About the property

Home offers 2 separate 2 bed/1 baths homes attached by interior lockable door

This home has 2 sides to it and each side has its own kitchen, bathroom, dining and living space along with master bedroom (queen) and other bedroom (2 twin beds in each bedroom).... perfect for bonding and entertaining with family and friends but allows for private retreats whenever you wish by an interior lockable door in between the 2 units. The rental price if for both units. We don't rent this house very often as its the house we use ourselves. The private association beach is 1.5 block walk along a sleepy gravel road... stunningly beautiful all seasons of the year. Shower off after a day at the beach in our large, enclosed outdoor shower, and cook on the gas grill after all-day play. Enjoy relaxing in the big, shared backyard enclosed by a fence on all sides and having a fire in our fire pit or gather around in the huge screened in porch or family room to watch DirectTV or watch some of our DVDs we make available on our 48" flat screen plasma TVs. Make use of the 4 bikes (2 adult/2 child) we make available at Mar y Tierra and join in the robust cycling trails all around Harbor Country. We also offer board games, sports equipment and a variety of children's books for your use at the cottage. There is a parking pad/short driveway in front of each side of the duplex to allow for 2 cars.

The "Mar" (sea) side is decorated in a nautical theme and has one master bedroom (queen bed), one bunk room (2 twin beds), a kitchen, full bathroom, living room, and the dining space that is in the screened porch. The dining space on this side is located within the very large screened in porch and seats 4. The screened in porch also houses a lounge space with a couch, a 48" flat screen TV and 2 arm chairs.

The "Tierra" (land) side is decorated with a farm/country theme and has the other 2 bedrooms, one queen bed master and 1 bedroom with 2 side-by-side twin beds. It also has 1 full bath, another kitchen, and offers an indoor dining room that seats up to 8 and a family room housed in a 3 seasons room with a couch, 2 chairs and a flat screened TV, DVD player and music player hook-up.

The neighborhood is incredibly safe for children as the streets are gravel and drivers are scarce and drive very slow. In short, they have plenty of space to run around wild. Lakeside is the sleepier version of New hustle bustle but still walkable/bikeable to small grocery, restaurants, etc.

The beach is less than 1/4 mile walk and it's an association beach, which means that only residents on a few streets have access. Enjoy the 4 beach chairs we make available for your use and experience the gorgeous beaches of Harbor Country, some of the most beautiful we've ever seen (and we've seen a lot beaches!). The water is incredibly kid-friendly and is mostly flat, has a gradual deepening and often times has a sandbar that is within swimming distance. For added fun, rent a paddleboard for the day and have it delivered to and picked up from the beach; or rent or bring a kayak, rent a jet ski from the harbor in New Buffalo, only a 5 minute drive away. Don't forget that the sun sets over Lake Michigan so be sure to spend some time at the beach during sunset hours. It is unforgettable!

Dining options are plentiful... visit the relatively bustling New Buffalo and eat at famous Stray Dog or Redamak's or at other great eats there, or choose to dine even closer in Lakeside/Sawyer/Union Pier. There are microbreweries all over the area, within 5-10 minutes drive, as well as an impressive number of local wineries.

There are many small, gourmet grocery stores that are walkable, but full service grocery stores (Barney's in New Buffalo and Sawyer Garden Market in Sawyer) are within a 5-10 minute drive that offer both staples as well as organic, locally farmed food. There is also a farmer's market that is about 1 mile away (ride one of our bikes there!) that happens on Saturdays and Sundays in the summer and fall months. The produce is at its finest, I highly recommend it.

If you want other options outside of beaching it, we offer a big directory in the house with lots of different options, including a wide array of children's options. Enjoy hiking, biking, walking in the many forest preserves in the area, or go to Cap'n Mikes (a small vintage amusement park), hit golf balls at Whittaker Woods (an excellent course, highly recommended), see a movie or go to a small zoo or hit the outlet mall in Michigan City (20 min drive), go antiquing all over Harbor Country, horseback ride, pick blueberries/strawberries/apples, hit the Children's Museum and Silver Beach in St. Joseph (20 min drive), go to one of the many parks in the area, play tennis, go to Hesston (10 min drive) if you want to ride some old fashioned trains, get ice cream at famous Oinks in New Buffalo, rent a kayak and enjoy the Galien River kayak course, catch a show at the Acorn Theatre or art movies at the Vickers in Three Oaks (15 min drive), enjoy some of the local festivals like Ship and Shore and Art Attack. In the colder months, cozy up with wine and a nice fire in the fireplace at night while during the day you can ski (50 min drive), sled, cross country ski, snowmobile, ice skate all around. There is more to do here... too much to list!

Getting here is easy-- it takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to drive here from Chicago and there is an Amtrak express train that leaves Union Station and goes directly to New Buffalo that runs a couple of times per day. As well, there is a South Shore train line that runs very often during the day that goes from Chicago to Michigan City. If you are flying in, I recommend Midway Airport and it will be about 1 hour 15 minutes drive.

About Erica Carli

We live in Chicago and discovered Harbor Country through a family member, who has a home in New Buffalo. We fell in love with the area as it is a very short drive from Chicago, but makes you feel like you are a world away from the hustle bustle of the city. I swear when we come up here, I breathe differently. The air is so pure from the vast array of trees and greenery, the breeze is filled with bird songs we never get to hear in the city, and the stars are so luminous at night my kids can see constellations (an impossibility in the city!). We know you will love this area of the country as much as we do. We are very detail-oriented when it comes to furnishing a home and have tried to think of everything to make your stay fun, relaxing and enjoyable. We are fair, level-headed and love to hear feedback about how to make your stay even better.

Mar y Tierra Review

I was visiting the New Buffalo, MI area for a wedding and found this great house in Lakeside, MI for myself and seven friends. The property itself is great, effectively two houses combined into one, with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and kitchen on each side. Further, one of the sides has an indoor living space with couch, tv, etc., and the other side has an open air living space which was probably the best part of the house and where we spent the majority of our time. The house is conveniently located <10 minutes by car from the town of New Buffalo and also includes access to a private beach that is walkable and only a few blocks away. I would absolutely return to this house and would highly recommend it for a getaway with friends. In addition to the great property, the owners are responsive and provided a detailed overview of the house / suggested packing items in advance of our trip.
