Overview

About the property

Make this cozy lakefront oak log cabin your very own getaway.

This lake front cabin sits on a secluded 5 acre peninsula, located on Lake Glen Shoals, in Hillsboro, Illinois. Built in 1999, it is made of 8 inch oak logs. It has one bedroom with a queen bed, a sleeping loft with 3 twin beds and an improved walkout basement with an entertainment center and a queen sleeper sofa. There are two full bathrooms and a clothes washer and dryer in the basement. Heat, Central AC & City water. Fully Functioning Kitchen including an electric range w/oven (Although compact, owner Tom Burkart managed to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for 20), refrigerator/freezer with automatic ice maker, microwave, dishes, silverware, pots, pans, cookware, coffeemaker; cappuccino maker & bagel Toaster. (If you bring or buy something to cook, the kitchen should accommodate.)

We have rescue pets of our own, but experience requires that we no longer allow guests to bring pets.

We provide bed linens for the queen and twin beds.

We have four sets of towels, hand towels, and washcloths (2 sets in each bath). We also have other older towels for swimming or other use.

We have a home theater, with full surround sound, DVD player, and a Blueray player. There is DirecTV on the main and lower level. Board games, cards, etc. There are 2 fire pits, one located off the back patio of the cabin and one on the peninsula overlooking the lake. There is an assorted library of books containing John Grisham novels among others.

The lake is 1,250 acres and accommodates all water sports. There are two large designated no-wake areas for sailing and canoeing. There is a boat dock with swimmers ladder, and a large playing field for outdoor sports.

The cabin is less than 45 minutes from the state capital of Springfield, where you can visit the Abraham Lincoln presidential library and museum (plan on a full day). It is about 90 minutes from St. Louis, Missouri which features a free zoo, free history museum, free science center, and a free art museum that has been compared to the Louvre in France. 7 miles to the west is historic US Route 66.

About Tom Burkart

We have always loved log cabins ever since vacationing in Door County Wisconsin. Finding Gastineau Log Homes and Jeff Fore of Sangamon Valley Log Homes to build this oak log home has been a blessing ever since.

Tom Burkart purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Tom Burkart chose Illinois

This is the largest tract on the lake and is located on the main peninsula, two sides of which are the main full recreation part, and the south side of which is the no-wake Irving cove. The property is conveniently located half way between the Illinois capital of Springfield with all the Lincoln sites and the state fair, and St. Louis, Missouri with its zoo, art museum, science center, and history museum, all of which have free admission. Neither major city is too far for a day trip.

What makes this cabin unique

The private bedroom and separate sleeping loft for the kids made this design our favorite. Having the luxury of placing it on a walkout facing the lake, made the choice to finish the basement with an entertainment center a no-brainer. Having a washer and dryer in the cabin is an extra bonus for longer stays. We are always seeing all sorts of wildlife. Deer and wild turkey are plentiful, and in the winter there is at least one couple of bald eagles that make the lake their home. The nearby Bremer Audubon Sanctuary has miles of hiking trails.

I loved this cabin. The place was beautiful, clean, and very inviting. There were lots of games and books to keep everyone happy and entertained. Tom allowed us to bring our dogs which made it possible for us to enjoy a quiet time out in the country. We also had our own boat which we docked on the property. This made it very easy to fish on shore or in the boat. There also was a small beach for those who like to go swimming. Everything was just as pictured. Would I rent this cabin again, you bet. It was just what my husband and I were looking for. Oh by the way, we caught our limit in cat fish each day. We also caught a few stripper bass.

Fantastic get away for our family!!! Highly recommend this place!!!! Owners are wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

This place is perfect!! We have 5 older children (13-23) and between their jobs and school it's very hard to get them together in one place!! We usually go camping for a few days to reconnect and though we would change things up... this was perfect!! There is a private pier at the end of the property. We rented the 4 Kayaks from the owners- highly recommend you do this!! The lake is beautiful! Also brought floats to tie up to the pier. Only thing that would have been better is if we had a boat or jet skis to bring!! And do bring water shoes! The lake is a little murky and you never know what you might step on. Husband lost his footing and fell on a tree stump under the water- ribs are not good, but this did not effect our opinion of how wonderful this place is!! And if you like to fish... this is definitely the place for you!! My boys were in heaven!! The house is perfect!! So nicely kept, with all the amenities!! Not sure we will camp anytime soon after being spoiled here!! And 45 min away there is the Keysport Marina!!!! They rent boats, tubes, jet skis!! The employees are wonderful!! And it's not too $$ considering what your getting!! We went there on 2 different days!! Call them fist. If you like being on the water like we do we highly recommend you doing that on one of your days. And it's a quick ride... with Walmart on the way home!!! Defiantly hoping to rent this again!! This was one of the rare occasions where all my children said they had a great time and wanted to go back!!! Thank you Tom and Karen for sharing a little piece of your Heaven with all of us!!!

Quiet & Secluded!

  • 4 of 5

Wonderfully quiet and secluded location on a sweet lake! Weather wise, it was tad warm and there was a problem with the air conditioning, but the owner was quick to send a repairman to take care of it. The inside was clean and functional, bit we were a bit disappointed that the outside chairs and deck hadn't been cleaned. Without a hose available to rinse things off, we found a bucket and rag and went to work. Realizing that all VRBO's vary as to what is provided, here is a short list of basic things you should bring if you don't want to drive into town to purchase: toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen trash bags, coffee filters, bath soap. We had a good time once we settled in!!

Private, cozy, and fully equipped!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I were looking for a cabin with a lake and beach for our vacation. This was absolutely perfect for what we were looking for! Exceptionally clean and spacious; we had a great time. The kids especially liked the loft and downstairs tv area.

Very clean, peaceful, great place.

  • 4 of 5

This cabin was one of the best Ive stayed at. All the comforts of home. Great location also. Not too far from town but secluded enough for peace and quiet. I was very surprised though that the town of Hillsboro did not have a baitshop on it though. A little disappointing but we made the best of it.

Owner's Response: We are very glad you enjoyed your get away. For future visits, be advised that R & J's Outdoors located at 404 22nd Street in Hillsboro has fishing supplies. The Motomart in Hillsboro sold bait at one time as well. Tom & Karen Burkart
