Cosy, traditional farmhouse cottage, Quiet location between Dingle and KiIlarney

Bedrooms 3
Space 250 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 5 nights

About the property

Wild Cherry Cottage has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and sleeps seven people

Wild Cherry Cottage is a completely original 19th century Irish cottage which has been lovingly and sympathetically renovated and completely restored in the last year or so. It comprises the original slate floors, wooden beams and original fireplace. It is situated in its own grounds of mixed shrubs, trees, lawn and woods, comprising just under an acre. It provides a perfect getaway from the noise and stress of modern city living, with birdsong abound. It also has a large enclosed garden and a section of woods where children can play happily and safely.

The cottage is located in a small hamlet on the lower slopes of the Slieve Mish mountains which provide the 'backbone' to the Dingle Peninsula. There are wonderful walks from the door of the cottage and there are views of Carrantoul, Ireland's highest mountain, and the Magillicuddy Reeks mountain range from the garden. However, civilization is not far away and Castlemaine, the local village, can provide a choice of four pubs, a restaurant and a few shops, a post office and a gym. Live music can be heard at the weekends. Killarney, the National Park and the Ring of Kerry is only 20 minutes drive away and Dingle town itself - a 35 min drive in the other direction - a perfect location for those who wish to experience both areas - and you Must!

The cottage itself exudes 'olde worlde' charm and has two large double bedrooms, one of which features a beautiful four poster bed that the owners had made whilst in Sri Lanka. The living room, with its large open fireplace, is a very cosy and comfortable place to spend the evenings and the conservatory is ideal for catching the morning sun and for eating in in the evening. A bright 'roomy' kitchen with a large rangemaster cooker , dishwasher and views over the garden completes the original part of the cottage. Next to that is the old attached stone 'cow shed' which has now been converted into two bathrooms and two further bedrooms. Both bathrooms have toilets and one boasts a bath whilst the other a shower.

About The Owner

My wife and I live just 3 miles away and are very familiar with this cottage as it has been in the family for many years and witnessed a large number of family gatherings and parties - it being ideally suited to this!

We both own and manage traditional cottages on the Dingle Peninsula and have been doing so for nearly 10 years. We love meeting our guests and sharing our knowledge of places to visit and things to do here. Having brought up our own seven children here on the peninsula, we know the best places to go and particularly thos that have a fascination for children of all ages.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1990

Why The Owner chose County Kerry

Wild Cherry Cottage was our family home where all of the children and grandchildren used to come and stay for long summer holidays and family events. It has been lovingly restored in recent years and has a wonderfullly large garden and outbuildings. It is a safe environment for children, the garden is fenced off and the drive gated and there are great walks from the cottage itself. It is only a 20 minute drive to Killarney and 10 minutes to the blue flag beach of Inch.

What makes this cottage unique

There are very few of these large traditional Irish farmhouses left in Ireland from the mid nineteenth century and this one has character and charm, in abundance. We have retained all of the characterful features such as slate floors, open fireplace, and original doors and blended them with modern comforts such as central heating, a fully fitted kitchen, a conservatory / sun room and two bathrooms. It is an ideal family holiday retreat where there is ample space to both meet up as a group as well as enjoy the peace and quiet of the surroundings.

Our reviews set out many of the features that our past guests have enjoyed -n so please read them!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for allowing us to stay in this lovely historic cottage. It was a short three night stay but we really enjoyed this homey cottage! Everything was to our liking, including the lovely neighbourly pop, Grace! She was the cutest addition to our stay as she came to visit us twice. We loved the privacy of the location. The soccer field was also great.

Loved our stay at this cottage! It was spacious and clean and had everything we needed! Great location to many sights to see like the Ring of Kerry and Dingle. We traveled with a party of five and was so comfortable. Hosts were very nice and helpful. Would definitely stay again!

Owner's Response: Great to be appreciated! This lovely old cottage is unique, authentic and dating from the 1850's. It retains slate floors, a large open fireplace and beamed ceilings in some rooms giving it a sense of tradition and times gone past. It overlooks a large garden and is ideally located, as Sean & Kelly say, for both Killarney and the National park as well as all that the Dingle Peninsula has to offer as well. We have showered much love and attention on this lovely home over the last 3-4 years, completely re-decorating and refurbishing it and adding many modern comforts. Before that, it was my wife's family home and a great venue for family parties and memories. A happy, happy place indeed!

Owner's Response: Thank you , Wyn. Yes, Wild Cherry Cottage seems to be the place where large families can really chill out in privacy and get a sense of the 'real Kerry'. This cottage dates from the mid 19th century and is perfect for those long evenings by the fire as well as being located on the Wild Atlantic Way, near enough to both Dingle and Killarney.

Owner's Response: Oh, Thanks so much for your kind comments. The value of guest information is different to different people but we rather like to err on the side of too much, rather than too little as guests don't have to read it, after all! Our 20 years of experience of bringing up a large family in this beautiful part of the world means that we know all the short cuts, good value leisure options and the best places to go that the tourist books & maps don't necessarily tell you.I think the majority of our guests, such as Donald here, appreciate this fact, thankfully. Come and find out for yourselves! We still have a couple of summer 2018 weeks unfilled as yet. Nick & Anne

Wild Cherry Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property, extremely well run and maintained by the owners. It is positioned with the mountain at it's back and easy access to the road down to Inch and Dingle.Tralee is a good Traditional Irish Town with a bit of everything, while Killarney has more tourist attractions. But the main attractions are beach and scenery which do stop you in your tracks. The local Kerry people were very welcoming. We all loved it,across a range of ages including a toddler of two.Very safe for children.Great choice and we all hope to go again next year

Perfect holidays in Castlemaine

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Wild cherry cottage with two children (13 and 9 years old ) for 9 days. My daughter loved the room with the huge bed from Sri Lanka.

The cottage was very cosy and lovely decorated.

I loved the big kitchen and the beds were so comfortable and cosy. It was quiet, only the cows in the neighbourhood and the singing birds around could have been heard. The fireplace was so nice.

The cottage was well located to go to Dingle town and the Peninsula. It was also easy to drive to Killarney and the Iveragh Peninsula(near Portmagee there are the Cliffs of Kerry -worth to visit ).

We also went to the Cliffs of Moher (a 3 hours drive, but also beautiful ).

For food and drinks we went to Castlemaine,Bensons or if we needed more to the Lidl in Dingle or the Aldi in Killorglin. We loved Clogher strand and Coumenoole beach. The weather was very good so we were lucky.

Nick was a very good host, very friendly and always helpful!!!Also Annie was very friendly.

We enjoyed our stay so much and can recommend Wild cherry cottage and the Dingle Peninsula without constraint.

Great place!!!

Owner's Response: An old Irish cottage or farmhouse is not for everyone but we seem to be able to attract many guests who really love the authenticity of the cottage, its large private and peaceful garden and its location near Killarney and Dingle. We have also lavished a large amount of love, care, time and money on bringing it back to the 21st century and most guests would say that the decor and facilities are as good as any cottages here on the Peninsula. Please come and share!

Wild Cherry Cottage is located in its own fully enclosed garden & grounds, in a quiet rural area and yet just 2kms from Castlemaine with its shops, pubs, small leisure centre and petrol stations. It nestles at the foot of the Slieve Mish mountains and there are views of Carrantoul (Ireland's highest mountain) from the garden.

It is ideally located to access the many beaches, leisure opportunities and tourist attractions of the Dingle Peninsula as well as the scenic beauty of Killarney, the lakes. and the 'Ring of Kerry' and Kerry Way. The county town of Tralee provides an opportunity for good shopping and boasts the Aquadome, a large indoor play centre, and the Kerry County Museum for those rainy days. For those interested in history and archaeology, the Dingle peninsular provides many neolithic sites and places of interest. The Dingle Way , a 120 mile way marked route, passes just a few miles from the cottage and you can walk the Slieve Mish mountains from the cottage front door! The charm, small craft shops, and great atmosphere of Dingle Town is a must to experience, as is the Slea Head Drive and the Blasket Islands. Castlegregory and the Maharees are also just a few miles away
