Oasis by the Wilderness

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

Two bedroom house, kitchenette, bathroom with shower in a beautiful setting

Country comfort in a two bedroom house, artfully decorated, in the green valley of the San Francisco River. Peaceful environment with lots of privacy. Our two acre spread has horses, a large organic garden, fruit trees, and my pottery studio with indoor and outdoor kilns and display of work produced. The Gila wilderness and the Mogollon Mountains come almost to our doorstep with their incredible variety of wildlife, and hot springs are nearby.

About Jude Wasechek

I am a full-time potter, and show my work in Silver City and several other galleries. When I'm not in my studio, I'm usually with my horses (and mule). My husband Peter is an amateur naturalist, gardener, and the town plumber.

Jude Wasechek purchased this house in 2001

Why Jude Wasechek chose New Mexico

This stretch of the San Francisco River is a hotspot of biodiversity, with good birding right from your porch. We have plentiful water for gardening, duck raising, and irrigating pasture. Two of our horses are Spanish Barbs, who are particularly well-suited to the desert. They belong to the Wilbur Cruce strain, found isolated in southern Arizona some decades ago.

What makes this house unique

We welcome guests at our occasional evening raku pottery firings, an outdoor event with a flair. More casual evenings are spent sitting by the bonfire or enjoying the stars.

The property was charming and well kept. We felt right at home!

Although we only stayed one night at the oasis, the atmosphere was wonderful. The cabin was very quaint and well-decorated with lovely art. We enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the hummingbirds and admiring the peaceful setting. We hope to return soon!

A True "Oasis in the Desert"

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful getaway at the base of the Gila mountains. Explore the old mining town of Moggollon, hike the Catwalk flume trail, soak in the Sanfrancisco Hot Springs, hike Mineral Creek, or just hang out at the property watching birds. Jude and Peter are excellent hosts, full of information and history about the area. The casita is wonderful with all the amenities you could want. If peace, quiet, and beauty are on your list....Stay Here!

Paradise in the Wilderness

  • 5 of 5

We have nothing but great things to say about our stay @ Running Horse. Jude and Peter made us feel very welcomed. They are a very sweet couple. I feel like we have made friends for life!

They provided every convenience needed. They even blessed us with Duck eggs and fresh vegetables from their garden. They are environmentally conscientious, composting and recycling on their property.

In years past we have stayed directly in Glenwood @ another establishment but we will definitely come and stay here instead in the future.

Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

Great location to explore this beautiful area of New Mexico. The owners (Peter and Jude) were great: introduced themselves to us upon arrival and made our stay very comfortable; friendly down to earth people. The rental is a separate building from the main house where the owners live. Very private and much larger than we were expecting. Has a covered porch with seating that overlooks the property. We spent a good deal of our time just relaxing on that porch; enjoying the humming birds and watching the horses. If you are looking for shopping malls and swimming pools, this is not the property for you. If you are looking to relax, see some wildlife and explore the outdoors this is the place for you. Thank you Peter and Jude.

This is a lush deep green river valley set at 4600' at the base of the west face of the Mogollon Mountains which rise up quickly to over 10,000'. Wilderness boundary close by. Migratory birds use this north-south river as a flyway, Sandhill Cranes spend the winter here. Irrigated pasture and organic garden, with horses, dogs, cats, ducks, and an incredible variety of wildlife passing through. Working art studio with raku kilns and pottery on display. The immediate area has great hiking opportunities, beautiful volcanic geology, dark skies for astronomers, archeological sites, hot springs, and a (relatively) mild climate year-round.
