This is a one-of-a-kind, architect-designed, energy-efficient, simple yet luxurious home that offers a solitary and comfortable experience in a beautiful setting, the Shenandoah Mountains.
The house has a great room, two conventional bedrooms (master with en suite bath and kids' room with bunk beds and crib), a den that converts to a semi-private bedroom (queen or two twins), two luxury bathrooms (one with a soaking tub and one with double shower), a gourmet kitchen, and a secret playroom.
The house is filled with books, games, toys, movies, a Steinway piano—everything you'd want for a fun and relaxing getaway. We designed it with our then-baby in mind and it's very safe for kids. There's a secret playhouse with a play kitchen and art supplies. All your needs are taken care of: We've got air conditioning, a laundry room, and speedy internet.
Outside on our four acres there's a pool (open May through September), large deck, comfy screen porch, grill, fire pit (s'mores!), archery equipment, slack line, sand table, delicious wild berries, occasional wildlife sightings, and invigorating walks (if you don't mind hills).
The rolling green hills make the Shenandoah Valley one of the most beautiful areas in the mid-Atlantic. Five minutes away is a farm market with playground, BBQ, bakery, and ice cream; 15 minutes away is Strasburg, with antique stores and casual restaurants; 30 minutes away are Winchester, Front Royal, and the famous Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. In the summer there's semi-pro baseball, drive-in movies, and river activities a short drive away. In the fall, the leaves are amazing, and the pick-your-own farms and markets are great fun. Spring is a great time to hike (including on the Appalachian Trail nearby), shop for antiques, and visit Civil War historical sites and caverns. Wineries have sprouted up all around.
We are 90 minutes from D.C. and 2 hours from Baltimore. Nearest major airports are Dulles (75 miles), Reagan National (90 miles), and BWI (125 miles). The house has an uphill gravel driveway that is accessible with any vehicle, but you may prefer four-wheel drive.
Guests will have to sign a standard rental agreement. Check-in time is 4 p.m. and check-out time is 12 p.m., but there may be some flexibility—just ask ahead of time.
The $60 pool cleaning fee will be refunded upon booking for guests who will not be using the pool. Typically, pool season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day (longer if weather permits).
We are serious about the 6-person maximum for overnight stays—please respect it. Our caretaker lives next door and will know if you are bringing in extra guests.
We are a professional couple with young son who lived in Washington, D.C., for a long time before moving to Seattle.
Linda Perlstein purchased this house in 2003
Linda bought the house in 2003 as a weekend getaway from D.C. At the time it was a simple timber cabin. In 2009 construction was completed on the new house.
My husband and I decided to book a mountain getaway for Thanksgiving for ourselves and our 2 young children (8 and 4). This home exceeded our expectations! It was just as described by the home owners and even more beautiful in person. The homeowners left detailed instructions to assist with anything we needed in the home and the neighbor who helps manage the property was very responsive and helpful as well! Our kids LOVED swinging on the swings that made them feel like they were "swinging over the mountain" and especially loved their "secret playroom." We ALL enjoyed playing archery and hanging by the fire pit! We were even surprised to have some classic family movies there to watch as well as fun family Wii games to play. We did not leave the house for the 2 nights we were there and the kids weren't bored at all...in fact, they didn't want to leave. I brought food to cook for Thanksgiving and was so excited to cook in this kitchen! The kitchen had everything I needed there and more! Ultimately, we would definitely recommend this home especially for those with kids!
Love love love this house! This house is beautiful and just my taste. We stayed in all three days...just wanted to enjoy the house itself. THank you so much for sharing your home. The house manager was nice. We hope to be back.
This place was awesome. Layout, amenities... everything written here are all true. The whole family had so much fun staying here. Kids enjoyed the pool all day and loved the s'mores at night time. Pantry is more complete than going to a timeshare unit. Mom and Dad had the peace and quiet we were looking for as well as family bonding time before school starts. From books, game boards to DVDs...so many things to do. The cute art room downstairs kept the kids busy. We will definitely go back to this place soon. Kate has been very helpful during our stay here. Will definitely recommend to family and friends. :)
Pictures don't do this place justice! We just got back from our stay at this lovely mountainside home. We spent our days exploring caverns, hiking, visiting local attractions...but we could have easily just stayed home and enjoyed the many amenities offered! I woke up extra early every morning just to see the gorgeous sunrise through the trees. The kitchen is amazing and had everything we needed and more. The bathrooms are spa-like and the beds are out of this world comfortable! My husband and I could have stayed in all day and watched movies (they have some of our old favorites!). The wii kept my 8 year old busy while we enjoyed wine and cheese on the lovely and huge screened in porch. I cannot say enough great things about this place. We will absolutely be back!
Spacious, well equipped home. Light and airy, considering there are trees all around you. Comfy beds and lovely shower. Nice bedding and towels. Enjoyed having a bbq and dip in the pool after a hike ( Big Schloss). Very nice house manager met and gave us the keys. My children didn't like not having curtains in their bedroom.
This home is thoughtfully designed and unusually well-stocked, clean, and sanitary for a vacation rental. Perfect combination of luxurious, practical, and funky. It has views pretty enough to want to stay and sit on the porch all day, but its location put us halfway between the city and all the great Shenandoah valley attractions (skyline drive, luray caverns). I am so happy the owners decided to share the place with others.
It's a lot of house for just two people, but if you like the space then I think their rates are competitive with others specifically for couples. It would be perfect for a family with two kids and a teenager.
Only drawbacks for city slickers not totally accustomed to country living:
You have to take your own trash to the dump and there are no curtains or any other cover on the Windows in the bedrooms and master bath which can make you feel a little exposed. But neither of those were major issues and we had a wonderful time.
One tip: the grill is charcoal and you might want to bring some along.
