Our house is a two-storey modern family home, built for Icelandic poet Guðmunder Danielsson in the 60s. Situated in the oldest and coolest part of town, we are surrounded by trees and just a stone's throw from the magnificent Ölfusá river. We are also just minutes away from the town centre which is buzzing with cafes, stores and all the local amenities, including the newly refurbished swimming pool which includes a sauna, steam room, multiple indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs and cold tubs.
Guest accommodation is situated on the ground floor of this two-story house. The family live upstairs.
A restful, good-sized room with a wood-framed double bed (140cm x 200 cm) with a luxuriously deep memory foam mattress, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe and chest of drawers.
While you are in Iceland, why not treat yourself to some tasty Icelandic specialities (I highly recommend the local organic, mountain-reared, grass-fed lamb) and bring them back to the kitchen in which you have everything you need to prepare a light snack or a three-course meal, i.e. fridge, microwave oven, two-ring electric hob, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, French Press and waffle maker. In the summer, you are welcome to use our BBQ upon which you can grill your steaks the Icelandic way with minimum fuss and maximum taste. Ask me about the secret spice mix that all Icelanders use on their grilled meat!
To get your day off to a great start, we offer a light breakfast of Icelandic-style waffles with chocolate sauce to enjoy alongside good filter coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cordials. I make the waffle dough up the night before and leave it in the fridge in the guest kitchen for you to cook when you are ready.
In return, we ask only that you wash, dry and put away your dishes and leave the area clean and tidy.
Shared shower room
Guests share a compact and well stocked walk-in shower room that boasts a monsoon shower. We have all those little extras you need while on holiday, i.e. shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, body lotion, hand cream, a hairdryer, disposable toothbrushes, disposable razors and international travel plug adapters and more.
It is advisable to bring comfortable eye masks for sleeping from May through until September, as the sun only briefly dips below the horizon.
Selfoss is a small town in Southern Iceland on the banks of the Ölfusá river. It is the perfect base from which to explore all that Southern Iceland has to offer, i.e. Gullfoss and Geysir, lava caves, museums, river walks, geothermal parks, hiking trails, natural hot springs and so much more. And, when you come home, exhausted after a day of sightseeing, you can chill out in the local swimming pool, which is open all year round and boasts indoor and outdoor geothermally heated pools, hot pots, cold pots, a steam room and a sauna. We are just minutes away from the local cafes/restaurants and from one of the loveliest glacial-fed rivers in Iceland.
If you come during the winter months, it is the perfect place for catching a view of the northern lights. Don't forget to download your northern lights app before you arrive, so that you can be continuously updated on potential sightings!
