Wonderful week in a Beautiful home!!

  • 5 of 5

What an absolutely wonderful week for my family. The house is beautiful amd was perfect for us. My husband, son and nephew spent every day fishing and crabbing off the dock while us girls relaxed around the pool. Visited a few local restaurants (at the suggestion of the owners) and both were fabulous! We hope to visit again and continue to create more memories for our children!! Thank you Marianne and Scott!!

Beautiful Historic Home with wondeful setting on inlet to Chesapeake Bay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent the long Memorial Day weekend at Belmont by the Bay as part of a family gathering. The home dates from 1837 and was tastefully furnished with period pieces which transported us back in time. All the bedrooms were so comfortable and spacious there was no arguing over who got which bedroom! When you approach Belmont by the long entry drive through open fields and the 1837 façade draws near you sense you are in for a special experience. Looking out the back of the home over the large, crystal clear swimming pool to the dock and waterfront beyond only confirms that first impression. I enjoyed an early morning swim in the refreshing pool with the Chesapeake inlet at one end and the historic home at the was wonderful! We enjoyed visiting and eating in the charming villages of Matthews and Gloucester which were only short drives away. And, Yorktown made an interesting half day outing from Belmont since the drive was quite short. We could not have been more pleased with the proximity to historic sites, the spectacular location on the Chesapeake waterways, and the comfort of the beautiful home. We would highly recommend it to others seeking a special retreat.

Wonderful home for a family reunion or group vacation

  • 5 of 5

Loved it! My family recently had a delightful stay at Belmont by the Bay. The home is an historic captain and ship builder's house with a bedroom and 2 bathrooms downstairs and a bathroom and 3 plus bedrooms upstairs. The house is on the waterway with a private dock, fire pit and sparkling salt-water pool. We saw abundant wildlife including wild turkeys and a peacock during the drive in and a rabbit, squirrels and various water birds on the property. The surrounding area is perfect for exploring with beautiful homes, multiple waterways and history at every turn. We visited Williamsburg and Jamestowne, both of which are a short drive away. The small town of Mathews is only a few miles away and has many restaurants, curiosity/antique shops, a library and a grocery store. The house has a large well-appointed kitchen and several large seating areas inside but we spent much of our time sitting in the expansive screened in porch watching the sunsets, the wildlife and our kids catch crabs off the dock. The gracious owners could not have been more helpful and responsive to our questions and requests. We hated to leave and will definitely return.

A great family gathering place

  • 5 of 5

I could not say more about our stay at Belmont at the Bay for my son's graduation ceremony from William and Mary Law school. We were all able to stay together in this historic house to gather and cook family meals in a very large and well appointed kitchen and dining area. Comfortable beds, roomy bedrooms, and two large living rooms added to our stay. The peaceful grounds , including two screen porch areas and pool gave us plenty of room to roam and enjoy our river front location. It was nice to sit on the dock to gather and enjoy this beautiful tidewater retreat!

Quiet, Lovingly Restored Get-away from it all

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Belmont although finding it initially was an experience. I suggest you arrive during the day! It is definitely a hidden gem. Behind the farm and between two other homes - but they aren't too close for comfort - is the wonderful, authentic, comfortable estate. The setting is wonderful with direct access to the river, a great dock for fishing/crabbing/kayak launching, and, I assume, tying up a boat, but we didn't have one. The pool was GREAT! Salt water so you can stay in for hours without dealing with the issues of chlorine, big and deep, well maintained. We used it every day. We also loved the screened in porch. So nice to have a place to sit, read, relax and watch the beautiful view of the water, sky, birds, flowers, etc. The home itself is vey comfortable with a nice mix of some areas that have been restored with historical pieces and the "lived-in" spaces that have more modern and comfortable furnishings. The sitting room and dining room were great for more formal times, or to get away and quietly read. The living room had great seating and a nice TV if you need it. The main floor suite was convenient, but be aware that there are some small steps to navigate making it not perfect for anyone with mobility issues. My 70+ year old mother stayed there with no problem but I thought I would mention it. The room itself is very large and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was quite small (as expected in an old home) but functional. The upstairs has 3 1/2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom - again it is very small. The bedrooms on either end of the house are big, but the both have sloped roofs so watch your heads - especially when entering those vey low doorways! There is one bedroom in the middle of the house with what I'm calling a half bedroom attached. The half bedroom also has a door to the bathroom. It's quite small - fits a twin bed and a dresser, no closet that I remember, but it is cozy for a child - as long as they can sleep through others using the bathroom right beside them. Overall we were not a fan of the sleeping arrangements upstairs, but everything else more than made up for it! The kitchen is clean and well equipped with lots of counter space for cooking and eating. The home is remote. It is at least 15 minutes to any restaurant, and honestly there aren't too many to choose from in the area. If what you are looking for is a quiet, comfortable place to enjoy being with your family and/or friends this is it!
