This is a one-of-a-kind, energy-efficient, simple yet luxurious home that offers a solitary and comfortable experience in a beautiful setting, the Shenandoah Mountains. Featured in the book THE FAMILY CABIN by Dale Mulfinger.
The house has a great room, two conventional bedrooms (master with king bed and kids' room with bunk beds and crib), a den that converts to a semi-private bedroom (queen or two twins), two bathrooms (one with a soaking tub and one with double shower), and a gourmet kitchen.
The house is filled with books, games, toys, movies, a Steinway piano—everything you'd want for a fun and relaxing getaway. We designed it with a toddler in mind, and it's very safe for kids. There's a secret playhouse with a play kitchen and art supplies. We've got air conditioning, a laundry room, and speedy internet.
**THERE ARE NO SHADES ON THE WINDOWS** We provide eye masks. Privacy is not an issue, and it's pitch black at night. But if you have a baby who needs total darkness to nap, this isn't the house for you.
Outside on our four acres there's a pool (open Memorial Day to Labor Day), large deck and screen porch, grill, fire pit (s'mores!), archery equipment, lawn games, sand table, wild berries, occasional deer sightings, and invigorating walks (if you don't mind hills).
The rolling green hills make the Shenandoah Valley one of the most beautiful areas in the mid-Atlantic. Five minutes away is a farm market with playground, BBQ, bakery, and ice cream; 15 minutes away is Strasburg, with antique stores and casual restaurants; 30 minutes away are Winchester, Front Royal, and the famous Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. In the summer there's semi-pro baseball, drive-in movies, and river activities a short drive away. In the fall, the leaves are amazing, and the pick-your-own farms and markets are great fun. Spring is a great time to hike (including on the Appalachian Trail nearby), shop for antiques, and visit Civil War historical sites and caverns. Wineries have sprouted up all around.
We are 90 minutes from D.C. and 2 hours from Baltimore. Nearest major airports are Dulles (75 miles), Reagan National (90 miles), and BWI (125 miles). The house has an uphill gravel driveway that is accessible with any vehicle, but you may prefer four-wheel drive.
When you head home, you will need to toss your trash at the dump, an easy stop right on the way to the highway.
Guests will have to sign a standard rental agreement. Check-in time is 4 p.m. and check-out time is 12 p.m., but there may be some flexibility—just ask ahead of time.
**SIX-GUEST LIMIT AND NO PETS: NO EXCEPTIONS. INFANTS COUNT**
The $60 pool cleaning fee will be refunded upon booking for guests who book outside of pool season.

Why Linda Perlstein chose Strasburg
Linda bought the house in 2003 as a weekend getaway from D.C. At the time it was a simple timber cabin. In 2009 construction was completed on the new house.

Perfect Escape From DC
My family of four (two adults and two kids, ages 3 and 6) just spent a fantastic couple of nights at this house! It is in a beautiful setting, an easy hour and fifteen minute drive from DC. The house is immaculate and stocked with everything you would need. Our kids loved all of the toys, books, and art supplies so much that we barely left the house! We look forward to returning in the summer when the pool is open!
Beautiful Mountain Retreat
This house is AWESOME! There are not many contemporary style rental homes in the area and this one certainly stands out. Our party of 6 spent a long weekend away from the city and enjoyed the serenity and beauty of the nearby countryside. Photos on the website do not do justice to the actual wide open feeling inside the main living areas of this home. It is truly spectacular...as well as spotless. The house comes extremely well-equipped, both for kitchen and outdoor adventures. The evening brought us around the fire pit listening to nature's symphony and taking advantage of the provided ingredients to heat up s'mores. The kids also enjoyed the "secret" additional playroom underneath the house. Linda was extremely easy to work with and I would be remiss if I didn't send a special shout out to her property manager, Kaye. She helped us out of a rut, literally, when this reviewer took a bad turn backing down the steep driveway...rookie mistake. But don't let that deter you. You will love this unique house and the surrounding areas.
Home away from home!
Fabulous house! We will definitely return. Kate & Linda were so easy and accommodating. The house is beyond perfect! My boys loved the walk up and down the mountain with little stops along the way to play in the stream. The archery/ring toss extravaganza was the icing on the cake! Loved every minute of our long weekend at your "mountainside gem". Thank you.
Quiet getaway, perfect for family time!
Property was better than the pictures and the owners took every opportunity to make you feel welcome at home including supplying all the fixings for Smores. We were never bored with the pool, archery and other games. All we really packed were clothes. There are plenty of stores nearby and a great little country store with all the necessary stuff to get you started. We visited Winchester, very cute little town hall. We also visited Luray Caverns and Skyline Drive. Next year we want to spend a week. We have rented many VRBO places and this is our first in VA. This is the 1st place that had it all and more. We couldn't have asked for a better trip. The house is clean and super comfortable. Their not kidding about the driveway but we did fine in our SUV. Oh and if you like Reuben sandwiches checkout Nanas Irish pub! Thanks again Linda!
We love the scotch eggs at Nana's! So glad you enjoyed your visit.
what a lovely house!
The mountain views are spectacular. The screened in porch is simply enormous, and you can watch the sunrise in one direction and the sunset in the other. The kids loved the archery range and the swings. The furnishings and such are well-chosen and well-cared for. I got the urge to make pancakes and all the nonperishables, including a cookbook, were available. Every tool one could want was available in the enormous kitchen, and the counter/sink faces the mountain view, though if you're picky about these things you could bring a spare frying pan (the cast iron pan is great but the other is less so) and a sharp knife or two.
Strasburg is a little further from the Skyline Drive than we might have found ideal, but I don't think we could find such a nice house nearer by even if I had started looking sooner. Besides, the drives are beautiful. The only thing that is honestly imperfect is that the driveway is long and steep, which is a little scary. Just keep gassing it all the way up--it's certainly worth it.
We did arrive to find that the internet was out, but Linda was incredibly solicitous and gave us some money back, which was very fair. And having more trouble being connected to the office than usual wasn't all bad, either.
Great Modern Get Away in the Mountains! (Kid Approved!)
My husband and I decided to book a mountain getaway for Thanksgiving for ourselves and our 2 young children (8 and 4). This home exceeded our expectations! It was just as described by the home owners and even more beautiful in person. The homeowners left detailed instructions to assist with anything we needed in the home and the neighbor who helps manage the property was very responsive and helpful as well! Our kids LOVED swinging on the swings that made them feel like they were "swinging over the mountain" and especially loved their "secret playroom." We ALL enjoyed playing archery and hanging by the fire pit! We were even surprised to have some classic family movies there to watch as well as fun family Wii games to play. We did not leave the house for the 2 nights we were there and the kids weren't bored at all...in fact, they didn't want to leave. I brought food to cook for Thanksgiving and was so excited to cook in this kitchen! The kitchen had everything I needed there and more! Ultimately, we would definitely recommend this home especially for those with kids!
