Kea is one one the closest islands to Athens. The island has retained its natural charm and is one of the hidden gems of the Cycladic islands. As the island has few hotels, private villas are offered for rent. Most of these houses are made of local stone and are unique in their architecture. The picturesque Marina of Vourkari, well known to the yachting crown is 15 minutes from the house and offers some very good fish restaurants, cafes, bars and a couple of boutiques.

The house is 120 sq meters on a 1,000s meters plot of land near Chora (Ioulitha). Outside there is a swimming pool and terrace from where one has a breathtaking view of the surrounding area and the sea. Near the swimming pool there is a shaded dining/seating area with a BBQ. The ground floor of the house has a living room with fireplace and large windows that again give one a fantastic sea view. Near dining area there is a fully equipped kitchen and a w.c. Near the kitchen there are stairs leading to an open-plan area that overlooks the living room, which can be used as the third bedroom. Lovely, well situated house full of character

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter and I stayed here mid to late August and we had a great time. We were met by the welcoming, efficient and knowledgable Maria Lemos who drove us to the house, kindly helping with a stop en-route at the supermarket for supplies as we had arrived late evening.

The house is set above and behind Ioulida with an unrivalled view back across the Aegean to the mainland peninsula. The sun sets here so prepare so spend a lot of time photographing the sunsets - you can literally watch it sink behind the distant mountains. I'd advise a car but there's a fine restaurant, supermarket and bakery a short(ish) walk away all near Kea Villas. Also, there's a reliable if slightly infrequent bus service in summer. ( Taxi's are also affordable to the main towns but if you want to go to Karthea for example you'll pay 25 Euros each way.

The house itself is cosy and comfortable with a small but impressively equipped kitchen (Dishwasher, two coffee machines, juicer, fridge freezer etc - but no microwave). Living area is fine with table and chairs and sofa but we ate outside every day where you have the choice of two terraces and tables, one more protected from the sometimes gusty wind. There's a very attractive mezzanine level inside where our daughter loved to play and read. Downstairs there are two bedrooms and two bathrooms (on en-suite) with a utility room and washing machine. The pool is brilliant with a great view again and room for sun loungers.

Nowhere is prohibitively far on Kea so you can get to wherever you need to go quickly and enjoy the wonderful sights, tastes and people of this beautiful island. Heartily recommended.

Kea was once called the Water Island, Ydroussa, and it is believed that the name is connected to the water nymph that lived in Kea

according to mythology. Being such a pretty island the gods got jealous and sent a lion to ravage the land. The nymphs fled and as a consequence the island dried out. The Keans then asked Apollo's son Aristaeus for help and he built a temple to Zeus, who apart from being the highest god, also was the one who sent rain. This pleased him and the nymphs and waters returned, giving Kea a fertile soil with good crops.

The island has been inhabited since Neolithic times. In the 13th century, the island was ruled by the Venetians and 300 years later by the Turks. Meanwhile, Kea was often raided by pirates and the locals suffered greatly. It is therefore not surprising that Kea was one of the first Greek islands to enroll in the War of Independence in 1821.

Vourkari: The little harbor of Vourkari is a 10 minute drive from the house and a delightful place popular with the yachting crowd. Although there is no beach in Vourkari itself, the lovely sandy beach of Gialiskari is just round the corner. Vourkari has quite

a busy nightlife and there are several good fish restaurants and a couple of trendy bars. There is also a mini-market, a couple of arts and crafts shops and some boutiques.

Otzias Bay is only a 15 minute drive from the house (there is a local bus service) . The Bay of Otzia has a long sandy beach with a lagoon section that makes it ideal swimming for families with small children. The organized beaches of Spathi and Koundouraki, are ideal for those that like water sports. There is also a scuba diving school with experienced divers that can take you around the island to see some of the ship wrecks.

Ioulis: The capital of the island, also known as Chora is a 2 minute drive from the house. No cars are allowed in Ioulis, as it is protected site. Ioulis has narrow cobbled roads filled with small shop, cafes, restaurants, bakeries etc.,

Unlike other Islands, Kea remains a quaint, low profile, rugged island, with few tourists and an abundance of pristine beaches, beautiful blue-green

waters and ancient cobblestone marked foot-paths, bird-watching nature reserves, few hotels and mostly privately owned houses.

Seasonally or permanently, to relax and enjoy, Kea boasts known names of the Greek and international jet-set in business, law, science, and art,

as it appeals to the discerning visitor who seeks tranquillity, authenticity and a genuinely Aegean environment.
