About Mark and Kathy Moore

Mark and Kathy Moore are both retired public school teachers from Greensboro, NC. They purchased this home in 2011 as a remote get-away.

Mark is a Greensboro native and Kathy hails from Elkin, NC. Both love the foothills and mountains of NC which led them to purchase this home and property.

Both are avid outdoor enthusiasts.

They have 4 grown children, 7 grandchildren, and 2 dogs.

Why Mark and Kathy Moore chose North Carolina

This home and property sits on 75 acres of beautiful farm land adjacent to the Dan River in Mt. Airy, NC. You're free to roam the whole 75 acres of fields, woodlands, river, and river bank trails.

This property gives outdoor enthusiasts many unique opportunities. Mark enjoys fly-fishing for trout, kayaking, mountain biking, and target shooting, all of which are just a few steps out the back door.

Kathy is a nature lover and enjoys hiking along the mile long river frontage. She also enjoys kayaking and she and her husband, Mark, simply launch their kayaks from their property and take a 2 and 1/2 hour paddle down to Jessup's Mill where they take out. Jessup's MIll is only an 8 minute drive from the property. Or, they drive down to the Dan River Company at Hanging Rock (20 minutes) and use their shuttle services.

Being only 20 minutes from Mt. Airy, it is a short drive to nice restaurants and shops.

As an avid mountain biker, Mark especially enjoys the close proximity of Moore's Springs Mountain Biking Trails. These trails are for intermediate to advanced riders only.

What makes this house unique

Besides the activities of fishing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, biking, and tubing at the property, the one thing Mark and Kathy love the most about the house and property is the remoteness. After a day of biking, fishing, or kayaking, their favorite past-time is spending an evening by the fire pit on the bank of the river with a glass of wine while listening to the rapids.

Another benefit of the property is the opportunity it gives their 7 grandchildren to experience the outdoors. While the house does offer internet service with WiFi, Mark and Kathy discourage their grandchildren from using electronics unless it's raining.

Great time was had by all!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the property and the home. We have stayed in many places and this was tops! We have stayed in many places and this was tops! The mornings were perfect sitting on the deck overlooking the property and the Dan River. The kids loved the tubing it was family friendly and there was enough tubes for all 10 of us! The gator was fun to explore with. The kids loved the downstairs game room. We loved that the house was lived in and it was comfortable having the young ones around. We didn't have to worry about them messing with things. If you have real little ones baby gates would be needed as there is lots of stairs. The owner might have them in the house somewhere. There was lost of sheets and towels. If you like photography there was lots of areas to explore and take pictures. The days were a bit hot on the deck but it was cooler and nice down by the water under the trees. At night the deck would cool off a bit. The house A/C worked well and was enjoyed by all as it was hot, a heat wave came through when we were there. We walked a lot of the shaded trails along the river. It was very peaceful. The internet was very limited and cell phones barely worked and some not at all, but we really needed to disconnect so it was perfect. The cable worked well. There were no fish when we went, but that was to be expected as it was the end of the season. We loved exploring "Mayberry" nearby. We did the squad car tour too! The food in Mayberry Mt. Airy was awesome. The nearby hiking was amazing. I hate to bring up negative issues, but the house was a bit buggy. There were spiders and bugs but that is expected in the mountain. The quest bedroom bed was broken, but no one probably brought it to the owners attention. My Father-In-Law is handy so he just fixed it as we didn't feel the need to bother the owner. The owner was very friendly and we met him on the day of check in. I am sure he would have had the bed fixed, we just didn't feel the need and handled it ourselves. The top oven needs a good cleaning. We used it and smoked the house out! LOL. I think the cleaning company forgot to clean it. There was 10 of use ages 4-seniors and we all had a great time and felt we had plenty of room to spread out! I would highly recommend this place for a large group. Thanks for a great time!!!! We stayed a full week. We would have loved to stay longer but work calls.

Owner's Response: Melissa, Thanks so much for your review! We appreciate your honesty and are looking into the items you mentioned that need our attention. You are right about the oven. The oven does need cleaning, and that's being addressed. We are also having the basement sprayed for bugs. We're glad this wasn't a huge issue for you and your guests. As for the bed, we are adding an extra wooden slat under the box springs. We are very glad that your overall experience was positive and that you felt it was worth a 5 star rating. We sincerely hope you will visit us again. Keep in mind that you will receive a "repeat renter's discount" if you return. Again, thanks for your suggestions on how we can improve our property for future guests! Mark Moore

Listing Title Says It All!

Absolutely phenomenal property, beautiful and spacious house, TONS of fun things to do, I HIGHLY recommend visiting here! The breathtaking view from the back deck overlooks a huge, peaceful field bordered by the Dan River. There are multiple great spots to put in a kayak or canoe and start your adventure on a fun river with occasional small rapids and stocked with lots of fish. The property has a fire pit and seemingly unlimited supply of firewood right next to the river, ton's of in-house activities including ping-pong, darts, movies, air hockey, etc. There's something for everyone. The hosts were very friendly and helpful with all of our group's questions and requests. If you're looking for an awesome nature getaway, look no further!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Jason. I think your group was the first group to take advantage of the numerous kayaking trips available at and around our property. There are at least 3 different kayaking trips available to those interested. I think you and your friends did them all and more! I hope you visit again soon! It was nice meeting you guys.

We rent 2-3 cabins every year in the blue ridge, smokies and surrounding areas. We have done this 15 years now and this place has moved to the top of our list! From the river to the house to the amenities on site, it was perfect! The owners (mark and Cathy) were so hospitable. I cannot even say what our favorite thing was, but I know the gator was one of them. The kids and my husband went tubing (in probably negative degree water😳) and they loved it. The property is so gorgeous with the layout, the old buildings and the river. We will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your great review Jennifer! We're really glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay at our home. I still can't believe you went tubing! I think that qualifies as a "Polar Plunge". I enjoyed meeting you and your family. It seemed that you were all having a good time. We hope you'll venture back our way soon! Thanks for leaving the house spotless! -Mark

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I came down from Wisconsin and “camped out” here for 2 months, January 10 – March 10, in order to be closer to her elderly parents and to get a taste of living out in the country. (To our chagrin, Wisconsin had a mild winter, while we experienced being snowed in for a few days here. Yes, we are to blame for the weather we brought you.)

In addition to frequent trips to spend time with my wife’s Ancient Ones (both 95 yrs old, hence the honorific), we spent our time working on individual projects we brought along, and very much appreciated the internet access. We hiked at nearby Hanging Rock and Stone Mountain a few times, both of which were nice because no insects this time of year and you could see the landscape through the trees (no foliage). We also hiked around the acreage here several times, frequently scaring up a herd of 8-9 deer which seem to enjoy getting around the property.

We greatly enjoyed the stars at night with no city lights, and when the daytime temps got up to around 50 degrees, the back deck (faces SE) was sunny and actually quite warm and a great place to hang out with a glass of wine…or two. (Or a cigar and a bottle of Makers Mark.)

The kitchen is equipped with pretty much everything you might wish to have. We brought our stovetop Italian expresso unit (that’s how we roll in the mornings), but there’s a Keurig and a drip unit for your caffeine delivery needs (bring your preferred caffeine). As of this writing, there are plenty of filters for the drip unit. I can’t think of anything else you might need to bring here besides food and clothes.

While we aren’t as exciting as a family with children, and therefore can’t really comment on that aspect or make a recommendation, we found it a very hospitable place to spend a couple months. I only thought of The Shining a couple of times…..(just kidding, dear!)

Finally, Mark and Kathy are wonderful…landlords? Hosts? Whatever the label, they are very welcoming and excellent people. We highly recommend this place for a country getaway!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review Scott! You and Linda are the first "long term" guests we've had. Spending two months there in the winter must have been a bit of an adventure, what with the weather we've had this year. I wish you two could have stayed there in the spring, summer, or fall so you could have enjoyed being outside more. Kathy and I enjoyed spending time with the two of you! We hope you will make your way back to NC soon! -Mark

Perfect Family Get-Away!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 needed an after Christmas weekend get-away and this was the perfect place! The weather was even nice enough for us to go tubing. Everything we needed was provided. I think this place is perfect for any season. Mark and Kathy were very accommodating and always quick to respond. I highly recommend staying here!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Wendy. We are certainly glad you enjoyed your stay at our home. I still find it amazing that some of your party went tubing in December! That water is cold in even in the summer! We hope you'll come back soon to try tubing when it's warm! Mark

Unique and incredible atmosphere

  • 5 of 5

The owners of this property have literally thought of everything to make the vacation very practical, relaxing, and fun. The house has plenty of room and it is has updated interior and appliances. You don't need to bring much except for clothes and food. The owners will give you a list of things that are included or available on the property.

It was the best weekend for our family and we needed this escape to spend focused time on each other. We stayed unplugged from electronics because there was plenty of things on the property to keep us occupied. Wading/tubing in the river, horseshoes, firing range, watching deer, time on the back deck, fishing, BB guns with kids, and John Deere Gator exploring all of the land took up our weekend and all adults and kids participated. There is something to do for every person. This location is a quick getaway for anyone in the Piedmont Triad. I highly recommend this getaway for anyone who needs to be recharged and refreshed.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Brian! Since listing our home on and, we were concerned about our not being able to offer internet services. We've been pleasantly surprised by how many guests have said this was a plus! We're glad you enjoyed all that our house and property have to offer. We hope to see you again soon! Mark and Kathy
