Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, Brand New, Zen Bungalow - Stunning Views & Locatio

We bought and renovated our property in 2013 to be our luxury vacation home that would be comparable to staying at the Ko Olina (Where 1 bedrooms can be $600/night!). This apartment has everything and more. Beautiful open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. Family room with a 42" flat screen tv, incredible comfy sectional to curl up together after an amazing day at the beach. An oversized walk in shower with a pebble floor in a Zen bathroom. A Cal King Bed with duvet covers and a Novafoam (Gel Memory Foam) mattress make it perfect for a couple. Fully air conditioned, with cable TV and fast Wifi. (We are computer consultants, so we got the best.)

The view out of every window is breathtaking. You see ocean and mountains and coastline everywhere you turn. Make a cup of coffee and open up the sliding glass doors for the most amazing morning experience. Watch the sunlight creep over the mountain range and the swells make their way to the beaches.

The Makaha Valley Towers has everything you need for a perfect stay. The gated grounds are immaculate with peacocks strolling through the green spaces. It has a swimming pool, common area outdoor bbq's (no clean up!) and even a hose for car washes (Or to rinse off sandy feet. ). The residents, visitors and employees always are wonderful to "talk story" or just say "Aloha".

A short mile down the street and you will find what we feel is THE BEST BEACH ON OAHU. Makaha is an amazing white sand beach with great snorkeling or surfing if you are up for a challenge (we leave that to the experts...) The water is crystal clear and when you float with your toes pointing to the beach you see the towering Waianae mountain range.

Waianae is a very special place. A laid back community with "Old Hawaii" charm. There are grocery stores, drug stores, cute restaurants, and many secret beaches that most visitors to Oahu never have a chance to see. There is a wonderful local golf course a half mile away. And the Waianae boat harbor has fantastic dolphin and whale tours. We have a welcome book highlighting the best places to go right in the area.

Mahalo and Aloha!

Away from the busy parts of Oahu

  • 4 of 5

Our stay in this 10th floor condo was very pleasant. Everything was as described.

The condo was obviously recently remodeled, and it was well done.

This part of the island is somewhat remote from Honolulu, which suited us fine. The only drawback was the limited number of restaurants and grocery stores that are close by.

The peacocks that roam the property are beautiful.

Good First Impressing, but had some Shortcomings

  • 3 of 5

We checked into the Makaha Towers Unit at about 6pm, after experiencing some truly horrendous traffic from Honolulu Airport to Waianae (more on this later). Since the office was closed, I dropped my wife and our luggage at the elevator , and parked the car at the bottom of the hill, then up a very steep set of stairs and, after 3 tries found the right level (UL) where I had left her.

The view from the balcony of the Unit was totally gorgeous, no complaints there. There were 5 or 6 pheasants around which were really loud

Once we got into the unit, it appeared to be very nice, nicely decorated, with new appliances. However, when we checked the walk-in shower in the very nice bathroom, there was no place for soap, shampoo, or face cloths. 3 walls, 1 partial glass wall, and a floor. There was a towel hook near the shower that my wife had a hard time reaching. We tried just using the floor for 1 day, then went out and bought a shower caddy and 2 ice trays since there was only one small tray in the freezer.

On one day, the water in the unit was shut off from 9am to 1pm, and no hot water until that night.

There was a sectional couch in the living room with no coffee table or end table, so we ended up using a quite substantial ice cooler as an end table. There was one very strange lamp in the corner, on the floor, not really enough to read by. There was a nice desk and office chair, and since the couch was too low and soft for me, I used that chair the entire week.

Nice TV with many channels and a DVR, I appreciated that.

The most irritating problem was in the kitchen. There is no dining room, so, there were 2 ‘high-boy’ chairs to be used at one end of the island. Since my wife is only 4’10”, she had a difficult time getting into one of these. We also found that there were only 3 full-size plates, and 4 smaller plates, so I was doing dishes every night we didn’t go out.

Shopping was a chore. There was a Sack-and Save about 7 miles back down the road, and, frankly, I wasn’t impressed. We ended up doing our shopping at the Safeway in Kapolei, about 20 miles away (sign up for a Safeway card to save some serious money)

We found pretty quickly to try to stay away from H-1 West and Rte 93 at afternoon rush hour. Also, if you get back too late, like after 7pm, all the lower level parking spaces are full.

So, to sum up, it was an OK unit, but, we knew that we weren’t getting 5-star accommodations, and we dealth with the issues

Comfortable with a great view/location

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay in Hawaii, mostly due to the comfortable and very affordable condo we rented. The place was perfect for a couple and the views were amazing. We are looking forward to our next trip so we can stay here again. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the building we stayed in was experiencing water problems for half of our four-day stay which was super annoying and inconvenient.

Nice location, beach & hiking very close by. Great secure condo, everyone friendly & helpful.

  • 3 of 5

Nice modern condo with great wildlife from the peacocks to the local birds. Great place for exercise as buildings are on a slope with stairs to enter from parking areas. Golf course just down the street, very close. Condo had everything you could need, around the pool there were grills & picnic tables. Made many day trips away from the area to all around Oahu, north shore, polynesian cultural center, waikiki beach, downtown Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and many more locations, good area to use as a base. Not much traffic if you leave after commuter times. Would have been helpful to have a small guide as to the workings of TV and which remotes to use. I find many places offer a book to read on the ins and outs of the individual place you are renting, some even give insight into what there is to do and places to eat locally. We managed fine without, but this was our 3rd trip to Oahu and we are familiar with the area.

Great view and wonderful place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time while staying here. Makaha is a long ways out there, so this is a great place to stay if you are looking to get away from the hustle of Waikiki. The beaches are beautiful, there is a trail that is an amazing hike, and the property that the apartment is on is great. The peacocks can be loud at night, but you just need to close your doors.

Waianae does have a decent amount of tents and such on the beach, which does give it a bit of a appearance that would not be ideal for a lot of people, but after you get through Waianae and get into Makaha it clears up. We had no problems with the locals that some people have stated. I think that if your having issues it is probably something that you are doing. Again, unless you are looking to get away from a lot of the tourist traps and away from the chaos, this is probably not the best location for you. There are not a lot of eateries in the area either.

The only knock I'd have on this condo at Makaha Valley Towers are the patio doors. The do slide very hard, which I'd personally attribute to sand and the salty air. They could use some TLC though and would make it easier to close the doors when the peacocks are too loud in the night.

Had a great stay and would definitely stay again.

Nice Unit!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for our "real" honeymoon end of October 2016 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had no issues hearing peacocks as some others who stayed in other units have stated (maybe since this one is so high up?). This is definitely a honeymoon suite or for a couple. There's not much privacy with the sliding bathroom door and a sizable gap where you can see into and out of from the toilet, so you don't want to stay there with a pal or co-worker probably. We had problems figuring out the cable/satellite for TV but had enough fun things to do so weren't concerned enough about it to call the owners. We brought our own firestick anyway to stream movies, etc., when relaxing at night. There are so many beaches around there, you don't need to drive far to have your own stretch of beach. Strong currents on many of them, though, so be careful in the water. Overall this is a very nice place to stay with all the amenities and not far from Honolulu, and really not very far from even the north shore for a day trip.
