a useable kitchen was wonderful. We would have enjoyed having a microwave in the kitchen as well, but got along fine without one close-by. The kitchenette on the mid-level we did not use and would have liked having that microwave in the kitchen.

We enjoyed having a washer and dryer available. We traveled with children so being able to keep up on laundry allowed us to travel lighter.

My only other complaint was that some lights/light bulbs were burned out and not replaced. We did not feel comfortable trying to replace those bulbs. The most serious problems were in the steep circular stairwells, which were dark because bulbs were out. We would have liked all those lights to be working. Otherwise we were very happy with the house. There were plenty of linens for our use, and we were able to launder what we needed. We would rent this house again. As I said the location was perfect, and the house was perfect for a family. We enjoyed our stay here.

Great location; wonderful historic house

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed our 5-night stay in the Canal House. The location was great, with so many shops, restaurants, and even grocery a short walk away. And the canal is right out the window. Transit is very close to get to other parts of the city.

The house is just as shown in the property photos. Our family of four, with two college-age daughters, valued having two bathrooms plus a ground-floor toilet.

Marja and Peter were helpful in recommending nearby restaurants and sights.

Location, Location, Location!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived early and Peter was gracious enough to allow for an early check-in...Thank you Peter!

When we arrived, there was no hot water. Fortunately, Peter was able to correct the issue before it became a problem for us. He had recently had a new tankless water heater put in which just needed a quick "reset". Otherwise, the apartment was large with four separate bedrooms (two on the 3rd floor and two on the 4th floor), two full bathrooms with showers (3rd and 4th floors, plus one additional water closet on the 1st floor) and two kitchens on the1st and 3rd floors.

Since I was with three of my business partners we needed a large apartment with 4 separate bedrooms and at least 2.5 baths. This apartment met our needs with it's size, cleanliness and proximity to everything cool in Amsterdam. We enjoyed our stay here...Thank you!

Tries hard.

  • 3 of 5

We rented both apartments for a family of 4 in order to gain 2 bathrooms. The manager tries hard to please. We were able to drop luggage off on arrival even though the space was being cleaned. She provided fresh orange juice and had purchased flowers for our stay. Appliances work well and the kitchen is stocked with new dishes and a large refrigerator. Bath rooms (2.5) were new and very nice. The rooms that do not face the canal are comfortable with new sheets. The second floor sitting room is very comfortable and you can watch the folks walking on the canal. Property is located 2 minutes walk from tram that gets to to/from train station and museum areas. This is a big plus. Major shopping around the corner and that pleased my teens.

The property is a canal house thus it has a moldy smell in the back of the ground floor where the kitchen is located. The moldy smell is also located in the bedrooms that face the canal and the windows in one of the bedrooms cannot be opened. Note that you can avoid the mold smell if you use the back bedrooms and there is no issues with the bathrooms. We arrived during a heat wave and as typical of many places in the EU, there is not air conditioning and this property does not have fans. The property has numerous balconies and windows that provided cross breeze so it may not be an issue if you can live without air conditioning or the weather is the typical cooler Amsterdam weather. We had to keep the doors and windows opened for air so it was a bit noisy at night as one to two blocks over is an entertainment district and the night clubbers often woke us up around 2:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Space has the typical canal stair case thus spiral and narrow so you should be mobile and it may not be appropriate for young children.

Manager surprised us by asking for a 4% tourist tax in cash at check in. It would have been better to charge this at reservation so the full price of the stay is known.

Overall, we did have a good stay, the location is convenient and we saved vs. renting two rooms at a hotels. If they can get rid of the moldy smell, I would give it a 4 star rating.

Owner's Response: FIRST OF ALL: YOUR LAST SENTENCE OF YOUR REVIEW DID MENTION A **** 4 STARS RATING if the house did not have a certain smell and you were not obliged to pay the Tourist Tax at your arrival. These two things need to be analyzed: You did not mention in your review that you SUFFER FROM ALLERGY so your reaction is quite clear that the presence of my Dog Lexus at our Meet & Greet has given you a problem. Until now we didn't have had such a critic of a smell which actually has been completely disappeared. IN THE FUTURE I will not let the dog anymore into the house to avoid these problems. Also the day of your arrival it had been extremely hot: 32 degrees, a heath wave! SEcondly: your critic on the paying of the tourist tax is not reasonable as it has been mentioned in the offer in advance and on the invoice Homeaway Payment send to you: HOMEAWAY is actually working on the concept of getting it all inclusive in the near future. I from my side would very much have appreciate that you mentioned and paid € 45) for the 4 extra sheets and bath towels that had been taken from my private linen cupboard and that after control the house was quite in a state of disorder. I did not expect this negative attitude as you mentioned in your review our 'tries hard' intention to give you as our distinguished guests the warmest welcome possible: we even permitted you to check-in 4 hours before the official time at 11.30 hrs. CONCLUSION: you offered to change your rating in 4**** stars which seems to you reasonable as well but you did not succeeded!
